And here I was thinking that this was the "evil" publisher's idea. So fucking wrong. I can't believe MS is courting 3rd parties with something like this.

Paying not to mention PS4 versions, Cloud just because of DRM, lying about rental, spyware Kinect, PRISM... I am beyond disgusted. MS sounds like something that came out of Orwell's book.

Yeah, absolutely despicable, but that's the corporate world for you... I doubt Sony will leave this whole DRM mess without dirtying their hands, as well.

I really do hope them being hush hush is because they're not announcing absurd DRM plans, but have instead chosen to weaponize their lack of DRM. It's normally not something that's really a big deal, but when your competitor's going full crazy with it and the internet is fuming? You COULD reassure them right away... or you could let them sweat it, let Microsoft fire their whole arsenal, then go "oh yeah we're not doing that." It'd probably be $300 all over again.

I think the fact that Sony has been unusually quiet and it was an idea of Microsoft's hints that Sony actually is not going to have Always Online DRM, but is keeping it close to their chest so as to not give Microsoft an advantage with EA and Ubisoft until it was too late to change plans for the first year. We can be sure that of major third-party publishers that Activision and Take-Two are not particularly against used game sales, but EA and Ubisoft are a different story. I think the only ones who know about Sony's possible DRM plans or lack thereof is Sony themselves, and they are seeing how others react first.

Surely Sony could dispel any notion of the 'exclusivity' of games at their conference by just saying "and we have third parties working on these games..." With a slide?

Hmm

If Microsoft first came to the publishers and said that they were doing a DRM based system that allows for them to come in and charge for used games and basically everything. Where would the guarantees be for MS to implement such a policy?

I mean if Sony was doing it too, wouldn't there be ubiquitous content/support on all platforms from the word go?

This settles it for me, there is somekind of agreement on DRM measures between Sony and Microsoft.

Microsoft doing it alone and going that far would be suicide, this can't be true, they're not that stupid.
I wondered last yr when rumor came up. It felt like something they both agreed to handle

MS: 'can we have your game as a 3rd party exclusive on XBone?'
Pub: 'no'
MS: 'ok...can we get a six month exclusivity window?'
Pub: 'no'
MS: '3 months? 30 days? 7 days? 24 hours?'
Pub: 'no'
MS: 'exclusive DLC'
Pub: 'nah'
MS: 'fuck. Can we pay you money to just not mention that you have a PS4 version coming'
Pub: 'wtf? Ok sure. But if a journalist asks directly we'll have to answer'
MS: 'ok, whatever, just take this pile of cash'

Beautiful. Goodnight, you crazy train-based body part, until we hear from you once more. May your infogloves always be warm and cozy.

:lol that gave me a good laugh.

Well, but this isn't exactly a new thing (see Diablo 3 for consoles).

Or, you know, Sony with Diablo III, and maybe Destiny to an extent. It is stupid though, whoever does it

So MS went to the publishers, not the other way around? Most shocking (maybe not) thing I have read here.

And now some of you are convinced Sony HAS to be doing the same thing. God I hope not.

This settles it for me, there is somekind of agreement on DRM measures between Sony and Microsoft.

Microsoft doing it alone and going that far would be suicide, this can't be true, they're not that stupid.

The only thing I can see is that MS and Sony had very different strategies in trying to woo publishers.

Sony said - come make games for us, we have removed the barriers that you generally encounter which should reduce some of the cost you incurred last generation in trying to develop software for our system.

Microsoft said - come make games for us, we are developing a platform that restricts used game sales and prevents piracy. These measures should make you more money.

So lemme get this straight:

-Microsoft proposed publishers the DRM plan, not the other way around. EA & Ubisoft support it, while Activision is sceptical about it?

-The Xbone DRM is worse that expected, his sources refuse to spill the deets because they'd risk their jobs.

-Dead Rising 3 is exclusive to Xbone, and they're getting exclusive DLC for another Capcom game?

-Phil Spencer's secret game for Xbone is World of Tanks?

-Mirrors Edge 2 on Xbone?

-Sony's ship is too tight for leaks captain!

Or something to that order.

The same could be said about charging to play games online...

The whole idea that MS approached third parties with the DRM plan goes along perfectly with what famousmortimer said in the lead-up to #PS4NoDrm.

GAF has so many insiders!

So if I've read this right, pubs are being paid to not mention PS4 versions. What is to stop Sony listing them all either in their conference or on a massive fucking board/TV screen at their booth?

If EA and ubisoft are the big backers, and other publishers are less sure, Sony could get away with more open DRM by allowing EA and Ubisoft to force users to so into origin/Uplay accounts, which would effectively give those publishers always on DRM if required, without affecting anyone else?

Translated multiple times but yeah you got the gist of it. Here is a more detailed one;
1. Confirmed Microsoft is actively attempting to get developers to not mention PS4 versions. If they don't say "OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE" expect a PS4 version. #truthfact

2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.

4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.

5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.

6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.

7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Tanks

8. Live paywall still there.

9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.

10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.

11. No DRM info for PS4.

If this rumour spreads, at least some websites will specifically go and ask publishers about PS4 versions of announced XBone games.

I love the way Acti is sceptical about this. Make sense since I imagine they make shitload of money based on COD map packs and the toys for Skylanders so they probably want more people being able to have the actual game, not caring if its new or old.

If a publisher is unable to say "PS4" or doesn't say "Xbox Exclusive" and instead says "No comment"... assume that it'll be on the PS4.

It's not really different to how it's been in past years, yes they will show their games but on X1 hardware with no PS4 version in sight, if they're asked about the PS4 version they'll just say "yes it's coming on that console".

Unless MS added an extra layer to that, which I doubt they could.

Shocking revelation. Like every E3 PC ever before.

2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.

There is a rental strategy but it involves mandatory demos. No game renting as we know it now but that shouldn't be surprising either.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.

#nonfact Can't be proven, can't be disproven. Wow.

4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.

#nonfact2 So you know they are worse? But after telling everything else you cannot tell this one? LOL!!! Spill the beans or don't. Mysterious stuff like this just shows that you really might just have an agenda against Microsoft.

5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.

As if we didn't know already.

6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.

Wasn't it cancelled a couple of months ago? I think you lurk on Youtube and fell for a fake from two days ago (Prince of Persia E3 leak).

7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Tanks

And if they don't show it it's gonna be at Gamescom, right?

8. Live paywall still there.

What a surprise. As if anybody expected Microsoft to give up 1 billion a year in revenue.

9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.

Known for quite some time as well. A rumour on top of a rumour is ridiculous.

10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.

Again, how convenient.

11. No DRM info for PS4.

#convenientliefact

So let me get this straight: You seem to imply you know about Microsofts PC, yet you have no clue about all those new IPs that they're gonna present? It just doesn't add up. I think you'll need a new account in a couple of hours but let's see. If you turn out legit I'm gonna eat some crow but so far it seems like you're just an annoying troll.

There is only one way for Microsoft to make their DRM worse...

And that would be to make Xbox LIVE Gold not only still a paid subscription, but mandatory for ALL GAMING FUNCTIONS (including singleplayer) as well...

EDIT:

Shocking revelation. Like every E3 PC ever before.

It must take a lot of effort to be this dense, huh?

Look at his post history and then try to edit your post please.

that sounds like a huge waste of money...
it's kinda funny that despite having the worst DRM that some publishers wanted they still don't seem to be able to get notable exclusives? on the other hand from rumors Sony actually might get some big games... sounds like MS got conned by some pubs :P
