The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

Who cares about the reviews?? It's always going to be people that don't like it as much as others did and that's fine. The general consensus across the board is that the game is amazing as hell and is truly worthy of it's hype(by reviewers, early players and demo players.)

At the end of the day, what matters is how you liked it. I hated Uncharted before ever playing it and just bought it on a whim. Ended up being my favorite franchise this gen and i didn't even know about the review scores. In the long run, ND hit the ball out the city and it's overall average is showing that. TLOU is going to shatter our hearts and make us weep next week so lets just be thankful and wait patiently as this gem comes across us.

*Shits on Polygon somewhere else on the internet*

Congrats, Naughty Dog! It seems you outstripped even my incredibly high expectations. Over to you, Beyond: Two Souls.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
These scores ar craaaaazy!

GTA4's a great game.

This isn't the tread for that discussion, I trust EDGE, they are condescending gaming snobs, which make them excellent reviewers, and I know they aren't trapped in the 9-10 bubble, games have to be pretty bloody impressive to score anything close to 9 for them, so this really is impressive.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Hah, all these people who hate that site just give it so much attention. I had no idea who they were but it's like the girl at school who pretends to hate the boy but obsesses over him.

Someone who doesnt know what he is talking about. Cool.

I'm guessing Polygon got more comments on their review page than most of the reviews listed on Metacritic even got views... :/

Edit: They've said that yesterday, did they mean the review embargo?

How did I know Polygon was going to do that? I wanted to predict it yesterday but didn't want to be one of those review score people. I really don't care about the score, it's just that it keeps feeling more and more like we're going to finally hear about some details behind a Polygon 'scandal' any day now.

If it had come from another reviewer it would be less noteworthy. Not because Polygon is noteworthy, but because you know...

BTW I do think 7.5 is a 'bad' score. 75%? That's a straight C, average.
It's not horrible, but it's skipable, it's passable, it's average.
I think that's what it really means, it's not exciting or memorable or intriguing and leaves no lasting impression...it's average.

Who wants average? Sure I play lots of average games but mediocracy is often worse than a huge failure. It's not even as memorable as a terrible game; you can have good stupid fun with those often. We want to be thrilled or drawn into an experience. When I see a score like that I think the reviewer played the whole thing and felt nothing at all, not even a notable negative reaction.

So honestly yes, when I see a 6-7 score I think it's a poor score for the game. I don't think any dev shoots for average.

I want to know why GameTrailers has no score...

Sure. Not enough time with multiplayer and big restrictions on footage as well to cobble a full review. Also, 'cause you know we want to spoil it when you find out the whole game takes place in the matrix.

More seriously, it's an amazing game that's more so more not being an overly innovative one. Naughty Dog has often been good at refinement, but here the various systems are familiar but chord into an interesting way, with expert pacing, characters and scenarios that stay fresh throughout.

I get echoes of Half-Life 2 from the linear-but-wide level structure, and world building. It's not perfect and I don't really believe a 10 means perfection either. I also get echoes of when I played Half-Life 1 with it's slow, blurring lead in. I had read the hype back in 1998 and was wondering when the game was going to get good, and hours in, I realized it had been amazing the whole time. In the same way, TLOU doesn't really start until 2 hours in, but that's not because of cutscenes and tutorials, it's just good storytelling, game design, and hard-won marriage between the two.

Sure, but coming from Polygon it just seems shady. They currently have NO credibility and shouldnt even be mentioned anywhere.

Sure, people wouldnt complain if they gave a 10/10 score, but that doesnt change the fact that they simply arent a credible reviewing outlet, so I dont get why they should be treated as such.

I'm sorry, but I don't know ANY gaming review outlet that could be considered "credible" review outlets. You could find some shady shit that all of them have done before and/or games they have vastly overrated if you really looked into it.

For example, let us take away the Polygon review. Let us say they did in fact give the game a 10. Where would all the focus be? On Gamespot. And we would have the same exact posts except with "Polygon" replaced by "Gamespot" and some added complaints involving Jeff Gerstmann, Kane & Lynch, 8.8 Twilight Princess, and whatever "mediocre" games they gave a 8 or above.

Well, let it be known that it can never hurt to throw out a question without expecting an answer. Thanks for the insight!
