The enemy AI not recognizing the player's friendly NPCs sounds dumb but I get why ND did it. Wave-based enemy sections sounds a tad bit disappointing, if poorly executed can really detract from this kind of game. Other than that, not going to bother reading the reviews because I was going to pick it up next week anyway.

Rare freak outs?

This is the second or third time I've seen people go stupid over lower scores of Naughty Dog games.

Stop being obtuse. I've been around here and posting for years and years. This happens with every big tent pole release and exclusive. Halo, GOW, Mario, Zelda etc. Are you forgetting the infamous Zelda TP one? That was over an 8.8...

Don't let the scores get on to you nerves and just follow the reviewers who you trusted so far. That said, It seems this game is phenomenal.
My initial congrats to Naughty dog :)

It has nothing to do with playing the game.

It's about Polygons agenda and the score they attached it with.

Of course it has something to do with playing the game. How can he guarantee that TLoU is (objectively) better than all the other games listed there without playing all of these?

Jim Sterling's and Klepek's reviews were particularly good reads.

As far as the thread, the concern trolls were much more annoying than any fanboyism, which for awhile barely existed until the Polygon score.

Haven't played Last of Us, but Polygon gave top marks to games like Sim City that were fundamentally broken. Not sure how they can justify putting a fully functioning and well polished game beneath broken ones, never mind subjective preferences.

Good to hear the game seems to deliver the goods.

Destructoid pointed out something that worries me here. They say when it finished they were perfectly content and didn't want any more. Like it was perfect as a one-off game

But this is the games industry. Sadly I see there being a last of us 3 around 5 years from now when it seems like it lends itself so well to not being a typical game franchise and instead just a good singular project

I think they could pull off other stories in that world, if they abandon Joel and Ellie completely.
I am kind of fed up with post apocalyptic setting though, so i wish they'd move on.

You guarantee none of them are as good as The Last of Us? A videogame that you have not played at all? Should he give The Last of Us high marks for any reason other than his personal conclusions from playing the game?

You're making assumptions that he hasn't played it. PAX East and a demo from Ascension mean that he could have actually played the game. Why he feels more qualified after playing 40 mins compared to these reviewers who played 18 hours, I'm not sure.

People wonder why Polygon's review matters...it matters because they're still considered a viable "opinion" by outsiders. Analysts & stock holders will see that and say, "Naughty Dog didn't completely hit this one out of the park". Also, with Polygon's shitty review system here are just a few games that had a better score than Last of Us.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Remember Me
Night of the Rabbit
Metro: Last Light
SimCity (2013) - original review
Gears of War Judgement
Dead Space 3
Black Ops 2
WWE '13

Some of those games are good, some bad, but I guarantee that none of them are as good as The Last of Us.

In conclusion, to Polygon:

Wall of shame highlight?

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Don't hear much about the gameplay, AI, etc. You sneak around and beat peoples brains in while a girl with an anxious face follows you is all I can tell.

Why are all these reviews so caught up on how "emotional" it is? It has cool cut scenes I guess.

And that's the worrying thing. The reviews are very clear on how it advances storytelling and all that... but they don't seem particularly concerned with whether or not this is actually a good... y'know, game.

Which, if you're on the fence, is kind of annoying.

Don't really care about Polygon's score for the game, but the review itself sounds whiny. So when the infected are actually deadly, it's a BAD thing? Or them trying to make this less of a shooter by somewhat gimping the guns so that it actually takes some skill to hit people is a bad thing? We can't all like challenging games, but if you get frustrated by it because of your own lack of skill, is it the game's fault?

lolol

This is the first time I've seen you in a PS3 game thread.

Well, I've started plenty of PS3 threads (not OT though), and every multiplat game I get or disscuss about is for PS3.

Why are you giving a shit. Seriously, this late in the console cycle even. There's no battle anymore, there's just opinions. I consider Polygon completely irrelevant, but if there's people whose opinions line up with Polygon (dudebros working for MS most likely), then all the better for them that there is an outlet they can trust.

That was also 7 years ago now. Still horribly embarrassing, but Skyward Sword didn't seem to have the same outcry. UC3 did much more recently, and it is already happening again.

It really shouldn't happen at all, ever. It is embarrassing every time without fail, and even knowing we have posters that will quote it all and shame everyone it still happens.

I'd hate to sing the same tune but polygon is a damn joke
Between this and the Sim City review And Doritos pope they should be take with the largest grain of salt possible
Granted I haven't played the game so this is all just an observation

No, nobody will say that, because most people with a functioning brain know that there are these things called "outliers." They also know that opinions are not universal and nothing is loved by 100% of people.

Too be honest the 8.8 situation was actually scary. People were legitimately calling for blood for that one. You just have a bunch of people here trying to get a rise from people because they think it's "entertaining". Quite sad really.

Where is the nut job mag saying the controls were shit and had high lag? Not one review has it listed, or a issue.... Another click bait response a month ago?

Color me shocked that Gamespot and Polygon gave it the 2 lowest reviews.

Could we get a list of the best couple of spoiler-free reviews from the rest of the bunch?

Its about comparing opinions.

Dead Space 3 averaged in the high 70's

Remember me is in the mid 60's

Metro is in the low 80's.

The last of us is in the mid 90's.

They wanted a drastic opinion for hits. Plain and simple.

Polygon can always just change the score like they did with SimCity.

I have to say this game wasn't really on my radar, but all these crazy scores have piqued my interest.

Join my queue, Last of Us. I'll give you a spot right at the top -back of the line, Dragon's Dogma! You can share the leftover cold pizza with Demon's Souls if you're hungry.

Wow. It's the Uncharted 3 review thread all over again.

One of....I can easily see this making a ton of people's top 5 greatest games of all time lists.

I know it’s been said a hundred times already, but this really seems like the RE4 of this gen.

I like how you don't let the fact you haven't played the game hold you back from making these declarations.

15-20 hours is certainly not what I expected, and is awesome news. That's like my sweet spot for single player games.

It really worries me if it's as repetitive as people are saying. 15-20 hours is fine for a game like RE4, which puts you in so many different situations and scenarios. But if Last of Us has Uncharted-like progression, it's going to get really boring pretty fast.

Meh, I'm waiting on this game. Too much review talk about the emotional response and not enough about new fun gameplay innovations. It really does sound more of the same. I will wait a few months and get the real opinion, and see if a superior PS4 version will be released. If not, then I will get it cheap.
