Super Mario 3D World for Wii U

I would have preferred something more in the lines of previous console Marios, but this looks super fun. The only thing I can complain about is the graphics. They look clean, but simply outclassed by the team doing Mario Kart.

So, I told myself I'd wait until the new 3D Mario game was shown before making a decision as to whether or not I'd get a Wii U this year or possibly even ever. I'm relieved to have that out of the way now.

with the talk of speed running with Toad in the developer video, Nintendo HAS to put in leaderboards right?
nintendo?
Well, there at least seems to be replay functionality of some sort, judging from the movie reel icon in the corner at one point during the trailer.

Hope I'm not reading too much into that.

Huge disappointment. Mario galaxy was the reason i bought a wii despite hating the whole concept of weak hardware with a gimmick.

But this game looks bland as fuck.

Imagine if they made a Super Mario 64-2, where you had to go back to the mushroom kingdom after something terrible happened, (getting overrun by something) and you had to revist all the past levels from the first one but everything has changed in those worlds (again being overrun by someone or something) Think the same vein as Link to the Past II but on a more epic scale....More undiscovered rooms, more stars, and they could have had multiplayer in it too.

That would have been the Megaton. :(

Would you also like a unicorn?

Played every level of the demo at e3 and got all green stars in each.

It plays amazing and smooth. Looks grat too. You guys are nuts.

Also - MK8 at 60 FPS looks phenomenal. No joke - who would have thought MK would be the graphical powerhouse.

quick questions, how linear are the levels and how much exploring is there in the game?

Because it's fun to just explore the little worlds the game is filled with? The day hasn't passed for those kinds of games, Nintendo has just decided to throw them away for games that are more immediately pleasurable for players so they can sell more copies of their games.

How can you even have fun with the platforming in modern Mario games when it's so braindead easy? It took an entire playthrough of 3D Land before levels with even a HINT of challenge started coming.

I get more out of a game where I can jump around and make my own fun in an open, creative environment than the guided amusement park rides Nintendo is making these days:
"And if you look to your right you'll see nostalgic reference #132" Oooh, Ahhhh.
"And if you look to your left you'll find a powerup that removes any need to actually platform or control your character with any skill to win" Oooh, ahhhh. *snaps photo*

Lol, exactly. NSMB and 3D Land don't even have a hint of challenge. No secrets to explore other than finding 3 Star Coins. Point A to Point B.

I wish this was coming in November. I wonder if development delays are causing the Dec date, or if they have some business strategy to space things out. I will buy it on day 1.

I have no doubt that this will be a great game, and I'm more than satisfied with how it looks on a technical level, but it really is SM3DL with prettier graphics and co-op. About the least inspired creative direction they could have taken.

The game looks very "standard" Mario.

After going back and looking at the Galaxy 2 trailer, I can see what people mean by better artstyle and the like. The levels also seemed more creative. This looks as "by the numbers" as Mario can get, and it screams "save Wii U" instead of "let's make a fantastic game."

Furthermore, I believe that the success of the Wii allowed the games that they put out to be closer to that "let's make a fantastic game" mentality, as they didn't have to worry about doing the most formulaic things that they can think of to save the system. I mean, at Wii U's launch, we had NSMBU which was, in Reggie's own words (IIRC) "people said we needed to have Mario at launch, we have Mario at launch." Panic mode Nintendo really isn't best Nintendo, and I really hope that this game turns out to be WAY better than what it looks like right now.

Furthermore, I hope that none of the other Nintendo games suffer.

I really like the look of the game honestly, the level design while not wow inducing, looks really solid and I love the idea that they are bringing back the different character abilities ala SMB 2.

Kinda burning disappointment, even though it still looks good.

I am not sure if it's a platform game or a party game, there's barely any challenge in the demos shown so far.
It feels very tame and unambitious, compared to Galaxy and even Sunshine (or 64).

I hope they'll do an HD remake of the two Galaxy games.

I know hyperbole and apoplectic reaction are kind of a GAF staple, but why is everyone shitting on the level design when we've only seen one or maybe two levels?

The off screen footage from E3 at 60FPS look fantastic. I wish we could get some 60fps direct feed, but that will have to wait I guess.

Looks fun at least. Not what I particularly wanted but whatever.

I'll be curious to see E3 demo impressions of this. Perhaps it'll be pure joy like the previous games, regardless of it being a safe extension of Mario 3D Land.

I love how someone like Kai pops in, who has played Mario 3D World, and who says it's a great game, gets ignored for more hating. How many of you here have actually played it besides Kai?

I loved 3D Land. It's my favourite 3D Mario, so naturally I'm excited for this. I just think it's a bit of a joke that it's called 3D World. I wish they'd support stereoscopic 3D on Wii U, but I know it's never going to happen.

Naturally it's going to get shit on, just as Sunshine did, because it's not revolutionary like 64 or Galaxy. Let's not let that overshadow what looks like a great game though. Sunshine was great, it just didn't raise the bar.

More or what I loved in 3D Land? Yes please.

It has a lot of potential, and I see myself playing it at some point. But after watching the Mario Kart 8 trailer it does look underwhelming. But who knows, it might end up being an awesome game.

Edit: I'm digging the new cat suit.

RIP Stars... I hate flagpoles. :|

They at least could've used the goal posts... considering they called it 'World'. I doubt there will even be secret exits -sigh-.

Galaxy was going to be a hard game to follow up but still I don't love the direction here.

SM3DL was a great game on the 3DS but the actual 3D gameplay with the usually stationary camera made for some very straightforward gameplay. I don't want that returning. It makes everything feel like a 2.5D game. I want open areas and free camera control to approach levels from different directions.

The multiple characters that have different abilities/traits is a problem too in my eyes because the level design has to accommodate all of them vs. NSMB where they are essentially just skins.

I feel the same way. I thought 3D Land was a solid game (though it had absolutely no replayablilty for me, but I enjoyed it for what it was), and they made it this kinda 2D/3D hybrid with simple, chunky elements because it was on a small, low-res screen with no second stick for camera.

It felt a bit too restricted for my taste. I think Nintendos first HD console deserves something more groundbreaking - even the music reminds me heavily of 3D Land. 3D Land felt rather bite-sized, despite the harder second half of the game, which was mostly remixes of earlier stages - I felt like the game ran out of ideas too early and got kinda repetetive. And man, those boss battles were incredibly dull, except for those two sweet final Bowser fights.

(Those glass pipes look really cool for some reason, and I like the return of the SMB3-era character illustrations in the top left corner!)

The 1-2 combo of this and Donkey Kong is so depressing. Too much of the NSMB design philosophy apparent in this and that sucks.

This -- in my mind -- confirms that Nintendo actually expected to NSMBU to a be a 'big f'n deal'. Now they're caught with their pants down, so they're making a Wii U version of a successful 3DS game and an expansion to NSMBU.

They didn't actually expect that a big Galaxy-type Mario would be needed this gen.

Looks fun and will probably be a good game but Nintendo are not in the right position to be playing safe with their games. NSMBU did not work and this probably won't either

Sorry, the design here looks nothing like SMB3 to me. A lot of Galaxy (especially 2) took place on small relatively linear levels that I would say is tighter than what we've seen of this game. Of course it's hard to tell from only seeing a few minutes of the game.

I disagree. They are taking the same 2d design philosophy and applying it to this game like 3d land but taking a step further with better scope. Galaxy games and SM64 feel and look different than this and play nothing like the 2d marios.

Everybody knows its going to play well. It was always going to play well.

But that means people shouldn't be disappointed by what they are seeing?

Besides, positive impressions from a demo doesn't automatically make this a "great game". I'm sure it will be a good game based on the development team, but already proclaiming this is a "great game" based on the demo is premature.

This is great. I wanted them to do something different to change it up, and they did. I'm going to play through the entire thing with somebody else. This is the game I am most looking forward to.

The changes for the other games aren't nearly as interesting so far. In Donkey Kong you can see thins from a different perspective, play characters with different special moves, and throw enemies/items like in Mario 2. Those are changes, but nothing compared to adding co-op to 3D Mario games.

Haha, wow, that looks actually pretty cool, has a very arcadey feeling to it with the four-player action and the intense colors.

Who knows, maybe it´s a case of "similar formula, improved execution". I absolutely hated NSMB1 but actually really enjoyed NSMB2, so I guess Nintendo might be able to properly upscale it in scope again and take an old formula and polish it enough to make it feel fresh again.

Not the revolutionary Mario game I was expecting but it looks like it'll be alot of fun regardless. Nintendo seemed prepared for all the comparisons to 3d land because in almost every interview I've seen they quickly state that the game is actually taking inspiration from just about every game in the series including the galaxy games. I'm sure there will be alot of creativity in the level design and EAD Tokyo hasn't let me down yet. When watching the IGN live demo I noticed the death theme was the same as the one in Super Mario Bros. 3.

Personally, I think they should have launched with this instead of New Super Mario Bros Wii U. If they had, I think people would have been more excited about it. After getting two New Super Mario Bros and Super Mario 3D Land, another non-epic scale Mario game just seems...routine.

Looks great, but as a 3DS but not Wii U owner, nothing about this says "I should get a Wii U to play this." Instead it says "well, I can get kind of the same experience if I just buy Super Mario 3D Land for the system I already have."

Ok, fair enough but what does everyone want or expect from a Mario platformer? Honestly, can someone explain that to me?

I disagree. They are taking the same 2d design philosophy and applying it to this game like 3d land but taking a step further with better scope. Galaxy games and SM64 feel and look different than this and play nothing like the 2d marios.

Galaxy is nothing like 64 and Sunshine, it's a big first step into putting 2D Mario in 3D, 3D Land is just a step further. Galaxy had mostly linear level progression and focused on abstract levels to create more "pure" platforming. It has more in common with 3D Land and World than with 64.

I can guarantee you if this was Galaxy 3 or something similar, I'd be all over this game.

I'm glad it's not. I really wanted something different. Nintendo changes stuff, but sometimes not nearly enough to make the experience feel like a new game. Multiplayer changes everything about 3D Mario.

I wonder if the reaction would be so middling if the camera was set behind Mario, instead of at an overhead-ish view. The game, and the levels themselves, look pretty similar to the ones in Galaxy IMO. You can really get a sense of it in that developer video where they start moving the camera around.
