Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

It is blindingly obvious that none of these, uh, "features", transfer any benefit to the consumer; if they did Microsoft would not cancel roundtables, one-on-one interviews and spend months avoiding questions. They're releasing it now so at their E3 conference with millions of people watching, including the mainstream press, they can show shiny games and the mind share of the non-hardcore then becomes "this thing is the one item in my living room AND it plays awesome games! Amazing!" If they mentioned any of this draconian bullshit on stage they'd be torn to shreds.

I think that's it precisely. Sweep it under the rug now before E3. They don't want to make a spectacle of it because, as you pointed out, there are no benefits to this system.

Microsoft had no problem with taking down the Xbox Live servers for the original Xbox once the 360 had been out for a few years. It might be longer for the Xbox One since the servers are required for even single-player games to function, but my guess is at some point MS will decide that the money spent maintaining the servers isn't it worth it to support 10 or 20 year old games.

Yeah this is extremely tragic. Games aren't throwaway items. I want them to last.

I still don't understand.
Let's say, in 10 years or so, MS decides to shut down the Xbone servers forever or drops out of console market. Does this mean that all the games you bought are pretty much useless then? can you even play them in that situation?

Most likely when Microsoft decides to shut down servers, they'll release a patch which will lift the online requirements.

One would hope so, at least.

No, you have 24 hours left in that case. After that they are useless. ;-)

not sure if anyone on GAF really follows Blunty but it seems he's taken the same path as Total Biscuit

new video he just put up where he pretty much sides with Microsoft and insults those who disagree with him

what is with some these bigger name (sorta?) youtube gaming personalities siding with Microsoft on this crap?

TB only agreed with the used games part I think, which is a position that's understandable i.e Gamestop really just doesn't deserve the money they get from the used games etc.

I don't agree with that personally due to various factors already talked about around here at great lengths, but I can see where it's coming from.

I wonder if you can instruct the Xbox to make the check at a specific time, say 4AM. So the case you've stated above would be fixed.

I assumed that the last time Xbox *checked* was literally the last second you were online. So this would be more of an issue if you've had it off for a day, and your net happens to be down when you go to go on and it can't do it's check.

I have had a time where we had three days worth of storms in my area where we had no tv or internet. I live in America and rural area.

LOL. So yeah. Also several people have said no internet for long periods when moving, soldiers, and then random internet crash from the two major companies in the US.

Not to mention what happens if Microsoft's servers get hacked or Xbox Live is down for maintenance or it's Christmas day and the servers are overloaded. Even for someone who's internet connection is rock solid, buying into this kind of system requires trusting that Microsoft is going to keep things running smoothly on their end.

Ugh. I'd love some people to upvote my comment so see if he even responds.
ABSNX is the name.

It's basically what I spend the last two pages ranting about.

Well, all i have to say is....all that money that Sony has hemoraged after the launch of the ps3.... They are going to make back with the ps4 , thanks to Microsoft's stupidity...

If he's a PC centric Youtube personality, that's it really, those guys have had to deal with steam for so long, they welcome the console scape joining in the misery of a gaming hobby without the luxury of used games.

Anyone who thinks used game prices are not going to go up is fooling themselves. By forcing people to Trade in games to Gamestop instead of selling it to each other it forces the consumer to first get MUCH less money when selling a game and secondly it allows Gamestop to sell the used game at a much higher price. Right now you trade in a brand new game to Gamestop they will barely give you 20-30 dollars and then sell that used copy for $55 while the new one is $60. While you can sell that same game is selling on craigslist for $50.

This in turn will drive up the price for all New and Used games as the price will be controlled my MSFT, Publishers and Gamespot for ALL sales. Enjoyed buying new games at great discounts soon after they come out? Not gonna happen next gen.

Why would they release this now???? Is it an attempt to not have this as the center of attention on june 10TH ?

Why release this now ?

so all the games they announce at E3 will, by their hope, drown it out and people will forget about it or at least care less. better do it now than closer to launch day

I kind of expect some group like Anonymous to be all over that once Xbox One launches just to prove a point. x_x

Plenty of 360-owners will still probably buy this though which is the saddest part of this whole situation. :(

It's so sad, first time in my life I'm not excited about a next-gen console, good job MS, I hope you fall flat on your face with Xbone, you deserve it.

Pre Orth-gate I was one of those who believed that if MS does it, Sony almost certainly has to do it too if they don't want to lose some 3rd party support.

I hope I was wrong and Sony grabs MS by the balls taking this once in a lifetime opportunity and announces during their E3 press conference, that they won't suppress used sales and won't implement always-online DRM. After some of Sonys vague but somewhat positive comments about these problems, the incredible Twitter campaign and the reactions to it, I still hope for a miracle ;)

If both chose poorly, I'll go with the WiiU and PC instead. What world do we live in, where we can't even be excited about a new generation of videogame consoles, WTF seriously??11!

Something wrong with this thread. I start to read the text but all I see is this:

So this is what I wake up to.

Can't say I'm surprised. I hope we see Sony's official response sooner than later but hey it may be just as bad. Who knows anymore...

ive your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

lol ... so basically this is total spin. main take away is this .. only one person (you can label yrself a "family member" if you want) can be online at any one time playing a game from yr library.

as in ... if i'm online playing fifa ..... my brother can't be online on another xbone playing my copy of madden.

so really whats the point of even going to the trouble of specifying if this other account is me, or my aunt or whoever .... effectively i can do the same thing on ps3(s) right now by calling up my brother and giving him my psn password to use on his ps3 (ok so my trophy list etc will mine etc ...but meh ... )

Wow, just woke and seen this.

Didn't that Major Nelson tweet something like "we are listening" in response to that NoDRM# thing?

Doesn't seem they have listened at all.

As stupid as this may sound , i do not think many gamers have the ability to resist and much less skip the xbox one altogether.

No matter how bullshit this may be.

This is the sad and unfortunate reality. Sony could still lose to Microsoft despite everything we know so far. If people actually stood up to crap like this, we wouldn't be paying for Xbox Live Gold and a lot of the DLC wouldn't exist today.

Having suffered online passes this improves things for me and my son in some games, we can share the whole game rather than one of us being locked out of online.

I have no idea who he is, and why people should be listening to him, but downvoted anyway ;)

That's great. But a friend of mine share our games, now with the X1 we can no longer do that. Not even singleplayer games. So Microsoft just switched the people that they're blocking.

I twitterd to Neelie Kroes a few minutes ago. I don't think that this kind of DRM is allowed according to European law.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Commissioner_for_Digital_Agenda
Great idea. It is indeed against the current European laws, which state that every piece of software must be resellable without limits.

This will be the first time my decision to purchase a console--or not--will not be decided by the quality of the games on offer. It does not matter if Microsoft manages to secure 75% of all games releasing in the 1st year as "exclusives," I am not even considering this abomination as a potential purchase.

If Sony and Nintendo both take a similar stand, and are able to jointly control 50-70% of the market, should that not be enough to ensure that they get 3rd party support despite refusing to incorporate these atrocious measures.
