I've work with Microsoft DRM forever. Its been in the heart of their software for ages. Palladium was their initiative for hardware DRM, end to end. These are the same guys mocked for all the "are you sure" pop-ups in Windows Vista's security.

They live and breathe DRM. It doesn't surprise me one iota that they think they've come up with a masterstroke system to lure third parties.

Yes, all you have to do is set up a new Windows 8 computer and Office to know this. They are as controlling as one can get.

If it is one thing I find unbelievable it is DRM is actually worse on the Xbone. Can I not watch tv after 24 his too? Does the kinect record everything I do offline and send it to MS at check in?

Officials have said that if your XBO doesn't check in online within 24 hours, you can still watch TV and disc movies. Just no games or online apps.

I've gotta say it is looking grim for the consumer. We know some of what MS is planning already and we know that publishers at large are, at the very least, profoundly aroused by the idea.

Unless Sony mandates that this cannot happen on their platform (and they have already said otherwise) publishers will likely just implement their own systems for the PS4.

That leaves the consumers, NOT SONY, as the only ones who can shape the industry in another direction.

And lets be real here. There are plenty of regular daily gamers who aren't going to be thinking about consumer rights. They are going to want to play with their buddies on the online juggernaut that is Xbox Live like they have since the original Xbox and not thinking ahead about how this may limit their access to these games in the future or questioning the degree of ownership they have.

It doesn't help that by the end of the year Microsoft will shove so much Xbox One into your life and media that you'll be dreaming about it.

This whole situation is quite alarming.

OK all this shit is beyond being 'just business'; it's evil.

If there's one thing being overlooked, its how Microsoft hasn't said a peep about being a Gold member is better or different than being a Silver member. I fully expect really drastic differences between the two.

I knew that whole "Bu bu but it was teh third parties! THEY MADE US DO IT" was a bunch of fucking garbage. No they didn't, MS, you greedy fucks. And all the "journalists" parroting that shit should be ashamed.

I can't even wrap my brain around DRM being worse than what they've already stated. Fuck me side ways and backwards.... I literally cannot fathom it. :|

I really hope Sony speaks on DRM ASAP. Don't wait this shit out. I want to be on the god damn hype train full speed ahead, but I can't do that knowing Sony may still have this DRM shit. Please, Sony, let it end tomorrow.

They both need to have amazing shows this year. Sony needs to show off the hardware and Microsoft needs to convince everyone not to hate them.

It's the current market incumbent and the brand is shorthand for videogames to many that don't do any research about gaming beyond store clerks and Wal-Mart displays. Yeah, lots of people are gonna buy 'em.
I still don't get why. In a world of backwards compatibility sure, but when everything is being reset from scratch?

The hardcore know what's up, and the casuals expect to be placated, not restricted. Xbox fought to a strong position this round when Sony should have kept the ball but fumbled. No reason we can't see that happen again.

How well did the PS3 do out of the gate? And keep in mind, it was never a bad console, just an expensive one.

The drama of a guy typing leaked info in code on a message board the night before the big press conferences is getting me hard. This is an amazing night.

I expect MS is fully aware of the bad reputation they are going through right now and have flown in a cadre of plants for their conference. Expect much more fake whooping and hollering than their last conference.
Journalists will start tweeting that they were bumped from their seats at the conference due to...scheduling conflicts!

So yesterday, CTV hosted a story where they said Microsoft and the U.S. government have been collaborating for years on gathering intelligence from the population. Cyber Surveillance, if you will.

Now Microsoft is releasing a gaming console called the 'Xbox One' that always has to be online to allow you to play single player games. Also, a camera in the Kinnect 2.0 has to be connected to the system, if you remove it, the system locks. The Xbox One OS system is going to use 3GB of ram for the OS system. Therefore, you have to ask yourself what the system intends to do while you are gaming... A creepy, pervasive spy in the cyberworld. Also, you cannot lend your games to friends, as the system is locked to online drm. Goodbye EB games.

Who knows what that OS system of yours is doing.

Time to get a PS4. :D

http://globalnews.ca/news/624621/what-is-prism-a-cyber-surveillance-explainer/

Something, something, PRISM.

That kinnect 2.0 always on is watching you.
I'm all for piling on Microsoft when it's deserved, but it's clear you didn't read the article you linked to. As it mentions, all companies, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Google ect, only hand over private information when a warrant is provided.

If there is an onstage gameplay demo of Mirror's Edge 2 at the MS conference and the player isn't holding a controller in their hands, I will LITERALLY cry. Head tracking is fine.
As it's not an exclusive, it won't require kinect to play.*

* Note, your experience with this content will be enhanced with kinect, and the infinite power of the cloud!

Thank you for all of the truth facts. It's hard to believe that Microsoft is going to do even worse stuff than has already been announced.

At this point, I have to assume there is a Daedric lord functioning behind the scenes. I name him Moneygrubeftopoles.

lesa Activbliz whcih makes mye haed fulll of weird#!
I'm not surprised. Ignoring the Diablo 3 always online fiasco, Activision has traditionally been pretty hands off when it comes to DRM and the demonization of used games. The CODs are always available on competing PC DD platforms, and Kotick has said before he thinks used games are a good value to the consumer and he has no interest in blocking them.

I have to work tomorrow so I won't see the MS conference. If I try to keep up I'll never get any work done. Shame because the recap never does the thread justice.

I'll be home for the Sony one. Good thiing it's going to be so late.

the sony secret fortress must be strong if our god and savior cboat can't penetrate its defenses

The biggest surprise coming from all of this is that Activision isn't spearheading the DRM/no used game debacle.

i would expect EA rather than Activision to spearhead it. after all, EA were the ones with online pass and day "1 dlc for new purchasers only" nonsense. at least activision didn't really dabble in that stuff.

I'm not surprised. Ignoring the Diablo 3 always online fiasco, Activision has traditionally been pretty hands off when it comes to DRM and the demonization of used games.

That's one thing Activision has been sorta great at. Not one Call of Duty had a online pass, and they could've gotten away with including one easily by CoD consumers.

Wait...really?

Huh? I thought Mirrors Edge 2 was exclusive, Dead Rising 3 wasn't.

I think we are going to have to wait and see on that

CBOAT confirmed a few weeks back that DR3 is indeed a console exclusive (but didn't specify if MS or Sony). This proves it is MS. He also said there is only one EA exclusive for the One, but that exclusive would be getting a PC port. This has to be TitanFall at this point.

So according to that ME2 can't be exclusive. Probably just money-hatted silence on the PS4 port.

No more silver everyone who buys Xbox One will need to get gold unless you're only using he system for Blu ray or tv.

That is my guess and it makes total sense given their cloud push for single player games.

It's crazy to think that all those people who were whining about "evil Microsoft trying to take over" during the Xbox/PS2/GC era... were completely right. Mind blown.

Yes, all you have to do is set up a new Windows 8 computer and Office to know this. They are as controlling as one can get.
Hell, they made HD-DVD as a stalling tactic! They're fucking unreal and have no business shepherding the growth of gaming as a medium.

If this comes across as too anti-Microsoft, then understand: I love the techs and engineers that are the heart's blood of that company. I have nothing but love and respect for the people that designed the Xbox 360 and overcame the odds. But at some point all of Microsoft's good ideas are snatched from the hands of those programmers and engineers and are sacrificed whole cloth to their marketing and corporate development wing, who then rip out the beating heart and eat it for sustenance.

I wish it wasn't so. The Xbox of 2006 does not deserve to go out like a bitch, and modern gaming is in it's debt.

I feel privileged to be posting in this thread. Thanks CBOAT for this info, I never doubted you and I think GAF really appreciates your love of good gaming.

Can someone translate this shit?

1. Confirmed Microsoft is actively attempting to get developers to not mention PS4 versions. If they don't say "OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE" expect a PS4 version. #truthfact
2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.
3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.
4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.
5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.
6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.
7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Tanks
8. Live paywall still there.
9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.
10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.
11. No DRM info for PS4.

I know CBOAT is as truthfact as can be, but I can't comprehend how MS's DRM can get worse than what has already been mentioned.

I just can't.

I think that Kinect DRM that doesn't allow movie rentals to play if there are too many people in the room is going to be confirmed. There are already insiders from MCV confirming.

I wonder....

I understand the expectation that Sony will just announce the exact same thing tomorrow, maybe 15% less draconian, but if they DON'T... and the drm is the same as the Ps3... there will be a flood of applause and crying gifs unlike any the internet has ever witnessed.
