What new settings do you guys want to see next gen? I'm hoping for a modern western personally, think the tv series Justified.

A totally digital console would have the same requirement. Without a regular check, you could have one console constantly offline playing the game at will, and other consoles online playing the sale copy of the game.
The games on demand on the 360 have a hourly check, IIRC.

Nope. As long as you're on the console that the game's license is on, you can remain offline as much as you want(any gamertag can play that game offline as well). If you're playing it on a console where the license isn't, you must be logged into your gamertag while connected to the Internet. No other gamertag can play the game on that Xbox unless your gamertag is logged in and connected to the Internet.

I don't know if it was posted before but @supererogatory posted about Lucid next racing title, sadly is iOS :/

Edit: maybe someone can post the tweets I'm on my phone.

Edit 2: nvm saw the thread about it.

I know people keep wishing for steam on the PS4 or XB1...

but what if GOG was on the XB1? How awesome would that be?

Microsoft still have some things to answer like why is 24hrs, what are the benefits etc.

They designed the console to be connected to the internet. It's a requirement. They also went all-digital with their games, so the game is no longer the disc. (All those are absolutely valid choices and don't by themselves have consequences for used games and stuff)

With that in mind they naturally need to enforce licensing terms. The big one here is that a game can only be played with one console at a time.

So how could they go about that?
Say someone starts a game on one console and goes offline, then nothing would prevent them from starting the same game (same license) on another console and playing one game on multiple consoles at the same time.
If there was no online requirement at all, someone could buy a game, take his console offline, then go to gamestop and sell the game, and his offline console wouldn't know. So he could keep playing it.

So how can they make sure you aren't abusing the license?
If they could rely on the console being always-online, then when you start a game, they could simply check 'do you have a license to play that game? is that game already being played on another console?' and then start the game or not.
But they can't rely on always-online connectivity. Since they do, however, have the internet requirement, the easiest way to do it are regular checks.

There's nothing inherently evil or anti-consumer in that. It all goes back to designing the console with a requirement to be connected to the internet.

Maybe the specific intervals they've chosen could be different, but if they are too long, you run into the same issues. If I can stay offline for lets say three days, then that gives me more time to play a game in two places at once (i.e. multiple people) and there's nothing they could do about it.

There may also be some other solutions. E.g. if instead of just disconnecting you could tell the console to go into an offline mode, then maybe it could lock your games so you couldn't access them from other consoles during that time. but that would increase the complexity and come with its own set of issues. The console wouldn't know what specific game you wanted to lock, so they would possibly have to lock them all even though you are allowed to play two different games on two consoles at the same time. Or if there was an issue with the console so you couldn't come out of the offline mode then your games couldn't be unlocked.

I don't really know how else they could go about that. Could they just ignore it and hope people don't abuse the system? I don't think so. Especially since it would be way easier to abuse then Steam or iOS. E.g. 10 members of your family could just play one game at the same time and they wouldn't even have to log in with your account or do any other things to make it happen.

The Xbox One gets criticized all the time these days for all kinds of reasons. I personally do not feel that the online-requirement or Kinect privacy warrant that level of outrage. These (perceived) issues are way overblown.
The only issue where the outrage is really deserved are the licensing terms. Lending, reselling, renting. Those are the big things that really suck about the One.
Here the PS4 has a significant competitive advantage and the outrage is warranted. Therefore I hope that Microsoft will be forced to improve their service.
I would like so see lending, unlimited resales without Gamestop, and I would want all those things to work the same for digital copies as for disc copies.

It may actually be good for consumers that Microsoft is going all-digital now. The biggest reason Microsoft might enable these licensing scenarios is that Sony has an advantage. If everyone went all-digital at the same time, no one would be forced to improve on the One's current limitations.

Sony is seemingly still relying on the disk to authenticate the license, so they don't run into all those issues. But what about their digital purchases? We've finally arrived at a point where day-1 digital sales are possible on both Xbox and PS4. One the One there isn't much of a distinction between digital and disc copies. The same rules for gifting and sharing them with your family will apply. But how will the PS4 handle digital copies? Will you be able to share your games with family members without you having to be logged in? Will you be able to gift those games? What will they do to make sure one license is only used once at the same time?
For now people will still have the choice to buy the discs. So even if Sony has similar limitations for digital copies, people will be able to overlook that. But what about next-next-gen?

Jezuz that's...an idea that makes my head wobble.

I am reading elsewhere that it looks like up to 2 people can play a title you have in your "family" at the exact same time. Depending on how they define family that is actually pretty sweet. But it could be wrong.

If the family share works that way, I most definitely take advantage of it.

Also, with GOG, the interesting this is they make old games work on modern PCs. How awesome would it be if they also worked on old xbox titles. I know, in my head, that this would never work, but it'd be funny if they 'hired' GOG to take care of BC or get older titles work on modern hardware.

This is the fun stuff about E3. Can't wait!

Ya if?!? I would be surprised but that would be a very unique thing. I am not sure how I would take it.

I saw the VERY unsubstantiated rumor of Witcher 3 being on MS stage. But instead seeing a GoG relationship would be all kind of bonkers.

Hello XboxGAF,

Let's have a good E3! Hope we can enjoy all of the game reveals! :)

Cheers

Being able to lend my game to a friend for starters

Add your friend to your family list (10 users max) and let him play your games that way. If two players can play concurrently (main system and 1 friend) you can even co-op or multiplay with that friend. You can't do that with a single disc on the 360 unless you're both in the same room on the same machine.

Basically every disc or digital copy instantly has the potential to become two purchases this way. This will make lan play much more convenient than it is now with need to buy 2 copies of the game you plan to lan.

I'll be working through the press conference and would like to watch it when I get home. Do any Gaffers who had similar experiences for past E3s know a good way to get right to the press conference after it has happened? I don't want everything spoiled for me by the front page of a gaming website. Should I be able to watch it on my Xbox as soon as it's done?

Er... Yeah. I doubt that MS would let two systems play the same game at the same time. Their confusing wording doesn't even suggest this.

Time to go to bed in Sweden. I will dream about the 1 billion dollars and what MS did do with them. I think we are up to some really big supprises tomorrow.

Some have suggested otherwise. Even if they don't though it's still an option to use in regards to "lending". If you have more than 10 people that you regularly lend games to I wish I was you...as I barely have even 3 people i can game with in my area. at least that are interested in the same games as I am.

These 10 people may need to have sub-accounts to your main account be considered part of your "family". Again the wording is confusing and vague as hell and I'm not sure MS will clarify on Monday.

There is a thread on here for people who can't watch the conferences live which will have all the links

I absolutely hope it's true and it works. One of my most desired things other than the occulus rift.

Yeah I hope so as well. Announcing Occulus Rift support would be great as well. I got to try OR last week and it was pretty sweet even though it was low-res.

Despite the official stance being that the 24 hr thing is needed due to drm, I'm pretty sure the real reason is they want every console connected to the internet and they didn't have the balls to make a 24/7 requirement right off the bat.

The 24 hour thing will soften the blow when games in the future require a connection since every owner already has to have a way to connect to use the device.

Well thats it, im going to sleep.

Just rewatched the E3 MS Conference 2005, if its going to be similar like that then im going to die happily.

I'll be dreaming good tonight

rawr!

Odah out.
