Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

I was afraid teenagers putting seizure-generators or something would be the thing to make someone die while wearing the Rift, but a fishbowl full of spiders would probably be even more effective. =(

Well, I backed the Omni. I really couldn't help it, it seems like it will make the virtual worlds so much more immersive. I'm also looking at the Delta Six, a gun peripheral.

They have updated that they are working with Omni to make sure it is suitable for use in VR. Right now it only supports motion tracking and not positional tracking like you might have seen in the Nathan Andrews Half Life 2 video on Vimeo.

I sent the project creator a message about implementing positional tracking, and he responded:

We're still tweaking and experimenting with the prototype models, and we want to make sure we get it absolutely right before we disclose more details. We understand the concerns about positional tracking vs movement tracking, and we've got it covered. The prototype displayed on the home page encompasses the work we've done so far, but is not the final design. The Delta Six will be designed to meet the needs of every gamer. With the SDK that will be publicly available later this year, there will be even more room for growth as we invite the community to help enhance the user experience.

Thank you for your support!

The Kickstarter also assures a 30 day money back guarantee when you receive it, so I guess there's no risk? The lowest pledge to get the gun is $159.

Only 56 hours left in the campaign, so I thought some of you might want to know. I think I'll probably end up backing it. Separate head, body (movement), and gun tracking seems like the holy grail of VR first person gaming.

IndieCade to feature four Oculus Rift games at E3 2013

The IndieCade booth at E3 2013 will feature four Oculus Rift games in addition to other "emerging platforms" such as Sifteo Cubes, Wii U, PlayStation Move, PS Vita and Kinect, according to a press release.

IndieCade regularly promotes independent game makers by showcasing unique and interesting titles at industry events. E3 attendees will have the chance to play atmospheric psychological puzzle game The Recital, which allows players to embody a pianist, and Sound Self, a game that requires Oculus Rift users to navigate tunnels of light and shapes.

Other titles include Irrational Exuberance, an exploration of a "mystery playground at the end of the world," and If a Tree Screams in the Forest, which sends players walking through strange wilderness.

Check out our hands-on preview of the Oculus Rift from GDC. Polygon will be reporting live from E3 next week.

Good News :)

To be honest, while that would be cool, I'm much more excited about the potential the Rift has for getting away from the FPS standard 'you must have a gun in hand' gameplay.

"You're receiving this email because your Oculus order will be advancing to "Processing" status in the next 24 to 48 hours."

Happy days! : D

Oh and I'm in the UK - Order: 044xxx

I really hope there are some consumer model spec Oculus Rift hardware at E3. I really want to know if a 1080p screen will lessen the 'screen door' effect, and by how much.

Just got the mail that my order will be advancing to processing as well. Order number in the 45k's in austria. Time to start downloading some demos I guess.

it'll completely depend on the panel. i expect they'll pick wisely, but you could pick a 1080p display with a stronger screen door effect than the one we currently have.

I'm probably going crazy because I can't find the post (or he deleted it because it was wrong), but I read on Reddit, order #20xxx just arrived coming from processing last week (5/29). This is in San Francisco too.

Super excited last week's last processing batch might get it by the weekend!

Question about the Unity Pro trial included with the Rift (125 days)... on the site you're already offered a 1 month free trial of Unity Pro (and I think Android Pro as well, which I wouldn't mind to tinker with my Ouya). Can you use that, then activate the Rift trial code? Or is it just one or the other?

I have a question that I have not seen yet. Do you guys think content created for the developer kit of the Rift will work fine with a consumer version with different hardware? Will changes need to be made to, say, the Half Life 2 implementation to get it to work correctly with a different screen resolution and such? Just wondering since I know the Rift requires the image to be rendered in a certain way and it isn't just the same way as a monitor.

Once they get all the base features implemented into the engine it should just be a matter of dropping in the newest SDK version from oculus and it will take care of the back end work. I would assume then that whatever the iteration of hardware would be able to function under whatever version of the SDK is implemented in the engine, so if when the a rift 2.0 comes out after the initial consumer release and some games don't update the Oculus SDK, people buying the Rift 2.0 would have 1.0 functionality under those conditions

The current Rift SDK already supports different headset model specs, so if the support is implemented correctly it shouldn't be an issue.

I think this was the first girl that I have uploaded trying the Rift. It was a friend of mine's wife.

It's really hard for me to avoid the Omni Kickstarter right now... I just do not think I have the room for it at the moment. But damn it, I want it.

Order status just changed to processing!

Does anyone know how long it takes to go from processing to shipped?

A lot of people who got in on the Kickstarter are saying 2 weeks or so. I've been in processing for about a week and a half now. Hopefully it'll be soon.

I'm considering backing the Omni kickstarter. It's a bit pricey, but it's the missing from a complete immersive experience (besides a better screen, of course).

I'm just worried about the shoes' size.

I can't see quite clearly in this video but how he is dealing with the cable coming out of the rift so that he's able to turn freely without it getting tangled. And what gun is he using? It doesnt look like the Delta rifle thats currently in kickstarter. Also is that Kinect or upcoming Kinect2 i see off to the side thats running the positional tracking.

The setup thats being showed here with Half Life 2 is just about all I could wish for when it comes to full immersion. The Razer Hydra is really limited when your confined to the orb's placement. Even when using the Vireio mod :(

I've been exploring the idea of full body awareness using Oculus Rift + Razer Hydra.

You've got like 4 things attached to your body, you're blind and there are tangled wires all over the place, but shooting that gun in VR is amazing fun.

Anyone mentioned Alone in the Rift yet?

I just played that.

I literally screamed like a little girl while removing the Rift from my head at the end. Horror movies do nothing for me but man was I scared shitless by this game. :lol

One thing I've discovered in my week with the Rift is that playing while standing up makes all the difference in the world. Playing while sitting is okay but as soon as you stand up the immersion level goes through the roof.

This little horror tech demo had the best controls scheme I've tried so far with the Razer Hydra. WASD on the left analog, left/right turning on the right analog and free aiming with your right hand. In this case, you're using a flashlight.

Powerful experience. Highly recommended! And make sure you're playing this one with headphones.

Someone come out with wireless sensors and I'll buy them the rift and that Omni platform thing.
