Given the last 2 weddings we've seen. I can't imagine what kind of fucked up shit will happen with Joffery's...

Do the Starks have a theme song?

You know all my love for the Starks is because of Bean. His portrayal of Ned has made me cry for the Starks for 3 seasons now.

One quick question. To where are Osha and Rickon going?

Now with Robb out of the picture. I want to know more about whoever is in charge of the Dorne and to who Myrcella was promised.

Bran told them to go to the Umbers. Remember the guy in S1 who got his fingers bitten off by Grey Wind, and then became one of Robb's fiercest supporters? He's the lord of the Umbers.

Every wedding should have a groom stabbing the table and threatening to cut someone's dick off.
Yes, but who's going to feed it to the goats? Since apparently Shagga isn't around anymore...

Edit: In fact, where is the axe-wielding lummox and the rest of the hill tribes? It's like they've been completely 'disapparated'.

I don't understand, the North still has meaning?

Certainly. Winterfell was sacked and burned, but they're not the only town/keep in the North. Presumably, given the size of the army Robb raised, there are significant farmlands and so on up North to support that many men. It's also a large territory, if you look at the maps.

Yeah, it's a huge part of the realm and important to the Iron Throne. The Tyrells and the Lannisters were scuffling over Sansa for that reason.

To keep the people of the north happy right?

I think the title has all but lost its luster thanks to the Lannisters.

The best team in GoT.

Yeah, someone still needs to be Lord of the place to control it and a Lord that the rest of the region will accept. The Stark bloodline has ruled for so long that they are what everyone will accept.

Of course with Karstarks mad at the Starks now and the Boltons actively betraying them who knows what the future holds? Still it's all about claims and as far as the world knows Sansa is the only surviving Stark and whatever babies she has will be the future rulers of Winterfell.

Always had a theory during Season 2 about Benjen and Jon Snow (maybe someone else pointed it out, because its not completely unobvious). Ned, being the honorable man that he is, took a hit for his brother, a Crow who fathered Jon (punishable by death, no?)...protecting his brother being the honorable thing and taking in Jon as his own. I always thought Jon looked a lot like Benjen. In that first season, Jon Snow as so excited to see when Benjen arrived at Winterfell...I know it was because he really wanted to become a ranger, and hear stories from the wall...but maybe there's some deeper connection he's unaware of.

It would be awesome if Benjen still lives, and is Jon's real father and they both go into the south to bring some Stark joostice!

That would be so fucking cool.

The importance of the North to the Lannisters is underscored by who they married to Sansa -- one of only two men who are direct descendants of Tywin Lannister. There are any number of cousins they could have fobbed off on her, but Tywin chose to tie Winterfell directly to his own house. Given his opinion of Tyrion, I suspect if Jaime had been there, he'd have been forced to marry Sansa.

Edit: Now that's a scene I'd like to see.

I usually write this thing the day after the episode airs, but Rains of Castamere was so fucking brutal and emotionally taxing I didn't have the guts to go over it again. I just stayed there for five minutes, mouth half open, trying to figure out what the fuck did I just watch. I don't think I've had a biggest WHY-face in my entire life. It was as if the writers took turns to punch me in the gut and finished the job by pissing in my mouth as I grasped for air. Not. Cool.

I think the most amazing thing is that I actually *knew* that Robb was going to die (which is also why I decided not to speculate too much about Robb's prospects in this thread). I got spoiled last season due to some idiotic Tumblr kiddie who decided to post a meme-ish picture making fun of Robb taking an arrow at something called the Red Wedding, but I still didn't see this coming. I mean, Walder was thorny at first, but he quickly became happy and ""pleasant"" (extra "" there) as he married his pretty daughter to Edmure. His demeanour just looked legit pleased, not scheming in the slightest. It wasn't until the Frey men blocked the door when I noticed that shit was about to go sideways, yet STILL couldn't believe things could go so fucking wrong. Man, I was so not prepared. So there we are at a wedding, everybody is laughing, Cat's happy, Robb finally has the men required to take the Lannister's seat and Talisa is expecting her first child... who'll be named Ed, no less. I was thinking that maybe the writers had decided to change things a little bit since Robb happens to be so damn popular, but no sir, they had to go and shit on everybody's happiness from the highest tower. Fuck me.

Anyways, some observations:

  • Are some of Walder's daughters pregnant?

  • Walder's admitting that he would have broken his bows if he were on Robb's shoes. I think this is the point when I began to think that maybe Walder was not going to give him such a hard time after all...
  • Ser Barristan offered to help infiltrating Yunkai, yet Jorah refused and even confronted him, arguing that he should remain by Dany's side. Is it me or Jorah doesn't feel safe around Ser Barristan AT ALL? He really seems to have a mind prone to dishonesty.
  • Sam + Gilly. OMG.

  • The Hound's scenes with Arya are still among the best things in this show. Still, I'm a bit confusing about their dynamic. She obviously hates his guts, but he doesn't seem so bad (murderous impulses aside) now that he's far out of the Lannister's influence. I have to wonder if Arya could ever forgive him for killing that boy.
  • Osha taking Rickon's comment about drinking blood from someone's skull and running with it was hilarious. I love how her character has progressed.
  • I also love that Rickon had something to say at least. His actor is actually competent and I wish he had something more meaningful to do that standing in front of the camera to remind us that there are other Starks alive.
  • And of course...

  • That said, the scenes at the windmill/with the wildlings were a complete MESS. There were so many things wrong it's hard to believe. Hardass, cautious Thormund not wanting to investigate creeping noises at the windmill, Bran not finishing off the rest of the wildling party with the direwolves (where they standing idle after chomping at the first two or three wildlings? and why Thormund stayed so casually there after Jon ran away? Because I'd be shitting bricks and hauling ass as far as I could if I were near the vicinity of any of those beasts), Bran not giving a rat ass about Jon being there... Seriously, piss poor effort by the director and everybody involved in the production.
  • I think it's rather interesting that Bran can warg himself into animals but also people while nobody else can. Deep, baseless speculation spoiled for the easily scared:
I assume that Dragons can't be mind controlled due to being magical creatures, but maybe that's not that much of an issue for him?
  • Oh man, when that eagle attacked Jon... I honestly thought for a moment that bird had taken his eyes out.
  • This image was gorgeous.

I hope we get to know more about the rest of Esso's deities besides the Lord of the Light (we probably won't).

  • The conquest of Yunkai was another poorly filmed and even worse explained part of this episode. Did they CONVINCE the slave soldiers to put their weapons down? Because surely they couldn't fight the second group just by themselves before the rest of Yunkai's army surrendered...
  • I like Dany and everything, but rolling over Essian cities just like that is starting to become a meme.

L-O-L

  • Man, Edmure lucked out for real. That girl was seriously beautiful. I loved his look of fear when they pulled her veil over and then how his eyes brightened after seeing that she wasn't the horrible beast he was expecting.

  • Roose Bolton being a greasy turd through the whole episode was incredible to watch. Holy shit, what a clan/family of lying, sadistic fucks. I hope they get excised from this coil with extreme prejudice.
  • I still can't believe how the writers fooled me with Talisa and Robb's happiness. That whole exchange about the baby... ugh. Everything was finally so right for them I couldn't imagine things were going to go sideways this soon. Jesus.
  • THE BLACKFISH GOT OUT BEFORE THE MASSACRE. I thought at first he had been slain with the rest of the people, but since he wasn't seen after the whole act I'm honestly thinking he saw something when he was soiling a tree and decided to haul ass after realising that he couldn't do shit.
  • I'm glad we got to see a bit more about the marriage customs in Westeros.
  • The music... man... As soon as they closed the door shut and the music began to play I knew something bad was going to happen. Still, I didn't want to believe that Robb was about to die, even if I already knew that was going to happen sooner or later. Nothing could have ever prepare me for what happened right after that.
  • Frey's men taking aim at Talisa's belly... JESUS CHRIST. That was just the meanest, sickest thing I've ever seen on TV. It's like they wanted to make everything in their hand to ruin your happiness after being witness of Robb and Talisa's joy. My god. Also, there's no doubt in my mind that they just wanted to end by all means any possibility of having another Stark in the world.
  • They had to kill the wolf, didn't they? Again, it's like the writers were taking turns to punch me in the gut. The way they killed it in the pen, without giving it a single chance to rip some throats was fucking vile.
  • Cat's death. I have no words to put how absolutely harrowing was her performance. I don't think I've ever seen a more convincing and saddening display of rage and despair on a TV show. Give Michelle Fairley all the awards. And then some hours of therapy, because I can absolutely see how her and Richard Madden were obliterated for several days after filming that scene. I think I'd spiral into depression for a good couple of weeks.
  • Ending the episode with no music at all was a brilliant choice. Made the utter horror of the carnage and the vileness of the deception even more profound and sick. It just left you there, trembling and trying to understand what just happened.

Random musings:

  • I'm going to keep watching the show because I just can't quit, but fuck me if they didn't kill in one swoop the only character you felt good rooting for. Robb is gone. Cat is gone. Most of the northern army has been slaughtered and even if a few men managed to escape, they are going to be disorganised and won't have the required power to even hold their land. The North is done for. What's left for us? The Lannisters are cunts, Dany bores me to tears and Littlefinger... yeah, fuck Littlefinger. At this point I'm rooting for the White Walkers to eat everybody in Westeros and get done with it.
  • What's going to happen with Edmure Tully? My guess is that he's going to remain a hostage of Walder Frey (not that he can rebel against him ATM...), but as incompetent as he is I can't picture him brushing his sister's death just like that. I sincerely hope they didn't pull him out of his bed just to slay him with the rest.
  • I really, really hope The Blackfish is alive and well so he can plot his revenge. There's no way he's going to let things stay this way.
  • I wonder what's going to happen with Littlefinger's marriage now that Cat is dead. And I also wonder if Littlefinger will be able to put his fondness for Cat past his personal ambitions, as powerful as they are.
  • So who's the new protector of the North? Jon cannot claim shit. He's a bastard and a member of the Night's Watch, which basically forbids him from being other than a crow. Arya, Bran and Rickon are presumed dead by everybody and they are going to remain as such for a good while. I honestly can't see Tyrion ruling the north next to Sansa... she may be a Stark, but there's no way people around Winterfell are going to accept him.

Looking forward the next episode. I can't say I imagine how they are planning to end this season.

loved the casting of this guy.
He looks like he could legitimately be related to Sean Bean to me.

If he's alive, I can't imagine the anger he's going to have finding out:
-his brother is dead (executed)
-his sister-in-law is dead (assassinated)
-one of his oldest nephews is dead (assassinated)
-two of his youngest nephews are presumed dead (murdered)
-one of his nieces is missing/presumed dead
-another one of his nieces married a Lannister

My god...

The other thread isn't even just a book topic, it's a book topic for the show, which makes even less sense for book readers to want to come here to talk about it, since they'd relate way more to the people who also read the books and watch the show.
It's interesting to read the reactions of virgins to the events. It's nice being able to talk to people who haven't experienced the material before.

Thank you for the explanation.

I thought the exact same thing. We aren't so lucky it would seem :P

I keep expecting the North to retaliate somehow for 3 seasons, and other than some battles and capturing Jamie, I've yet to see them get any payback. I think I'm bout to join Team Stannis yall. A dude whose a bit brainwashed, but knows what it takes to get things done.

If he's alive...

There's basically no way, though, right? I mean, he's been gone for God knows how long at this point, presumably without supplies, in the wilds of the far North surrounded by wildlings and zombies and White Walkers and shit... and didn't they find his hand? Or something?

Plus he's a Stark, which means nature itself is out to get him.

But the thing is, Stannis isn't brainwashed, at least not anymore. The Lord of Light may not be what he thinks it is, I'm speculating there's something more behind it, but it showed results by killing Renly and apparently aiding in Robb's death. Melisandre has never done a single thing to harm him or his quest for the throne, and he's certainly not a zealot like his wife.

Also he took his men in to Blackwater without her at Davos' request, and look where it led him, I can't really blame the dude for wanting to use Melisandre's magic more.

Everyone needs to join Team Stannis now Robb is gone.

Watch some of the DVD extras, especially that one about how Davos met him, and him being a badass during Balon Greyjoy's rebellion.

Also his view of morality, that your good acts and bad acts don't cancel each other out, is very fitting for the series I feel.

True. I'mma go team Stannis unless he hurts Arya.

Great recap Funky. Awesome stuff dude.

I'm still team Arya and Bran. Foolishly I fear, but I can't help myself.

Part of me also really wants to sit down now and read the books. It is just too hard waiting a year between each season, but at the same time not knowing what is going to happen just makes this show so fucking good.

Lord Bolton's got to have some part to play in leading the North, he's the only major Northern Lord still standing and he's allied with the Lannisters. He's already rich apparently so Tywin's got to give him more than gold for his treason.

Yeah, so what happened is shocking, but I'm sitting here looking at the third season as a whole and it hasn't been that interesting. It feels very scattered. Of course, I realize this is one half of a storm of swords so we're in the middle, I guess? I dunno. Feels very unsatisfying so far and I don't see how the next episode will be able to make it any better.

I know what you mean. Everything was building towards the Red Wedding, so before this episode it seemed like there wasn't going to be any payoff or big event. It's interesting now to look back on the previous episodes to see how they lead up to and foreshadow the events of the RW.

Anyone have a gif of whats her face gettin her tummy stabbed?

Friend of mine just got knocked up, thought it'd be fun to show her that gif.
