TitanFall (EA/Respawn, PC/XB1/360, Spring 2014, Game Informer Leak, All Info In OP)

Im sure its been stated but WTF?
They say they targeted current gen but couldnt run it, yet they have different devs working on the current gen version..

Im confused, so current gen WILL run it then, just Respawn couldnt do it themselves?

And Im sure this was a MS suprise thats been spoiled, somebody is getting fired.

This thread is going by too fast to keep up with every post. Can someone explain to me why people are so skeptical about the cloud stuff? Other than the precedent of lies surrounding SimCity, of course.

Cloud in this case in an MMO. That's literally it. It's using MMO technology from 15+ years ago.

Touting it as the power of the cloud is disingenuous. If it really was the cloud, why is this on 360 and PC? It's just using the internet the same way every single MMO/online game with AI does. It's not impressive and it's just buttering up the concept of the cloud.

Have you played an MMO before? Unless you're running in dial up you should be fine. The only problem is server stability and that's usually good except for launch week.

Information doesn't travel instantaneously.

Source-related question: Isn't HAMMER a fucking nightmare to use?

Wait, here's something weird-

"The Xbox One offers devs many more tools to use as well, such as player expression tracking, game recording, and updateable achievements. Many of these features are still in their infancy, so Respawn isn't sure how Titanfall will leverage them.

Do they mean facial tracking? As in Kinect is tracking emotions? Is this new?

its not new. its part of what made me angry in the first place.
why you think 3gb ram and 10% of system are not available to games?
because this shit

anyways, thank you chubigans, thank you cartman for the headsup, and FUCK digital download systems once more!! "MAGAZINE NOT AVAILABLE IN YOUR COUNTRY"

If Titanfall sounds good to you, don't sleep on Planetside 2 - game is dope as fuck and might just scratch the same itch. I'll be trying Titanfall for sure, but Planetside 2 is givin' me good times right now. Good times.

Doesn't the Source engine suffer from streaming issues, making it incompatible with open-world style game?

The current version of Source uses bsp files for levels which are really limited. Respawn probably wrote a new map system for larger scale environments and seamless transitions.

It being EA I'm surprised that they didn't use Frostbite (or even CryEngine) and licensed Source instead.

Perhaps Source (not ID tech based) was the only scalable engine that could achieve 60fps on 360 as well the Xbone.

yeahe this is so stupid. Since the 90s we have MMOs running on servers and now it´s just called "the cloud"...

PS4 Planetside2 or DC Universe use the power of "the cloud" too...
SOE should have put that in their new PS4 trailers.

DCUO and Planetside 2 launching on the PS4 with the infinite power of the cloud!

Ya, we used to call them servers. I'm glad MS renamed them.

Well, FWIW, the software industry has been referring to distributed processing as cloud processing or utilizing the cloud for 3 - 5 years. If MS is utilizing the Azure platform for this for something other than hosting games -- more along the distributed computing format -- then it's not a new thing in software, although it is a new thing in gaming.

MORE STUFF

A lot of the article has to do with Respawn's origins, actually.

So here's the exclusivity mention: They thought working on PS4, Xbox One and PC would prove too difficult for a small team, so they decided to focus on one console instead of two. (er...). "Not to say we won't [go multiplatform] in the future, but for our first game we wanted to focus on making the best game we could."

GI points how that the Xbox One has 5GB of GDDR3 ram available to devs, whereas PS4 has 8GB DDR5 ram, and asks if that's a problem for Respawn. He says they're having trouble even using the 5GB efficiently with all the new architecture tricks. (that is to say, even if they had 8GB they wouldn't know how to use it properly at this stage of development)

GI: "What XBox One lacks in RAM, it potentially makes up for in cloud computing." Talks about how the game will have unlimited dedicated servers for the game, offloading "a few dozen AI" and physics, says the game would be impossible without the cloud and wouldn't have attempted it. Still dealing with unfinished hardware and software, so it's "still a little rough going at times."

all the cloud talk sounds like it wont come to the ps4. atleast their first game.

Ya, we used to call them servers. I'm glad MS renamed them.

This is why a lot of the cloud computing heresy goes over my head. It's nothing more than a marketing gimmick.

I understand the future benefits of it, but we're not at any stage where someone can own a console for 20 years and enjoy the infinite energy of the cloud.

all the cloud talk sounds like it wont come to the ps4. atleast their first game.

Because Respawn will get up on the stage during Xbox One and talk incessantly about the improvements that are able to be produced in this game with the benefits of cloud computing on the server's end. Only possible on the Xbox One.

That's weird, check out this on the GI website.

Interesting that first confirmed xbone games are all 60 fps (Titanfall, PGR5, CODog) being the weakest next gen platform while KZ:S and Drive Club are 30 fps in the most powerful console.

The difference in IQ must be enormous.

What graphic property will be more appreciated by the players?

You're trying to use two multiplatform games as evidence of something? Call of Duty will also be on PS4, and running at 60fps.

Framerate is always just a matter of the dev team choosing to target that number. It says nothing about the hardware in general.

Yes, that's why the game is also coming to the 360 and PC.

Physics and AI server-side, pretty awesome, but I wonder how this would affect someone playing the game over 200ms, would that translate into a constant 200ms of latency/lag? Would be interesting to see what the universal cutoff for acceptable latencies are in the next gen.

Something like BF3 really danced well with 250ms, partly because it was server side, and the combat was slower, seems big team battles in general cope better with a slightly higher latency because of the game's actual speed.

If you destroy a Titan the particle effects will show after 2 sec?

This thread is going by too fast to keep up with every post. Can someone explain to me why people are so skeptical about the cloud stuff? Other than the precedent of lies surrounding SimCity, of course.

It's uses are limited. Not everything can be effectively offloaded to the cloud without introducing latency problems. Ergo, I am irritated with the PR speak surrounding the cloud. That said, there are things, like AI, which would theoretically still work with the cloud. My skepticism comes from the realities of varying Internet connections. While most of us may well have Internet connections, even ones that are pretty reliable, it's safe to say most people don't have blazing fast Internet, or have a connections that ebb and flow in quality. How much data is being sent back and forth? What happens to your game if your connection slows? What if you're in the middle of battle and you drop your connection for a minute or two? What happens to the AI routines in situations like that? Can the Xbone dynamically take over those calculations, or will the game seize up and tell you to fix the Internet?

I find this troubling, and maybe more frustrating, in a closed scenario like E3 we're unlikely to get answers. Even if you do get responses from devs, you won't get to see anything running in a real world set up. I'll be skeptical until I see it in action outside of a press environment.

Interesting that they decided to prolong firefights for causuals while games with traditionally longer fights like Halo try to reduce it to mimic COD. Not sure if it will work as more health / shields means that higher skilled players have more time to turn the tide of fights, this could actually dissuade the mass audience they are seeking.

I wonder if its part of the contract to mention "The power of the cloud" if you are making a game thats X1 exclusive (lets pretend like MS that PC gaming doesnt exist).

It begins...

Digital Foundry | In Theory: Can the Xbox One cloud transform next-gen gaming?

Long story short.

For local level dynamic (sensitive) load or rendering, not at all plausible.
For local level insensitive load, possible but not viable or ideal, due to added complexities and reliability.
For online gaming latency advantageous benefits via dedicated servers (more players, bigger maps etc), absolutely.

I think too many people wrap around the graphic advantages (or lack of) in cloud processing. What Cloud processing can bring tremendously to games is immersion. As I stated earlier, Cloud servers can calculate say a simulated "war" and just send the data to the X1 when a player is in LOS range of assets, and the X1 takes over.

This basically sounds like what this game is doing, running a "mock" war on the cloud that the players partake in.

It is true that SimCity did a mockery of the idea (and honestly didn't really build any cloud processing into the game, just stat tracking), but that doesn't make the concept invalid.

Wow MS now marketing xbone with COD:ghosts and TITANfall from the makers of COD.looks like no matter how many screw ups they make they will outsell ps4 this holiday

Lol! EA trying to pull the same crap they did with Simcity on consoles. Always online my ass.

Except always online in a multiplayer shooter with dedicated servers actually makes sense.

It will be interesting to see if MS' promises about universal dedicated servers are anywhere close to reality.

Game itself sounds promising, especially the "Attack on Titan" bits. First dibs on the handle Eren Mikasa.

Why the hell are you guys getting so hung up on marketing speak? Who gives a crap? This is a new game and it looks interesting.

The forums focus on how much the cloud is 'BS' is much more than its use in marketing. Get over it and talk about the damn game.

Source-related question: Isn't HAMMER a fucking nightmare to use?

Depends on what you're making. As a level editor, Hammer was fine... Especially if you had a background in Quake engine maps made with Worldcraft. I think that it's still difficult for level scripting.
