Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

Another shill bites the dust.

FordGTGuy

Which was the post that did it? You know, I've done my fair share of stuff, Kazifying etc, but this guy was "Only on Xbox" Avataring people without them even asking for it. At that point I wondered if it was more than just fandom.

Anyway, have any main media apart from Kotaku picked up on this yet?

Still can't stop laughing at "Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners."

Just think about how much would have to go into this with all the new bullshit drm and used game restrictions to even allow something like a red box to rent games. They machines would all have to be replaced to add in equipment be able to deactivate and reactivate the disc every time someone returned a disc otherwise someone could just rent the game and have a free copy on their hd at home. I'm pretty confident rental of games will never happen for Xbox One.

And if the PS4 doesn't, I don't see reviews going "Hey these games are identical on both systems but you can't lend it to your friends on Xbox so don't buy it!" in every review.

They will say the PS4 version is superior graphically though as every multiplatform game will run better on PS4.

The 50-60 NEW games I bought this gen

2 consoles

150ish downloadable titles.

MS isn't seeing ONE FUCKING CENT of this money next gen.

Craziest thing about the 24-hour checkin is the thought that in 20 years, or whenever Microsoft's servers go down, the console will just straight-up no longer play video games.

20 years? Are you kidding me. This is the ultimate "no back compat" machine. When the Xbox 2 comes out the Xbone servers get shut down.

Hello fellow video gamers. Are you not excited for Microsoft's® XBOX ONE™ video game console? I know I cannot wait for the next installment in Activision's® Call of Duty™ series, Call of Duty Ghosts™. It will also be good to play on XBOX LIVE™ with friends. I cannot wait for the new Kinect™ sensor. Halo®™ is also going to be good.

Isn't it sad that I actually have to preface that this is a parody and I don't feel this way at all?

24 hour online check is the biggest bummer to me. Everything else I could live with, I hate the idea of no used games but I'd combat that by waiting for a sale or the bargain bin for every single game I bought. But I can't justify the 24 hour check, there'd be no way around it. You're being treated like a criminal, only allowed permission to play the games you've bought if MS decides it's OK. For all the comparisons to Steam I've been seeing for weeks, this is a thousand times worse than Steam which at least has the common decency of an offline mode.

While i do not support in any way the block of used games on principle, i haven't bought a used game in years, so that isn't affecting me personally.

But the 24 hours check it's just insanely absurd and it's actually something that bothers me on multiple levels, and the real deal breaker for me, too.

Side Note: Steam has an online check too, but it's set to 30 days.

The 'friends and family can play anywhere' sounds confusing. Surely they wont actually be playing directly from the cloud, so will it have to install each game?

assuming you have to register friends but this would be good if it was like PS3 game sharing. I could split the cost of new games between friends depending how good the experience is for everyone

You really think they went through all this to let people easily share games like the PS3? There will be some heavy restrictions on this you can bank on that. For starters they already said only 1 person can play at a time. I am sure it will be part of a new family gold where if your idiot friend/family member is banned all games gone for everyone.

A small trade in for the infinite power of the cloud.

Fake edit: Holy shit, my gif was totally ignored *sad panda*

Further to that craziness is that prior to the Orth affair, they were planning on actually having the thing need to be connected 24/7 for any game to function. This is the toned down version.

none of this bothers me. my internet works, i never plan to buy a disc again so long a digital downloads are available, and my friends can buy their own shit.

and Kinect can listen all it wants. I aint ashamed or paranoid.

I wish i gave no fucks but sadly i do :(

In two weeks' time, we may look on this as one of the smartest posts of all time. But for now? It's a bit optimistic.

20 years lol, more like 6.

I don't trust M$ with ANYTHING now, seriously how bad of a fuck up can you do. This is just terrible.

It's funny. I pride myself in being platform agnostic these days. But this it is just fascinating, watching Microsoft dissolve over a decade of goodwill in the span of a few weeks. It's like the most brilliant meta game ever conceived in the making.

It's called Harrison Disease and fake Kaz was all along right.

Microsoft should have just come out and said "hey fuckers, we're going all digital distribution now, suck it!"; it would have a horrible stigma attached to it, but at least would have been clear and easy for consumers to understand.

Instead they're in this confusing limbo transition area between physical retail and digital distribution while none of their customers will be reaping the benefits that either provide.

This is GAF and we're all not even totally sure how to decipher this bullshit here; your average consumer is going to have no idea how any of this works and what their limitations are before they invest in this console, is that some kind of business strategy I don't know about?

I believe that if Microsoft had done that, there would be far less backlash, depending of course on the cost of the games.

Know what's even easier? Not buying it in the first place.

Then don't buy it? I'm just saying that "an always connected Kinect" in itself is a fairly lame quality to consider an insulting deficiency. Not liking Kinect styled gaming, and being forced to pay for it as a pack in on top of that are legitimate concerns, but not Kinect having to be connected IMO.

I guess MS done the math and concluded money from sales outweighs losing those who trade and buy used or do not connect to the internet.

Probably.
But they didn't think of this reaction. We can spread this information everywhere, make people at least think... and the best case is, we can hurt MS enough to force them to reconsider.

Seriously, anyone with an ounce of concern over their privacy should look at this and take particular note of slide 4 where it shows Microsoft becoming the first company to join the NSA's PRISM program to collect data on users. This is definitely one of the more troubling things I have ever seen to have it laid out so plainly.

If you doubt your privacy because of Kinect 2.0 and its always-on policy, PLEASE READ THIS and RECONSIDER YOUR PURCHASE.

Did you attempt to engage him? I did.

Oh. Boy.

Guys, there's no fucking way MS is going to let 1 game be shared between a group of 10 people. There has to be some sort of catch there. These policies show they want $$$$$$$$ and letting 10 friends share one game would kill sales. Even if only 1 of the 10 is able to play at a time. Can't see this happening.
Only you and another one of the 10 "family members" can access the games at the same time. Also, for those non-owners, the system requires an internet connection every hour instead of 24 hours.

Or when you type something in your profile that gets you banned or snap at some 12 year old on XBL. Bye bye gameys.

Or they lie about it. I can see major griefing and trolling with this system. Get a few people to lie another person said N word over and over. Get him banned and he loses all his games with no recourse. This is going to back fire.

Could someone make an "Adam Orth: A Look Back" thread? I'd find it really interesting to see what folks think of the guy now when he was just saying essentially what Microsoft has said in a more formal tone. Do people still think he got what he deserved?

IN 20 YEARS?

Are you shitting me? This will happen in 5 years when they will decide to sell you a new machine.

Great, I couldn't disagree more especially in light of PRISM but to each his own.

Tbh, this doesn't scare me at all. Guess it affects some more than others, because I'm not quite outraged.

"I don't mind my consumer rights being taken away one gen at a time."

On another note, Angry Joe was recording his rant when he actually got so mad his spit hit the lens and has to re-record it all, lmao.

Fucking wow.

They really could have branded this communication better.
Something like:

What is the maximum number of days my console can be offline before it refuses to play all my games?
ONE.

How many people in my family can play my games at the same time as me?
ONE.

If a publisher allows it, how many times can a game be given to somebody else?
ONE.

How many months does someone have to be on my Friends list before I could give them a game?
ONE.

Xbox ONE.

I reposted the flyer and a call to arms in the main thread. Please join us if you'd like to help save our hobby.

Man, the DIVX parallels are really starting to pile up.

Here's the whole conversation

I hope I don't come off as a MS employee and get banned for this.
