Holy shit at all the hate for a 7.5 review.

If I told people I thought GTA 4 deserved a 7 I wonder if I would have been assassinated.

I don't go by averages though, I have a select few journalists I feel I have similar tastes to and they seem to enjoy it well enough for me to be confident in my purchase. (was going to by this game no matter what scores it got)

lol ars technica has the best final verdict. They also don't put a score to the game:

Verdict: Consider picking up a PS3 if you don't have one.

It's not about the low review scores ruining our experience, it's about the effect it has on naughty dog. Unfortunetly publishers use metacritic for business negotiations and bonuses with developers. It also affects sales. The last of us seems like it is one of the best games in its genre. It probably deserves at least 9-10.

In a day where studios invest so much money and go out of business, then yes, a fair review of the game is important. It's just reality, I only hope the game sells many millions to support the genius that is Naughty Dog.
I'm sure poor little Naughty Dog will do fine with mostly perfect scores.

Lol yeah Im sure nd is crying over a few bad reviews

well the metacritic score would've been higher, and they could've used that in there tv adverts, advertising one of the highest games rated this gen.

As it stands now, it sits among alot of other great games..but fails to meet the majestic heights that previous games like Bioshock, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and GTA IV have achieved.

I do not agree. I think I proved my point quite well.

Sorry, you're right, I had the wrong idea of the point you were trying to make.

But even then I still don't agree with your opinion even now that I realise what you were trying to say. Pilotwings for example is a 7.25 for what it is trying to achieve, which isn't the same as 'it's only 0.25 points worse that TLOU!'. Same goes for Kirby, which is a great platformer, but may not be as good a game as TLOU.

In order to prove your point, you need to both show scores from the same reviewer and from the same genre. The genre might even be the most important factor there.

Finally got a chance to watch Sessler's review, the music gives me goosebumps and he described the game in a way that it's hard not to get excited.

Good thing I have state of decay and E3 to keep me occupied until this comes out.

The entirety of the games journalism industry has turned into Famitsu, giving every good game a perfect score. I just can't take it seriously anymore after the rabid response we saw to Bioshock Infinite. Yes, Bioshock was a great game, but did it deserve all those perfect scores? Probably not.

This is turning into a "boy who cried wolf" scenario for me. I have zero doubts that Last of Us is going to be incredible, but I'm not going to get carried away with all this hype brought on by games journalist outlets with an apparent review scale that is either "Buy" or "Don't Buy".

Everyone needs to calm down and stop getting so upset over a score aggregator. If you want read the reviews to get annoyed with them after you play the game, but don't freak out over scores now. They are designed to make definitive statements both the positive and negative reviews.

We won't know until a few weeks or months after we play the game, if this game will stick with us.

It's getting great scores anyway. Be happy with that. It looks like the gaming press enjoys it a lot.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
You know the polygon guy who reviewed the game twittered all the time about the game before his review came out. Of course he wanted that shitstorm.

You would have been welcomed with open arms here on GAF, also, review scores are meaningless without the context of the reviewers writing and general taste in games.

High scores and reviews that focus almost entirely on production values and storytelling only make me suspicious.

They'll live.

Come on now. They can still throw a list of 10s in the ads. Nd isnt jesus they dont need constant praise

These threads are always like a wake up call to what some gaffers are like. I really need to better my skills at taking mental notes so I know in the future when im discussing with people who complain about an 7.5 or 8 score on a game they haven't played themselves, purely based on the scores said game gets on other sites. It's really embarrasing.

Im sure this is just another comment in a sea of similar ones and on what's a common practice at this point but it still kinda catches me by surprise every time.

Well....i'm skeptical...

Remeber GTA IV?? It has a 97% score on Gamerankings (could not find it om metacritic)
Hell the last game that was praised to the skies was bioshock infinite.

None of these games deserved a 10/10

So, originally I wanted to wait for a price drop, but not sure If I can hold out after these reviews and all the story spoilers that will be flying around...

What is this referencing?

This isn't the first time I've seen this spouted in the thread.

Polygon is run by a known MS moneyhat, and before the XBone was revealed, MS supporters, including the owner of Polygon, were insisting that MS had some "secret sauce" in the tech that would make up for the lackluster specs.

Has anybody that has played the game in this thread detailed what they found wrong about the review that gave the game a 7.5?

I reiterate again - I find scores to be a useless metric. I would prefer a review, detailing the pros and cons of the game and what the reviewer thought about it. I don't need some arbitrary number to help me out.

most people just want the number and nothing else.

You sound like an expert. One of the best troll posts since Muppet.

Yeah this. Gaming storytelling - particular the Naughty Dog kind - is shit. After the Edge review of Bioshock Infinite that generally pointed out the same flaws as the original but gave it a higher score anyway (although to be fair I haven't played it yet; waiting for a price drop) I'm more sceptical than I was.

Ps the score wank is fucking embarrassing

My heart truly bleeds for them.

Damn a 95 average on metacritic. I was always going to pick it up day 1 but damn!!! all those 10's!!!

Congrats Naughty Dog you absolutely deserve all the praise you get. E3 with the PS4 launch details followed by TLOU. What a great week to be a gamer.
