Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

10 can have it installed but only 2 can play the same game at the same time.

Yeah, but the retailer will have to buy into Microsoft's Azure computer system to set this up and pay all the relevant licensing fees every time a trade/sale is made. That's quite a large barrier of entry to an independent retailer.

So 2 can play the same game on a different console at the same time?

this is not a defense of microsoft but rather a criticism of a ridiculous argument

if your internet is regularly out for 24+ hour increments, then you have far larger problems than not being able to play your xbox in this hyper-connected day and age

a broadband connection is practically mandatory in the 21st century.
What if I go on vacation to a remote place my parents own where A:there is no broadband and B:even if there were we do not wish to subscribe for the 3 or 4 weeks per year we are there. What if I take my console with me for raining days ?
This is not an hypothetical scenario btw.

I still want one. these policies do not effect me in the slightest. I don't sell games, xbox is always online for me so it's fine for me.

day 1 for this and the ps4 as well. I'm in it for the games, not the politics.

What happens if Xbox live gets hacked like psn and you can't play your games for 7 days?

You miss the point here. It doesn't affect you today, but a few years from now they might just change something that affects you greatly, and by then it's too late. None of this affects me either, but in the long view this is just a very bad direction for the industry to be headed.

Maybe, but I buy the product to use today, it's not an investment into the distant future where I worry about whether it's going to be future proof or not. when the next iteration comes out I'll get that too.

there is no opportunity cost for me, I want both next gen systems. no point in protesting or wasting my time complaining about the businesses or politics when I can just play games.

Must be. I can't wait for their event. I hope if they don't have embarrassing internal guys cheering again, I hope there's no cheers, and maybe even boos. Though I do imagine that their new tactic is to try and paint all of this one way, so I do imagine people who were working on this awful platform will be the only fools cheering for it.

The tactic is simple. They got all this nonsense out of the way now so when the day comes they only have to show the positive parts when it's streamed on the net and featured on TV. Nobody will know the stipulations to purchasing this console. The people are just going to see "the games".

That part about playing it at others houses is interesting. You have to install/download the game first, so who knows how long this will take, especially the downloading part. The days of taking rockband, buzz, etc to your friend's house to have fun is pretty much being killed off by this.

So if Sony pulls similar, you'll buy neither console? really?

I can't see it to be honest. A game will come out that sets the gaming world on fire and most of us won't be able to resist. The bullshit they are pulling will become less and less important to all of us rapidly degrading everytime a 'last of us' is released and scores 10s across the board.

This is the new normal. What is really terrible is they just could have avoided this by allowing you to play from disc and only from disc if they wanted. Just push digital sales and they would have what they wanted.
Why do you want Sony to be doing this too? You're so adamant that this be the case, and even doubt peoples word on what they would do in that case..every time I see that cat with a fish in its mouth i know you're hitting someone with that same old "what if sony" -__-

I really hope this decision has consequences for them.
I can see a lot of fuss at the start and then everyone swallows the pill and lives with this shit.

If this happens everyone may follow this path and this will be really sad...

If Sony does turn out to have a similar kind of system, I'm going to be honest right now and say I'd still be interested in PS4. If you notice on their weekly store updates, they have sales and price drops constantly and they are constantly viewable. Oftentimes they price match sales that 360 has, like in April during the Spring sale they matched Hell Yeah!'s $5.99. Borderlands 2 was $25 after Microsoft did $30 a few weeks prior. They come up with their own sales and its more varied than when 360 does like a Publisher Sale for one publisher. Tomb Raider was $30 for one weekend and I think they later kept it on for the whole week. I bought like 5 full games in April off of PSN. Terraria was the only one that wasn't savings get.

Think about CrossBuy, obvi Microsoft doesnt have a handheld but i mean Skulls of the Shogun was on Windows Phone... They could've done something. It just to me feels like Sony is more attentive with savings in general and in they way they advertise them each week. You can't say PlaystationPlus isn't deal after deal, and they pass those deals to normal PSN users as best they can. No Gold Member only debauchery like with Dark Souls on XBL. Even the $5 off they give for Playstation exclusive digital downloads is a nice gesture. They really didn't have to do that. They even had a slight preorder discount for Grid II although it was miniature, it showed they at least grasped the concept. The features for Plus shows they know how to run a digital store, obvi it needs a few more features here and there.

So, if push comes to shove and I can't rent on PS4 either, I'd still be interested in what their new store would be like and how they choose to repurpose PlaystationPlus. In my eyes Sony is in a different league then Microsoft with sales value. At least with them I know I'll still be getting savings on something, at a somewhat frequent pace.

Or at least, that's how I'll justify bending over this Holiday.

This is not an hypothetical scenario btw.

Not defending MS in the slightest, but the last thing I want to do on vacation is stuff I do at home all the time like play games.

But I guess it's different if stuck on a family vacation at a cabin or something lame vs. going to other countries, or national parks etc. like my planned vacations.

Yup, so long holiday gaming.

My brother and I played so much xbox over Christmases at my grandparents place. I doubt they even know what internet is.

My belief is that none of these things are going to be mentioned by Microsoft at E3 at all.

They're broadcasting this now so that it's not something they have to cover during their conference, up on stage. It seems pretty obvious to me that none of these things have any benefit to customers and can only ever affect them negatively. To be clear: it's never gonna be a good thing, but it can certainly be a bad thing.

I'm sure Microsoft will try their damndest to stay as far away from this news as possible. E3 will try and be all about the games for them, literally - they don't want to talk about the Xbox One, they wanna talk about the games.

Means, no selling on craiglist. Being stuck with Gamestop offering you very low $ for you used game.

I imagine Gamestop will start offering even less for Xbox One games than they do for current-gen stuff since alternatives like ebay/craigslist are no longer an option, especially in areas where there are few if any other "participating retailers" to trade-in to. Your only choices become take whatever GS will give you or don't sell it at all.

I don't get it, isn't Gamestop etc the main reason they're limiting used games sales? Because they promote used games more than new games etc? These are the ones who keep being portrayed as evil in threads justifying this, not the small stores.

So solution to this is to ONLY allow Gamestop etc to sell used games, and not the small stores?

Wut?

The problem from the publishers' point of view isn't that Gamestop sells a lot of used games, but that they don't get a cut of all those used game sales. The whole "participating retailer" thing makes me think it'll be set up so that the retailer has to agree to pay something to the publisher in order to be able to do whatever kind of lincense transfer is required.

People saying they don't care because it won't effect them are fucking us over as well.
Guess what I didn't buy Sim city, so who gives a shit if those consumers get fucked.
I don't think some people realize just how fucking air tight the entire infrastructure of this has to be AT ALL TIMES. Can anyone here who works with computers or server systems think of a SINGLE system that air tight and perfect all the time? Hell no. Christ on his throne can you even imagine if the ps3 had anything like this when PSN was down?

You can have whatever opinion you want, but anyone tripping over their own tongue to convince the rest of us that this is good idea can fuck off.

I will miss next gen Halo...it makes me sad. But I can't possibly justify purchasing this console.

Microsoft can change my mind only if they ditch the mandatory telescreen that requires internet. If it weren't for that I could have still possibly been interested, inspite of the DRM, if the games were killer appy enough.

Make us proud, Sony.

Well the worldwide figures show 360 more or less even with PS3, though once the US is removed the PS3 is ahead a bit, but not massively ahead.

Probably more interesting is internet connected consoles in terms of the regions. For 360 I thought that was 60-odd percent.

Thanks. Interesting.

Seems quite US centric; and where this would fly.

It's not about future proofing, it's about the consumer driving the industry and not the other way around. It's kind of like getting free healthcare from the government and then get pissed at them when they dictate to you how you are going to receive it. By that time, the ship has already sailed.

I understand you point about just caring about the games, but I'm telling you now, in the not too distant future, they are going to make changes to the system that you are going to hate, and it will be too late by then.

Man these policies just seem so tedious. And it's all for what? Stopping piracy? To block used games? Apparently it's worth it to them if it means screwing the consumer. I don't want all these regulations when I'm playing my game.

ms should fire everyone who worked with this new console

just right now

poor Adam Orth he was right

we should do a campaign in favour of him

Someone did bring up a great point. Both console makers have released info on how many consoles were sold and how many were actually brought online. Maybe with ps3 you have people that bought it solely as a BRD player..maybe? It's not even fucking close, and now they want to either force those people online or force them out.

This is a very niche corner case. Let's not pretend it's common or a prominent use case. I don't doubt some people do it, and it certainly sucks for them, but I don't think that angle is of high concern.

Maybe, but I buy the product to use today, it's not an investment into the distant future where I worry about whether it's going to be future proof or not. when the next iteration comes out I'll get that too.

I care about using it today, but also tomorrow. Nobody ever buys a product like this for using it just for today.

Then it's going to be up to those informed to spread the "hidden truth" about this platform. They can paint it all roses and spruce it up with perfume, but you and I know that the Xbox One is literally a massive, underpowered turd, with awful policies and ideas in nearly every single facet of the machine.

ah, i see what you're saying...being honest here, yeah there's stuff i'm gonna want. if sony sticks to offline play, but allows pubs to block resale of games, i'll be no happier than i was with losing BC but likely still bite at the right price/software (and god knows if that feels like philosophical compromise, ill pick one up used in the buy/sell thread haha).

now if sony and MS both released what we saw today...shit man, i'd have to do some real soul-searching here. ive got tons of handheld/PC/retro things going so it certainly wouldn't be hard during drought year 1, but past that? in the interest of full honesty here lemme know say something i can't own down the road.

No? From the text I get the sense that any retailer can participate if they want. The OP construed the word "participating" into some negative, selective process but I don't see anything in the document that implies that.

Further, just because you can doesn't mean you will be authorised/accepted. I can become a 3rd part reseller to say, Oracle or SAP selling their products. Doesn't mean they will have me as a channel partner.

There's no point wondering about "what ifs" until they happen.
Yes there is. It's called forethought and it's important. Not thinking of talking about any downside until it's already happening it a terrible idea. In fact, it sounds like Mircosoft's philosophy for building this thing.

Honestly the only reason the no used game thing bothers me is because how future proof is this system? In 10 years when there's a new system out will I still be able to play my old games? Also will these games always be available digitally? I love playing old games from time to time and not being able to do this seems tragic. I guess emulators?

after this the ONLY reason to buy an xbox one would be if the OS of the ps4 is a total bullshit and dosnt have any of the thigns of the xbone

but this will never happen

MS as a big xbox brand supporter....im saying ...you have failed hard this time

Ultimately I think the best case scenario we will get from Sony is no requirement to be online, no online DRM, some sort of used game restriction that is left to the publisher. Essentially, everything is the same as it is today expect publishers can impose a used game restriction. That's as good as it can get for Sony imo, which is a whole lot better than MS. I don't like intrusive DRM, simple as that so I'm hoping Sony does not go this route.

I am concerned about the future prospects of my potential investments on the Xbox One as a platform.
I put in money today, just to have their policy revised and the servers being switched off sometime in the future.

And given the money mongering attitude of guys such as EA, God only knows what they will up to.

I am out as a consumer from the MS ecosystem. If Sony does it , out from there as well.

Microsoft just killed Lan parties...

If Sony follows then I walk away from console gaming this gen.

Wow, just gave this even deper though, man. why?
EVO tournament shit storms all over the place, console locked games, Lan problems, profile DLC ,just messy.

Welp Microsoft just loves pissing people off. First dumbass hybrid called Windows 8 and now the restrictive XBone.

Ball is in Sony's court now, I either stick with a PS4 or ditch console gaming for this gen and continue playing LoL on PC

Does your phone have wifi hotspot?

Seriously... People are asking this? He shouldn't have to fucking go put of his way to connect a draconian console to the Internet.. Sweet mother of god, people are literally bending over to MS and allowing themselves to get screwed over,,,

Basically. 1.5mps connection, in Australia, is like... lucky.

Internet connection is the least of the worry here. I know for a fact that trading and used games are BIG in Asia. BIG. This isn't some "Shot yourself in the foot" scenario but damn has it turned out to be pretty close.

If this is for "selected stores" then I don't expect them to even carry Xbone in stores. They won't because there are no store chains that I am aware of in Asia. I am aware of A LOT of independent mom/pop stores that make their living from it, and they will simply stop supplying it, depending on how restrictive Microsoft's policies are for stores to make that trade.

The fact that only selected retails can trade means all the mom and pop stores that are SO BIG in other parts of the world will simply stop giving a fuck about Xbone. When they stop giving a fuck about Xbone, it means that gamers will have to stop giving a fuck about it whether they like it or not. It's because they will have a hard time finding Xbone games. I've seen these stores openly carry pirated PC games because no gamer can afford new games, and I've seen these stores make their console living via trades.

Good luck, Microsoft. Good luck convincing them that their retail infrastructure is not shit for these trade-ins, because it is. It is because there is no infrastructure for them in other parts of the world.

Internet connection is the last thing preventing them from buying or playing games. The fact that it can't even be traded without Microsoft's approval means it will not pick up. Which is fine because Microsoft is focusing on North American market.

They could and can do that today. Called online passes
