Nintendo E3 Site Opens: E3 Direct one hour long. Teases some games.

The thing I don't get is that with what is announced to show up at E3, it's already guaranteed to be way better than the last two E3s unless you hate Mario, Mario Kart and Smash.

Maybe lack of surprises but those games are only surprises in what they look like and maybe how they play. Any surprises is a bonus and I have a feeling there will be one or a few.

Yeah, this is pretty much the case. I still don't think we'll see Retro's game, but maybe something new like an Near-Field Communication-based title with Miyamoto revealing it during the likely small and tame press conference. Hopefully, we'll see some more Japanese third party support this year too.

For what it's worth, I wasn't trying to be a Debby downer. I was mostly joking. But I do always set my expectations low with Nintendo, because they're a rubbish, inconsistent presenter (like many other companies). A year ago if you told me they'd totally fuck up an E3 console reveal I wouldn't have really believed you, but Nintendo none-the-less proved me wrong.

And it's not really a matter of under hyping myself, so much as not winding myself like an overexcited five year old on Christmas morning. I don't see the point in working myself up over Retro's game, and surprise third party collaborations, and Zelda Wii U, and a bunch of other things in no way confirmed to appear in this Nintendo Direct when I know I'm going to get them eventually. It would be nice, and they could show up, but I find wish fulfilment fantasies both unsatisfying and boring. I can't lie to myself, and the fact of the matter is I don't need to.

Because what I do know I'm getting is already enough to make me happy. I'm seeing Super Mario U, Smash Bros. U, and Mario Kart U for the very first time. Three games I am 99% likely to buy and enjoy for my Wii U, that 1% leftover for that small probability that each game will be an unexpectedly stinking turd. I'm also very like to see more on Wind Waker HD, a game I'm likely to buy, and Bayonetta 2. Bayonetta 2 being one of my most anticipated games on the horizon, full stop. X might even show up. I loved Xenoblade. So there's three more games to excite me, two of which are entirely new.

With the prospect of learning about five big truly new games for me to enjoy on my Wii U, that's enough to make me happy. That's enough for me to go "Cool, I'm going to learn some great things about the Wii U in a few days!". Anything else, whether it be Retro's new game (which I am extremely excited for despite knowing absolutely nothing about, due to Retro's immaculate track record), or a surprise announcement, is a cherry on top. I'm not going into this expecting these things, because I'm humbled and happy with what I'm already getting.

But I also make a mental note that Nintendo isn't the kind of company to ignore other shit they have in the pipes. A ten minute explanation of Wii Fit U really is not out of the question. And given I couldn't give a single shit about Wii Fit U, I am not looking forward to it showing up and chewing up time that could be spent on my precious Mario, Smash, and Bayonetta.

That doesn't confirm it though. Its just using another website as a source. Have we had any confirmation from Nintendo or Tecmo? This is the post I read that made me doubt it:

For some reason everyone on the internet believes this, even though there's no evidence that it's actually the case. They own part of the rights to Project Zero 4 and the 2 Remake, but that's in all likelihood because they've been the ones funding the titles and not because they've bougt co-ownership of the franchise. There's no evidence that Nintendo owns more than that.

They do own Spirit Camera, though, a 3DS spin-off of the Project Zero series.

I dont think we saw that as a debbie downing EC. Like you said being happy with what is confirmed to be shown could make some content. The debbie downing are the post like, " You guys hyping up are going to be very dissapointed in this 1 hour direct."

I mean are they serious.. Im gonna see a new MK, 3D mario, and smash bros. Smash bros. Fucking smash brothers..??? Oh no you got it twisted we are talking about fucking smash bros. here man! :p

I can't find an official statement either, but since neither Tecmo or Nintendo is refuting it then it must be true

My feelings exactly.

So I dunno if they've officially released the number of games that would have demos available at Best Buys during the E3 special, but now it's confirmed to be 4 according to that site.
I'm guessing that the four games are...
  • Pikmin 3
  • Wonderful 101
  • Wind Waker HD
  • Mario Kart?
What do you all think?
Sounds about right. Having a widely available demo for a newly announced game seems risky also given Nintendo having shown bad demos for big holiday releases before. Probably would want to play it safe.

i find that if i get overexcited and set my expectations high for films, it'll ruin it for me when the time comes. it's always the opposite for me with video games. the more i get excited about them, the more i enjoy them when the time comes. same thing with books. i wish there were more books i could get this excited for.

Didnt Nintendo publish the last one? They werent in the credits for nothing. If they published it they may in fact co own it.

Yeah like the post said they co own that game not the franchise.

I can't find an official statement either, but since neither Tecmo or Nintendo is refuting it then it must be true

Thats not really great logic is it :/ Has anyone even asked the question to either of them?

And as an addition, I also think knowing is half the battle. Especially with Nintendo. I love surprises, but over the many, many years of gaming I've been burned too many times gambling on unknowns with that bloody company. And to be perfectly honest, expecting a surprise is less fun (in my opinion) than actually being surprised. That's what made X and Bayonetta 2 so awesome to me. They were both out of nowhere surprises that I in no way expected.

Simply knowing so many cool games to be shown for the first time this year is in itself comforting. It's not like Nintendo said "Mario Kart will be there" and left it at that. There's a lot if big franchises showing up, none of which have had gameplay shown before. I have plenty of known qualities to look forward to, some of which are the big reasons people buy Nintendo systems in the first place.

It's not like E3 2012 where much of it was an unknown, and people were left to their own devices to speculate what was going to show up. That year people were expecting similar shit to what we know we're getting this, and that's what lead to a lot of disappointment.

a lot of you are acting like a bunch of formerly-abused dogs who are too scared to risk receiving affection from their loving rescuer. if you want to build a bomb shelter, that's your prerogative, but it's either going to be megatons or negatons, and i'm going to stand outside naked, arms outstretched, and absorb the full impact in either case, for this is the way true men and women face life's uncertainties.

HD EAD 3D MARIO. BOOM.

MARIO KART U looks like a multiplayer blast. BOOM.

SMASH BROTHERS U trailer makes you feel like a kid inside. BOOM.

BAYONETTA 2's ass. BOOM.

RETRO does whatever the hell they want and it rocks. BOOM.

ZELDA U mini-teaser. BOOM.

X looks like a system-seller. BOOM.

YARN YOSHI takes the fantastic mechanics of Epic Kirby and makes it into an actual video game. BOOM.

the graphics for all of the above demonstrate that the Wii U is a clear leap over last generation. BOOM BOOM BOOM.

the above is all on the table. it's gonna radioactive in here, i just sense it. i don't call it hype; i call it faith. who's with me?
You opened my eyes. I'll be out there, arms opened right next to you bro. :,)

Wow your fucking killing me lol!

So what do you guys think about another ambassador program if Nintendo decides to lower the price of the Wii U? Would you be upset, happy, frustrated?

Personally, I would be glad that they atleast do something for fans of the system who bought early, and 5-10 free games doesn't hurt at all. Hope they do a price cut, this system needs it badly.

I wanna play! I'm going to assume they will also have a 3DS direct/broadcasted event so here's my predicted overview.

0:00-0:01 Summer of Luigi
0:01-0:05 Mario Golf is highlighted
0:06-0:10 new Mario and Luigi trailer is shown
0:11-0:13 Limited edition Luigi 3DS XL Mario & Luigi bundle releases this summer MSRP $229.99
0:14-0:17 Animal Crossing New Leaf FREE DLC launches soon. highlights features.
0:18-0:24 Pokemon X/Y new trailer is shown. Gameplay and battle features demonstrated.
0:25-0:29 First look into SSB 3DS. Teaser trailer shown highlighting a new character who hasn't previously starred in a SB game.
0:30 Some trailers shown are available for download now in the eShop. Thank you for joining us today.
No way LTTP 2 or Yoshi's Island don't show up, plus I'm sure one or two other unannounced games.

I would be upset, because that means they don't have confidence in their own system or the games they are launching in the next 6 months

You forgot Star Fox and F-Zero! And all you need left for Nintendo to rule the world is exclusives like Shenmue 3, Beyond Good & Evil 2, and for Banjo-Kazooie to be bought back from Microsoft and become a Nintendo staple again. Then we're set.

I feel like there's no way they don't end the Direct with Smash Bros. Even if it's not necessarily a surprise... how do you follow a new Smash Bros trailer?

With twenty minutes of Wii Fit U.

With a complete surprise or The Legend of Zelda.

Really, though, they led with Smash Brothers in 2001 and that was a great conference.

If they announce half of that, they will win the forever.

I just want a damn Wario game on my 3DS. That's the only bomb I need.

Probably not going to happen with the 3DS, but there's plenty of potential for a real WarioWare game on the Wii U, especially one with a multiplayer focus like Smooth Moves had.

I expect them to open with either 3d mario or smash bros. to hold their audience captive. Smash bros is great to remind people of the power of Nintendo's brands. I also expect them to take some time to discuss the summer system update, future plans of virtual console, 3ds connectivity and squeeze in wii fit and wii party in there. That whole segment should be around 20 min. The rest will be pure games.

So what are the chances of Capcom or Squeenix making a Nintendo exclusive game?

squeenix doesn't really have much to give. they've obviously got way too much going on with the MMOs. capcom is pretty likely. i can see capcom going under the nintendo umbrella during the generation switch just like namco-bandai is. too much uncertainty going on to do much otherwise.

Guys, a thought just crossed my mind: we are one week from seeing hd mario for the first time. IMAGINE THE BOSSES! HUGE, BEAUTIFUL 3D MARIO BOSS FIGHTS IN HD!!

I'm still super excited.

Namco Bandai is under the Nintendo umbrella? Wut? Their support for 3DS is unparalleled but like most third parties they have ignored the WiiU completely. A lot of their big games this year don't even come out on the system.
