Giantbomb says EA, Ubisoft & Activision are the ones pushing for used games DRM

Publishers want this. Microsoft (and likely Sony) are allowing this. It's easy to push the blame back and forth, but at the end of the day, it's still mega corporation invalidating the 1st Right of Sale.

For the guys saying Sony might have a similar system because of 3rd party, how would you do that without some kind of online interaction?

Couldn't the individual game itself require an internet connection the first time you boot it up to check to see if you "own" it? The system doesn't require an internet connection.

As always; The console market belatedly borrows from the pc market. All the really stupid shit these companies tried with DRM on PC has come to a head on consoles. Let's see if console consumers hate it as much.

Well they can all fuck right off. EA and Activision make shit games anyway (haven't bought a game they've published since Dead Space) but it will be a little harder boycotting Ubisoft. At least they publish one or two interesting games every now and then.

Well, it was bound to happen eventually, and I'm not surprised to see them wanting this.

Only way to combat this issue is by speaking with our wallets, but I think we all know that wont happen.

Yeah, we don't need online passes.

We'll just kill used game entirely.

Sounds like EA to me. Then they wonder why they are voted "Worst Company"

Of course, Ubi should be right down there too!

ps4 drm confirmed

This. Yoshida saying they'd leave it up to publishers + this revelation? PS4 is going to have DRM, just not system based like the Xbox One. That way Sony has the convenient excuse that THEY'RE not the ones blocked used games.

When the biggest publishers want something the big three pretty much have to obey.

Unfortunately this will probably be embraced with open arms. The publishers are betting that console gamers are like junkies and they'll accept anything to get their fill.

I don't entirely feel that using common sense to see what's going on can be attributed to Giant Bomb. No matter how much I love Giant Bomb. It's obvious and it's been happening for a long time.

I'll call bullshit on this. I'm sure the publishers are pushing for used games drm but Sony and Microsoft are giant publishers as well and they get a cut of all new games sold. I'm very skeptical of this narrative giantbomb has pushing about Sony & Microsoft caving to publisher pressure. They stand to benefit more than anyone

No shit, PS3(or any other console with external interfaces) "has" DRM too if the publishers build a phone-home into their game. Sony provides an ethernet port and gives games access to it.

This is a giant game of chicken between Sony/Microsoft and the major publishers. Microsoft is the first to swerve.

Right. If they wouldn't have benefitted, they wouldn't have done it.

If true and Sony doesn't follow suit, XB1 confirmed to be the third party console of choice. I mean even Gamestop is pushing this thing hard. There is a major change coming to the industry and MS is leading the charge with XB1. Its gonna be either roll with them or get rolled over. I don't like it one bit but the writing is on the wall.

If EA, Ubi and Activision storng arm/force Sony into doing this too, then, this will be my reaction when the next crash happens:

picture-planetoftheapes_hell2.jpg

I guess we can still ride it out like those Europeans who had Amiga's and Commodore's in the 1980s after the crash here in the U.S. We'll just probably end up like those weird old unlces you had that had CB radio workshops in their garages with our PC's and Steam accounts while all our nieces and nephews play games on their phones and iPads.

I wouldn't be surprised if EA tried to persuade Nintendo into a restrictive DRM solution on Wii U, and when Nintendo said "no", EA dropped Nintendo like a rock.

It's just a theory, however it makes a lot of sense given this kind of news.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised with the way the entire gaming climate is changing, that Nintendo is forced to reset and release an entirely new console that supports some type of DRM. They are getting shunned like the plague by third parties right now. It has to be a serious reason why.

Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony should go pro consumer and tell them to fuck off with the DRM shit. They wouldn't really have a choice if that were the case.

One can dream.

So why is UBIsoft giving the WiiU so much support?

It could be any number of things:

- Nintendo gave them a sweet deal.

- They believe by putting a solid effort into supporting the WiiU they'll gain more control over the platform. Users who buy Nintendo systems primarily for Nintendo games will now buy them for Ubisoft games as well. This gives Ubisoft more leverage when dealing with Nintendo. BTW, things like this is probably one of the reasons why Nintendo doesn't have the best of relationships with third parties.

- Supporting Nintendo can be used as leverage against Microsoft & Sony.

- Production values are such that they don't believe they can leave any money on the table.

- They already have a few titles that connect fairly well with Nintendo's audience.

Or they could just tell the publishers to screw off, what are they gonna do go PC exclusive? Of course the big three can't really afford to call the bluff of these publishers for the fear of losing those titles.

Now we wait for the Sony conference to see where they side.

I find that amusing, considering MS was planning on implementing this tech before they even shared it with third parties

So what happens if Sony doesn't play nice?

Right? I say Sony should stick to their no DRM guns and focus on obliterating MS in console sales. EA wants to keep FIFA and Battlefield on Xbone initially? Let'em. It won't be forever if Sony is dominating the market. You can't make bajillions in sales if you only release a title on a system with an inferior install base.

Don't get your hopes up. Sony doesn't have the balls to do something like this. Remember, Kaz Hirai is charged with fixing an ailing company, and pissing off all the major publishers by rejecting their DRM scehemes is only going to hurt the PS4.

Hardware advantage means nothing when the big pubs have you by the balls and are throwing your competitor year long timed exclusives, exclusive DLC, sales, etc...

Well I already have a standing EA boycott. I don't buy Activision games. It won't be hard to refrain from buying Ubi games either.

Destiny will be a problem. I may have to make an exception there.

Sony is going to have to do the same thing or it's over folks. If I were a dev why in the world would I put a game on the PS4 if the Xbone is doing this? Deal with it.

If Sony announces some sort of DRM implementation, this is going to get ugly.

I will stick with my Wii U for a few years then and buy a PS4/XB1 whenever they are priced decently and have games for cheap.

Does anyone else feel like this could be enough to destroy the console market and make this the last generation?

Now I don't think it is likely but it is definitely entering the realm of possibility with bullshit like this.

It just seems so ridiculously short-sighted. I wonder how some of the bigger Japanese publishers will react. I mean like 90% of the arguments from the defenders revolve around how shitty Gamestop is and how they won't miss them.

However, Gamestop is just one (very big chain) in a very big world. The used game market in Japan for example is a completely different beast and I can't imagine what would happen if they tried to kill it off....

This is all a game of chicken. Excusee while I yell:

DEAR SONY CALL THESE GUYS ON THEIR BLUFF!!! SCREW ALL THIS NOISE, SELL MILLIONS OF CONSOLES, AND WATCH THEM COME CRAWLING BACK.

It will be fascinating (and possibly excruciating) to see how this plays out, especially with regards to how Sony handle things from here. The one thing I am absolutely sure of is that Sony aren't going to tell any of these publishers to go jump off a bridge in the name of "consumer rights".
