Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

ok, new favourite demo I think (Until CCP hopefully releases their EVR demo - please!)

titans of space. Sit back and enjoy the ride but its really nicely done.

http://www.crunchywood.com/

I checked this out last night. It's really awesome. It even has positional tracking with the hydra. The drift compensation is really good too, whatever their 'look up, look left, etc' bit at the beginning does.

mine just arrived, can't use it until later though :(

edit: oh and zero customs charges in UK, so they must be sending them out from within europe now

Brilliant.

For those waiting, you can track your delivery on the UPS website with your order number (drop the first zero, so 45XXX etc).

Nice. Disabled people getting jiggy with it.
Bosch: Well so far I only had positive reactions, and that really gives me extra energy and excitement for this project. One of the more unexpected comments I got was from the disabled community, where a caregiver said that these erotic VR experiences could be an amazing asset to help disabled people obtain a more exciting sex life.
Obvious sex jokes aside, that is one side of realistic VR that I did not really think about until now: showing disabled folks places they could not visit otherwise, e.g. mountain climbing, skydiving etc.
Should be a very lucrative field to invest into right now.

Yep. Virtual sight-seeing (safaris, landmarks, etc) of real and fictional environments could also be huge. Bunches of people would be into that. Hell, that ended up being the most appealing thing about Avatar for me (it certainly wasn't the story). I felt like I was transported to another place, experiencing an off-world safari, and it was pretty great.

I'm really eager to see what people come up with and looking forward to the consumer version of the Rift. It's the single most interesting gaming related development for me, nothing else is close.

Yep it does also help deaf people. I can hear the sound/noise (with hearing aids) but I cannot tell where is it from, so I usually look around rapidly to find where it is. Any FPS with a pad or mouse can be difficult or too slow to look around. With this Rift, I can look around like what I do in real life.

I'm glad there is a way to get better accessible in the physical, whereas the gaming had become more inaccessible for me such thing like lack of subtitle, online voice chat, ...

I saw that the order numbers being shipped is just in the 40000's still, why the hell is it going so slow to get these babies out? Are they making these by hand from scratch or something?

Yep my social life and my fitness life will definitely be over once the consumer version releases.

Yeah, I think there will be tendencies of shifting parts of life to VR for some.. But I have to say that when I tried the devkit the low resolution came to me as a bigger shock than I expected. It was really rough, which is, like you hinted at, a problem for going all the way. So I'm excited for the consumer version, and with added body tracking option it will be...almost too good.. I'm sure..

What country?

I'm order 44xxx, order still in Processing, no UPS email either.
I was UK order 44xxx; I received an email 5th June saying my order will be advancing to processing. It turned up by surprise this morning.

EDIT: Oculus site still says processing even though it has arrived.

I've spent the most time in Minecraft so far. Things that really blew my mind:
  • Walking up to a block. Feels like it's right in front of you, and they are MUCH larger than you'd think.
  • Standing at the base of a tall building and looking up. The sense of scale is incredible.
  • Pressing F1 to bring up the GUI (this is cool in itself), and then using the head tracking + mouse click to place blocks.
  • Walking down a narrow and low tunnel. It really feels like the walls and ceilings are close.
  • Standing in a 1-block deep lake. I found myself keeping my hands high up to keep them out of the water; it really felt like I was standing waist high in water.
Took a while for my brain to adjust to the whole thing, and using the mouse to aim = instant motion sickness. Using simple WASD and head aiming was fine though, just limits your movement. The 'forward' direction should gradually shift towards where you're looking while moving really.

And just generally, the resolution is insanely low, but once your brain gives in and accepts you're actually in the game, you actually stop noticing this so much. Honestly, the whole experience is hard to describe, but revolutionary is probably the best single word I can think of. General tips for hype though: expect the resolution to be horrific. Expect to be a little disappointed at first. But stick with it and there will be a moment where it all just 'clicks' and you're sucked in.

Have you tried tracking it through the UPS site to check if it is on the way?
What UPS site? You can't track a UPS package without a UPS tracking number, as far as I am aware. My package presumably hasn't shipped yet and has no tracking number. I even tried putting the order number as a tracking number but it's invalid, and I would be a little surprised if UPS actually added support for that.

Is there just one main fan mod for Minecraft with the Rift, or multiple ones?

I assume Jeb decided it was too difficult for them to do the Rift or not worth the effort, so I'm glad fans added support.

sooo, how do you set this thing up exactly? it's my fifth screen now connected to this pc, so far ive unplugged one, disabled surround, enabled activate all displays. the rift now shows the desktop, i've fiddled with the adjustment of how far your eyes sit from the lenses and well....it looks weird. how do you get the games to start on the rift without messing about with changing primary screen etc? and are there any other adjustments?

ideally you want to duplicate your main desktop to the rift, and set the rift itself as your main display. that way when you launch a game, it will launch on the rift, and any vsync you choose to apply will apply to the rift, not your main monitor.

1920x1200 is the 'best' resolution to use for that desktop, other than when playing Valve's games which require you set your desktop resolution to 1280 x 800 for some reason.

Wow that was amazing, TF2 and Tuscanny demos were miles better than I'd thought.

wait until you try something more atmospheric like HL2, Doom 3, Ocean Rift, etc etc.

it started working miraculously and now i've rigged up some dodgy ultramon setup, so should be ok but i'll try that resolution trick, will need to add a custom resolution tho ye?

got the tuscany demo working, two things, can you change the fov as it seems too close? and the major thing, when i look around the image is just static with no in game head movement how do i fix that?

that sounds like the demo isn't detecting your Rift properly. try plugging it into a different usb port. the Tuscany demo will not use the correct FOV if it doesn't see the rift input device, and obviously you won't be able to look around.

tried different usb port and same thing, tried demo again just now and now it shows a black screen except the writing telling me to configure the hydra, gah. can't even setup mirroring lol wtf

it shows it's detected ok?

anyway it's eating into serious drinking time now, will sort it tomorrow...if i can :/

Had the pleasure to try out the HD-prototype with the 1080p-Panel at E3.
It was a very early prototype, still with lots of parts from the original devkit in place and as of yet there are no official plans of releasing it as a devkit. It uses a 6-inch-1080p-Panel instead of the 7-inch-1280x800-panel.

Due to the fact the kit used the same lenses as the old version, the viewing angle was noticabley lower- Especially at the sides black borders were noticable. It do not bother me a lot but I think it should be noted. With a 7-inch-screen or new lenses that warp the image accordingly the percieved resolution might be lower than what I saw.

But the good news is: The HD-prototype is a huge step forward! The screen-door-effect is nearly vanished. Only If I really tried, I could see the pixel-grid and overall the higher resolution very much improved the whole experience. I saw the UE4-Engine-Demo and ws walking around that snowy mountain with that lava-cave, the Sauron-Ripoff and planetary model. I could try it with the old devkit before and the difference is stunning. Texture-Detail is much more visible. Effects like lighting, snowflakes and shadows are much more defined and the view-distance is kind of higher because details do not get los in the low resolution that easily.

Overall it was an impressive demo and it left me really assured about where Oculus VR is going with this. These guys are steadily improving the product and the consumer-product, whenever it might come, should be really really good. Hopefully they even amp up the resoution until then. I am surprised what kind of difference it made and am looking forward to future improvements.

Just one main one - minecrift on mtbs3d. Currently up to 0.27, they are detaching head look from body movement (not quite there yet) and positional audio. That's on top of a depth dependent cursor, all options now in the GUI, and generally tons of adjustability.

Also fully forge and optifine compatible

thank you for the impressions. most insightful.

Thank you kind mrklaw. *goes back to obsessively checking order status every 2 days*

Speaking of which, it would be nice if there were a way to check order status without requesting a new email link each time.

Go to ups.com, select 'tracking', choose 'track by reference', put in the order number, country and zip code and voila.

Sorry I couldn't get back to you, it's like Hzoltan says, just go to ups.com and enter your order number without the leading zero. You may have to narrow down the search by entering the approximate shipping date and the destination.

Oh, and I just got the shipping confirmation by email. So it should definitely get here by monday.

Got my shipping email this morning, went to check on UPS and it's been delivered yesterday at my office (in France). And no one told me I had a parcel waiting for me, so now I have to wait until Monday.
Meh.

I just started downloading some demos, so far I have: Ocean Rift, Titans of Space, Alone in the Rift and the Roller Coaster demo. Anything else I should try? (Already have the Valve games)

Blue marble, parrot coaster, minecraft (if you have the game)

Regarding the US batch that is caught up by US Customs:

"Containers from the factory are coming in once ore twice a month to each distribution center (US, UK and HK). Those dev kits get through customs and then get to the distribution center where they labeled and shipped to the customers.

Therefore, if the next container arrives prior to the one that's got held up gets cleared, assuming it will clear the customs without a problem, will replace the units in the affected container, since they are unlabeled.

P.S. Orders switch to processing status usually right before container is about to arrive to the distribution center, so they can prepare the shipping labels ahead of time. Processing status also means that the information for the shipment has been sent to the distribution center for shipment and will remain in that status until the tracking information is supplied back to Oculus."

so i got mirroring working fairly easily by swapping to hdmi and changing card

just tried doom 3 bfg and tuscany, head tracking still doesn't work :/ just a static image that follows you around, tried 4 usb ports aswell, anything else to try?

and Doom 3.

Doom 3 is awesome in VR. Probably the best looking and most atmospheric thing I've tried so far. The environmental detail really shines against something like HL2 that used a lot of good texturing to look good. That texture detail is lost in the Rift dev kit, but the lighting and geometry in Doom 3's environments looks better than ever.

Nice. Disabled people getting jiggy with it.

As someone who has been in a wheelchair his entire life... let me just say that Oculus Rift isn't required for that....

That said... my wife has benefited from several raging boners which Oculus Rift has provided me. ;-) DAT MINECRAFT!

Incidentally, I have been approached by Neil over at Meant-to-be-seen-3d, regarding writing articles specifically from the perspective of a disabled individual, using OR, and explaining just how "special" and life-altering this tech can really be.

I didn't know about the track by reference thing but yeah, UPS cannot locate my shipment. I'm pretty sure the units are all stuck outside the US until whatever customs thing is resolved. People in other countries will keep getting them though. =P

I got the same thing, but if you change the radio button to "Mail Innovations" instead and, if you haven't already done so, drop the leading zero on the order number, it should return some result. It isn't very useful though, since at this point it will probably just say "Shipment information received." Better than nothing, I guess.
