You can not redo kindof just felt like an entirely pointless movie, it's like the awkward downtime between two interesting events (the aftermath of 2, and what's presumably going to happen in the next one)
the whole movie kind of felt like nothing important happened. yeah there was some interesting imagery and the action scenes were pretty good but it felt more like a bridge than anything of it's own- like the build up episodes to a finale
The only thing I can come up with
is that the film reinforces the idea that Shinji has absolutely no agency at all and that both times that he tried to accomplish something of his own will, he was always acting according to his father's plans.
