Xbox One: Details on Connectivity, Licensing (24 hour check-in) and Privacy Features

I loved The Duke. The controller, I mean. Muthafuck John Wayne.

Bad-Juniors still seem to be popping up in this thread.

Bish is going to have to make Internet Detective and Wrath of God Dispenser his only jobs for a while.

DGAF.

Totally not a true gamer, here. This is why I'm on a gaming forum bickering with people about consoles that aren't out yet, salivating over future games, and not wearing pants.

no need to invoke no true scotsman here, just that it's awful nice that on the surface, none of this seems to affect you, so you're cool with it. anti-consumer measures don't have to directly (or in immediately visible ways anyway) affect me for me to not celebrate them, much less reward them. at least this guy's with me.

Even with Shenmue 3, Half-Life 3 and Versus XIII I won't bother with the Xbox One.

PS4 it is, then.

oh, now you 'bout that Shenmue 3 life, eh <3

I really don't like this 'You've got internet in your house, just connect to it, everything else in your house is connected, what's the problem?' attitude.

The internet transmits data to and from my house. With a PC there are an insane amount of safeguards, customizations and software I can install to monitor and control that flow of data. If you can't give me legitimately good reasons why this benefits me with Xbone beyond desperately vague beyond belief 'cloud power', then no deal.

Bish already wiped the thread clean several times, but there are just so many out there it's impressive.
I see were the 1 Billion actually went.

Check this GIF I just edited in my post and you'll understand what I meant by big shiny red button. :P

All this really boils down to two broad camps.

1. Collectors, people who don't have internet, people who replay games and keep their old consoles, people who sell their games themselves, people who rent, people etc. etc. who are severely affected by this and are understandably pissed off about it.

It's easy to think that camp 1 should be everyone--and it is a huge chunk of serious gamers for sure, but it's not everyone. Enter camp 2....

2. People who truly aren't really affected by any of it. People who are always online, people who only/mostly play games online (and wouldn't be gaming if their internet is down anyway), people who just trade games in (they don't sell on their own, or collect games to play again later), people who sell/trade their consoles when they move onto the next gen (thus no concerns over being able to play the games years down the road) etc. etc.

Some of camp 2 may be pissed out of the principle of the matter, but they can more easily shrug it off as it doesn't affect their gaming habits at all, and they can maybe some some benefits in not having to change discs etc.

Thus some in camp 1 need to realize that not everyone who isn't livid over this crap is a shill or fanboy etc. Some people just aren't affected by it.

Myself, I guess I fall in camp 1 as I do resell my games after beating them. But that's it--I'm always online, I don't collect or replay games, I get rid of my consoles when I move on to a newer generation and so forth. So other than having severely limited reselling options (which pisses me off), my gaming wouldn't be much affected by this. So while I don't like it at all, I'm not in full on rage/boycott gaming mode yet either.

Even when someone is in camp 2, he should realize that the policy affects him as well, directly or indirectly.

They've got me by the balls, man.
10 years of a community that I'd like to continue gaming with... Oh man!

I can't believe the outright assumption that nothing will happen on ps4. ea dropped online passes.. it's coming.

i really am worried here...based on what we know, it looks like offline play shouldn't be a problem, but i wanna know about selling/trading/lending/renting etc used games. if its left up to the pubs, it'd be the lesser evil, but by no means ideal. monday can't come quick enough.

They've got me by the balls, man.

heh....years from now, there's gonna be a study done on how potent a psychological factor both achievements and friends list were, even where dropping BC digital catalogs and adding in unpleasantries were. it's gonna be interesting!

this needs to go on the next macro image

People fear change, yet in the end when it is the standard will learn to accept it.

Yeah, I also think its totally awesome that we lose our consumer rights like trading a game to whoever we want.

And it will also be so awesome, that all the small private gametrader are going to lose their jobs.

You think they'll all still be there?
No early launch. No price advantage. (... most likely) Weaker hardware. Massive backlash.
It's going to be ghost town.

Yeah, I also think its totally awesome that we lose all our consumer rights like trading a game to whoever we want.

Your consumer rights are yours to keep. If you don't want to play ball, then don't play ball. Stick with the current gen or go with the alternative. Right?

Right, because people shouldn't have an opinion they should just be forced to go with whatever the popular crowd believes. There is alot of good that goes with the bad, someone just needs to point it out so everyone isn't being spammed with anti-MS crap all the time.

THE BAD IS NOT A NECESSARY EVIL IN THIS. What the fuck man.

These limitations are there because they want them to, not because it was a means to an end.

Why do you have to resell at select retailers?
Why can't you deactivate the games on your own?
Why can you only transfer the license ONCE?
Why just flat out fucking kill the sales of games by individuals?

So half the rumors that GAF trusted users confirmed proven false yet everyone is still on the hate train. Wow, alright ability to trade games with friends, no fees, able to have your entire library from any console, share with up to ten family members, ect.. Sounds like some great things, the industry has to evolve and it will with or without your consent. People fear change, yet in the end when it is the standard will learn to accept it.

So when it's the standard that people will punch you in the face on a regular basis, are you also willed to accept it ?

Sorry, but that statement's are nonsense....

:lol

Bish, plz, press the big shiny red button!

I do wonder if some innocent people get caught in the crossfire as a result?

But then that just shows that this stealth marketing is really really fucking bad because we only become more and more hostile. It's like smacking a nest of hornets hoping to kill one or two. Then they slice you up completely.

Though this one called Gears of War overrated, no idea if that means he's trying to throw us off the trail or it really does mean he's naive/completely wrong about WHY people had issues here. And I think the idea of possibly accidentally giving away my game for good to a friend is worse than just forcing them to pay a fee to buy it themselves.

Though in the off chance Vex is for real and not a shill: I would honestly prefer they just went full on digital, this is a painfully awkward compromise between how physical media currently works and going digital, as going full digital would kill some of the more problematic aspects like needing at least one call home every day. Nevermind that to a degree the future doesn't need to be forced: People seemed to mainly just lose interest in buying CDs and the PC retail market shriveled away as Steam rose, if they and Sony put forth compelling enough digital stores more and more people will just buy digitally until retail is only good for a small, dedicated niche. This pretty much just spits in everyone's faces: those that prefer to stick with physical media, those who want to go all digital, those who want a mix, and those who simply don't have good damn internet. It only satisfies a small niche that wants to get physical media and play without the disc (eating your cake and keeping it too) or people who seriously do think this is truly the best path forward for publishers... though I'd think their sentiments would've been satisfied by a full on digital system ANYWAY.

You joined GAF a week ago and most of your posts are defending MS. Hmm, strange..

Can finally welcome Sony back into my life without hesitation. Hopefully Kaz wont fold and follow this bullshit too.

:( should I just start saying 'you all have this many posts and are on the hate train, what are you a PS4 fanboy?!'

I wouldn't, but seriously.... Seen way too many of those 'you're a MS troll' quotes

I'm serious. Everything about this is so anti consumer, that even if it doesn't directly affect you, you should still be against the whole concept and idea of what they are trying to do.

So lets look at the good......

Share with family- already could do that

friends play games on my account- could already do that and so on.

So no. Nothing good. Same shit we could already do but now we have to hope the publishers will allow us.

Not to mention the internet connection BS.

Because I own an Xbox and a 360, the timing is just coincidence. I really like Cerny and alot of things the PS4 are doing and will most likely buy one if I like the titles released on it. Unlike alot of people on here and other sites I have never had a problem with MS and I don't understand the massive hate because it seems that everything that comes out no matter how positive it is, is picked apart. Yet if Sony were to do the same thing it would be praised, talk about your double-standards.

I, for one, am glad that there are some people in this world that will be dragged out kicking and screaming before their rights are stripped away in a futile attempt to collect a few more pennies and dimes that aren't even there.

Put it this way... I can tell who's a junior lately without even looking, just by their stance on Xbone. Isn't that odd?
Oh, and check my history. I've defended MS here and on the original GAF since before the original Xbox. I didn't turn on them until this year.
I actually came here from TeamXbox to counter-troll originally.

Many of us have stated we'd bail on both and go only with PC and/or Wii U plus handhelds. And personally I'd begrudgingly accept if 1. they were committed to damn good forward compatibility for once (Don Mattrick statements give no confidence on the Xbox side) and 2. if they at least killed the 24 hour check in.

A simple month ban or just enough to bypass E3 and no-bubbles no-troubles.

Your consumer rights are yours to keep. If you don't want to play ball, then don't play ball. Stick with the current gen or go with the alternative. Right?

This is my plan. I am not going to buy a Xbone and when Sony does something similiar, I am not going to buy a PS4.

I am lucky that I have an incredible backlog on PS3 and 360 and theres still Nintendo.

So do they charge other kinds of fees?

When I saw that I interpreted "Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games," to mean they don't take an extra cut as a platform from third-party transfers, but reserve the right to do so as a first-party publisher for the games they publish.

I will not be buying and Xbox One.

Fucking bullshit.

This is a big let down. What's with the fact that you can only sell your game once to one of your friends? Why one once? Why does he have to be in my 'friend's list' for at least 30 days? And online checks every 24 hours? Come on.

At least, it seems the voice recognition can be completely turn off, although it isn't very different than when you completely disconnect the console.

About as odd as the KINECT ALWAYS WATCHING YOU

oOOoooOooO Conspiracy... :P

It sucks being a "fanboy", i guess. I want to like this console, I want gaming to move forward, I want Gamestop to fuck off... But until PS4 comes out with their policies i'm questioning myself.

Honestly, if I was in the position of the mods I'd just be fed up with this and showing little to no mercy. Maybe if they completely did not check out with an ad agency, but there's too many of them cropping up to sweat it too much.

Because they want to to trade in solely at those select retailers. It's that simple.

No, if Sony does it, they will receive the same amount of hate. There is nothing accomplished game wise here and more rights are taken away than being granted.

Private market, used game sales, lending, renting, boned. People in rural areas and underdeveloped countries boned. So forth.

Here are reasons why people are against it:

Will cause game trade ins to plummet, and will cause game prices to rise since less competition from private and mom and pop stores.

Will remove a hobby from several college goers and residents of rural areas.

Also will cause if successful, more companies go the deny consumer rights pathway.

Sony confirmed quite a few times PS4 will not have a required Internet connection at all.

holy moly.. i just hope , but a little bit fear, that Sony will/has to walk the same plank on (at least some points of ) this. pls not. I like my little videogame shops. And how does rental work with this? Will this be special neutral versions?

good editorial by EG. PC really has the best of both worlds in regards to physical and digital copy

One thing i know for sure i will never buy an Xbox One if they keep all that nonsense, and if Sony does the same i will never buy a PS4, i would rather stick to PC gaming.

I believe this will be the end of console gaming, this is unbelievable :(
