Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

One thing I keep thinking about, people are mad at MS for doing this. Yet the game publishers are pushing for it, and is getting MS to do this.

I'm surprised people aren't more up in arms with publishers. Example EA must be a huge pusher of this seeing how they just quit with the online pass to make people happy bullshit.

Who is the greedy one in this? MS probably is going to get a lot of backers making games because they sided with them against consumers. It's the whole control of media from CD's to MP3's, movies, everything. How many times did the media companies pressure MS in the whole divx and DVD era, etc.

MS is in it because they resent not getting any revenue from used games, not because of pressure. That will become more clear when Sony doesn't have this DRM authentication.

And DIVX was dreamed up by entertainment lawyers, not studios.

Question : Can you run the games from the Hard-Drive on XBOX 360?

No, you can't right? You need the DISC.

Why couldn't they just do the same this time, huh?

Please, anyone?

Because 360 made a distinction between physical and digital games. Like Steam, the One treats them as one (lol) and the same.

They were planning on doing this before publishers got involved apparently.

I cannot wait until someone hacks MS's authentication servers and has fun with it

You know it's going to happen

It's sad though as I cannot imagine the PS4 won't have similar

You're talking out your ass because I proved you wrong. GOG.com is a perfect example of a website that doesn't use DRM and yet still has fantastic sales. Modern games included. There is no connection between sales and DRM.
This is a strawman argument about GoG having good sales, especially since I wasn't stating DRM caused the sales. What I and others pointed out is when Steam came into being and started doing all these sales (which are done with publisher discounts, not 100% by Valve), piracy started to decrease. Steam having a good DRM just showed the consumer accepted it and most likely helped Steam convince publishers to give good discounts in the BEGGINING. GoG.com came after Steam and does good sales as a COMPETITOR with Steam and others; having no DRM or Steam having DRM doesn't come into play with this argument.

The way things work right now on 360 and PS3 would be just fine for me, thanks.

Except this is clearly the result of MS and Sony both wanting to go full digital with their consoles but with the obvious issue of physical media still being popular with their customer base.

With a full digital distribution model most of these hoops could be ignored since you wouldn't own a physical disc. This is the end-result of a weird in-between world where you are physically buying a digital copy via a disc.

Considering how stupidly anti-consumer the Xbox One is, I wouldn't be surprised by any further bad news.

Defenders: "Look, Microsoft simply doesn't want your money if you want to play the game past two years."

I don't like dealing in hyperbole. If MS cut the servers off in 8 years or so, we'll that's bad. I'm not going to just assume its going to happen and then use it as an argument.

Not supporting this.

Fuck you, Microsoft. I'm absolutely fucking amazed that Nintendo's shitty online system has turned out far more favourable than what Microsoft can shit out. I'm flabbergasted.

If Sony continue with the same as Microsoft, then It's over for me. PC and Nintendo only from now on. Congratulations, Microsoft - you're destroying the hobby I've loved for twenty years. Burn in hell.

Yeah. Free DLC for a lot of small bullshit that is sold right now. Customization features, weapon packs, content like extra missions and/or further reasons to replay.

Premium expansions would be your meaty stuff. Whole new campaigns, large new environments, new characters and classes etc.

Borderlands and Skyrim and GTA4 are the closest to what I'm talking about, if they had more free DLC. Borderlands in particular does a good amount right since they have added quite a few reasons to replay the game, while also adding new content. I'd just argue for more free content along with premium. Free DLC provides incentive to go online with a game and hold on to it, if more can be expected down the line.
The problem I see with that is that people will complain why the premium DLC wasn't in the game in the first place. It works for a game that is already filled with content to the brim like Skyrim or Gta, but what about a Heavy Rain? And free DLC would probably be quite expensive since they always have to have mo-cap sessions etc. And I don't know what a Heavy Rain with user generated content would supposed to look like either.

Hey, publishers are the anonymous ones. MS is the one telling them not to fuck off. MS needs to take the shit for this because they're the ones implementing it. No 'I was only following orders' bullshit here.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

they've killed used game sales in one hit and this shouldn't ever be read any differently by anyone.

MS should have called it XBOX Online. At least the branding would then make sense and they could market the product.

But then they wouldn't be able to trick some poor unsuspecting casual purchasing the XBONE who doesn't realize he's being subjected to mounds of arbitrary DRM being pushed down his throat.

because having to put discs in to authenticate your game blows. I want to play my entire library whenever I want without having to dig up a disc

you have had the option for digital for 8 years don't need this DRM for that.

Be great if someone could tally up the dead :)

This guy did

Time heals all, even this anal fissure.

You're part of the problem.

He's referring to soldiers overseas.

Didn't they already say previously that they'd come up with some exception system for soldiers overseas and other special cases? Sometime of special activation code etc.?

I seem to recall some statement about that after the reveal conference.

So I can only resell my games at Gamestop, Bestbuy etc? I don't mind that much considering they usually have trade 2 deals or so. Here in Canada Futureshop tends to even have Trade 1 game for $40. If they just gave us the option for resale (since I like to purchase games from other people rather than retail) I'd be happier. This news is meh... and wow this thread is moving almost as fast as a press conference thread lol.

Lol is there any other industry that restricts where you can resell it's products? I'm hoping game prices come down as in $30-$40 otherwise this is the last console generation. What if I have a gameshop near by that isn't a participating retailer for trade ins? Why are people being punished for supporting the industry?

Wait how has Steam been able to get away with that then? There are games released on Steam that aren't available in store, and the added function of not being able to re-sell or gift used games.

I'd say that because no one has challenged them over it in court?

Do some searching and you'll find numerous examples of Valve/Steam giving refunds for various scenarios as a "favour" to the user; because they know damn well that if they refused they are breaking your consumer rights (Faulty goods; 7 day cooling off period for digital transctions etc, applies to AU/UK et al) They don't admit that, hence the "favour"

Like with Steam purchases... you are offered a game for sale; you purchase the game, and you are supplied with an invoice for the sale/purchase of said game. At no point in that transaction are you signing any kind of lease agreement.

If Steam ever tried to take your game library away; offer to take them to small claims court in your local state; it wouldn't last pissing time.

Not only soldiers but a lot of my friends work on oil fields of northern Alberta. A lot of time they don't have reliable internet for weeks on end

because having to put discs in to authenticate your game blows. I want to play my entire library whenever I want without having to dig up a disc

Really? then buy all digital and let them leave my physical discs alone. I take it you buy everything digital and you love it. Great for you. But I like my physical games to truly own them, not borrow them from a publisher and play it with their "permission".

I don't know, MS isn't stupid and has lots of experience running services for businesses as well. Sony was the one that got hacked, but I'm sure MS was a large target all gen as well.

omg that would be one of the biggest clusterfucks in gaming history

When iPhone launched servers were overloaded and people couldn't activate their phone (done through iTunes) for days. It was crazy.

It's weird to think in the future, single player games could be unplayable due to server maintenance.

According to a supposed insider, yup.

Microsoft designed the XBONE around cloud connectivity and always-online.

For them, always-online is the future of gaming. Riding through all the ire towards it is just a "necessary step" in the evolution of video games. To Microsoft, we're nothing more than a bump in the road.

Yeah, but that system doesn't require live.

Of all the companies in the world, MS is pretty well equipped to host servers for a considerable length of time. I find "can I play this game in 20 years" arguments somewhat silly. I can't even fathom playing my SNES today. It wouldn't even hook up to my tv I don't think.

Microsoft doesn't support Windows XP only 12 years later, and they sold half a billion copies of that. What makes you think they'll support this console for decades?

So, hang on, what happens when you reside in a country where the "participating retail partners" do not exist?

And I am pretty sure that not allowing private reselling of products you purchased is against the law in my country and pretty much in the whole European Union.

I was speaking to my local Gamestop manager this week and he informed me that Gamestop is currently trying to figure out what to do with Xbox One. That Microsoft might be incentivising GS somehow with the extra overhead of selling used games at a higher cost to the customer and effectively reducing used game sales. I'm not sure how true this is but he stated that GS and MS are currently in negotiations on repercussions of DRM and that GS was largely unaware of this move by Microsoft. He went on to say that over 50% of the overall 360 game sales came from GS and that Microsoft could be shooting themselves in the foot from a retailer perspective, and implied that it is very possible that Xbox One will get less floor space than the WiiU and GS will not promote the console nor hold midnight releases for xbox exclusives. Either way it sounds like the relationship is somewhat strained.

Xbox: Cloud would have been fitting. Internet often gets represented by a cloud.
They could have even licensed a good mascot.

We've never seen the COD crowd jump to new hardware. Who's to say where they'll go, or if they'll even bother upgrading? Why jump to the One when the games keep coming out for 360?

The LIVE infrastructure is just like making an analogy to the network of Apple, Google, or Facebook. Once you start to build up contacts, titles, memories, etc... on one, you start to get vested as a consumer. PSN is the same now for those vested in it.

Those networks are by design to keep people within that network by playing off consumer psyche. I just used the COD crowd since it is the largest I believe. And the people will transition to new tech easier then you think. Just look how people line up and purchases new tablets, phones, gadgets, etc... that get appropriate marketing. Some may not be "day 1" but the transition to the 360 to X1 and PS3 to PS4 will be quicker then you think, unless the price is WAY outside the market segment.

May not believe me but I'm just stating this as someone who has experience in corporate finance and marketing with consumers (not with games, but it doesn't matter as consumer habits scale across industries).

Nahh, I'm sure retailers will pay big fees to become "XBox One Authorized Trade Centers" and then the cost of those fees will be passed on to us in one form or another.

Hurray next gen!
