Microsoft: Xbox One DRM has a "lot of advantages"

He said he would share further details later. I'll be excited to hear those details, because the benefits for the consumer are hard to see at this point.

Name two advantages of DRM (p.s. cloud saves don't require DRM)

Two Advantages to who? Consumers who want to keep practicing rights they don't have? Publishers? Developers? Microsoft?

I'll give you 2 for each:

Publisher+Developers:
1) People are buying your games new, no two ways about it. New or nothing. You are getting money for EVERY single game bought.
2) Microsoft's system for trading in and selling used games also gives you more money. You take a share of it! Nice!

Microsoft:
1) They take a cut of used games and trade in now! Making some money they deserve, nice!
2) They're in full control and will no longer have content stolen from them under there noses like they did with the 360, where people would buy a game, give their profile to their friends, and license transfer and now 2 people got the game for the price of one. If it happens now, they're in full control and will ban said accounts! Nice!

Consumer:
1) Every game you own is now in the cloud! Nice! Your copy of Forza Motorsports 5 no longer requires the disc, less luggage to carry around when you want to go to your friends house and play splitscreen with him! Less effort for you to play what you want to play since you won't have to swap discs.
2) Your Xbox will always be connected and will always be on! You can now always be in the known with your friends, you can now skype while you play! Built in game recording and live streaming! Watch TV while you play, and instant background updates!

There's more to that story.

See, guys? It's totally clear!

:/
When they put it like that it just comes off more and more as alienating everyone but the richer people who don't really mind just buying redundant things like an Xbox One for every TV or whatever. And the trade offs for these conveniences isn't really worth it (nevermind that like said if I want those offer me the game digitally and I will buy it that way.)

On the plus side I guess it's proof for any weirdos who actually thought they would do something dumb like emulate Nintendo's setup.

Interesting. Does hiring Phil Harrison have a "lot of advantages" too? Because I can't see those ones either.

Edit: Also, the story is from May 22nd.
Ridiculous.

I have to download that shit everytime I want to use it on a different box (or install it from a disc).

How is that better than just putting in a disc and start playing?

MS just can't spin this. They have absolutely nothing.

'Hey Phil, should we give Last of Us only a 7.5?'

I'd laugh if it wasn't true.

That does not require always on or used game DRM.

None of that tells me why a deployed soldier needs to have his system check online every 24 hours. Going discless could be an option and not a mandate. I should also be able to remain disc-based to play offline, or be able to be like STEAM which can be played offline for an entire deployment without needing internet access.

Fear of me being a possible pirate does not give free reign to nerf my ability to play my game.

1) That's some piddly bullshit. Sacrifice consumer rights so you don't have to carry a disc around? Yay?

2) That doesn't require DRM at all.

Current xbox live download games DRM works well, you can use it on the xbox you bought it on and any other box as long as you are logged into your live account.

What other benefit can a timed online check give you???

the only reason for the 24hr check would be due to supporting used games and/or trade-ins in some way. Otherwise, there would be no need for it, since it would be tied to the hardware offline like current Xbox digital content. (so in a way, buying digitally would be more convenient than buying on disc, like you mentioned)

Of course, this could all change depending on whatever the final plans are.

That does not require always on or used game DRM.
"You can now always be in the known with your friend"

You= always online.
Friend= always online.

Xbox One's trending feature= always online to tell you what you friends are up too.

That wouldn't be "always online" without the Xbox One being "always online." ;)

And instant background downloads, while your Xbox is "off" is only plausible because the Xbox is "always on" and "always connected". Otherwise you'd have to manually turn it on and start the updates. You don't anymore.

Doesnt matter. We are in full on pile on mode bro lol.

See?

I don't see how I was piling on at all. I agree that most everyone is in pile on mode, though, which is why I would make them just the hell up about it until they can talk freely about their plan.

LOL what about this requires DRM?

I like Xbox One best for its new and exciting features, such as stuff and things. I can recall a time when I never imagined I'd be able to do so much whatever I can do with a game console!

What if I don't want to? Options are better than artificial restrictions.

Isn't there some option for background downloads already included in the 360's features?

never heard about the cat, apparently
story is from may 22nd.
Xbox One games will be locked to each owners’ profile – a system which has “a lot of advantages,” says Microsoft Studios’ corporate vice president Phil Spencer.

Amid confusion (and consternation) over the place of second hand games on Xbox One, Spencer told us that Microsoft “recognises the importance” of trading in games but maintained that we’d have to wait for specifics on how Microsoft will address this market.

“We think, actually, that having the content that’s yours go with you is an important thing,” he told us. “You could have multiple Xbox Ones, your content is yours on every one of them, and it doesn’t require that you carry discs back and forth. The disc becomes a means of distributing the bits back and forth but the content is locked to you.”

When we asked what happens if players want to lend a game to a friend, Spencer replied: “I think the whole idea of a secondary market is important and it’ll be important in the next generation and we’ve designed [Xbox One] with that in mind from the beginning. We think there are a lot of advantages of having your content assigned to you digitally – we did that on 360 with cloud-saved games – and we want to do that with content.”

“We understand there are implications to secondary; just know that we recognise the importance of that market and we’ve designed with that in mind from the beginning. We’ll share more details as we get further along the road.”

So many benefits, I'm fucking drowning in all of the benefits he has presented here. And by drowning I mean that my lungs are filling with fluid from holding my breath for so long.

The only 'benefit to the customer' i can possibly see them spinning is that you don't need to put the disc in. Which is a benefit we can currently enjoy by going digital...

Any feigned 'benefits' of this can be done with a system that doesn't force online.

Tell me how you could give a unique key to a disc that allows that disc to be registered to you, and as a consequence, doesn't require the disc to be played further. However, upon that disc being traded to another person (or borrowed), the key inactivates your digital copy. Tell me how that would be done offline.

1) That's some piddly bullshit. Sacrifice consumer rights so you don't have to carry a disc around? Yay?

... What consumer right? Private selling is the only thing gone. and you know what? That's not even gone.

We all know that you don't own the "right" to the game data. You don't buy the right to "own" the game. You own the "right" to play the game. The content on the discs isn't yours, and it never was. It's always been Sony/Microsoft/Activision/Ubisoft/Take Two/etcs content. Always has, always been.

Hey, you know what! Private selling isn't even gone! You can still sell the worthless case, manual, and disc itself. That belongs to you. The "data" on the disc isn't yours though. So when you sell it, you just don't sell the part that isn't legally yours. Feel free to sell your case though, and the manual, and the box art, and even the disc art, they just don't get the game "data" itself. Private selling is still technically there. :)

I, though, personally don't know anyone who'd buy a Game case, I wouldn't.

Whether or not this is right is another discussion. But technically we all agree to these terms when we buy the game, and we open the case up.

How is that a "benefit" again?

One-time online activation + one-time online deactivation. The next owner would have to connect only once with his console as well.
