Oculus Rift - Dev Kit Discussion [Orders Arriving]

Ordered late due to moving countries and lots of other stuff, order num 056xxx, not expecting it any time soon but that just gives me more time to get the horror title I'm planning to a playable state for when it comes.

Are the team fortress hats worth money? I don't play TF and don't care about the hat, but wanted to check before I give it away

I still need to sell my code, but I have no idea how to do it without the high probability of the other person being all "Hey Ebay, this dick never sent me the code" after they've already redeemed it.

I haven't touched my Rift in a couple days either. It's getting to the point where I really either need new content to play...or I should probably sell it lol. I mean, it's awesome, but I've exhausted what's out there and I don't think anything else earth shattering is going to come before the consumer version.

I was just going to use mine for Team Fortress. Not worth paying $800 on EBay just for that.

Team Fortress 2 is really cool on the Rift, but you can't see jack at distances beyond a few feet. It makes aiming at distant targets really difficult.

Are Rift's still in the $800 range on Ebay? Mmm...I'm very tempted. Daddy has wanted one of those 30" monoprice monitors for quite some time now...mmm....

I was hesitant to go with the dev kit model, since the consumer will likely be 1080p, heh. I'd open to trading some stuff on steam for the hat to anyone considering trading it (we could get some sort of reliable hat middle man person fellow).

I'm the opposite, minecraft is great, HL2 and doom 3, war thunder just got official support - who knows how many more games will be adapted before the consumer version comes out? Plus I'm curious to see how people play with different control schemes etc

Sadly, there's nothing on Steam that I'd want.

If it were just an issue of content, I'd probably want to keep it more, but it's also an issue of comfort. I need to add in more padding or something, because it causes quite a bit of discomfort around the forehead/nose area. I think my eyes are also just a bit too far off from each other in terms of vision quality, which leads to some odd image doubling at times. The consumer Rift will probably have far more ways to dial the image in just right than there are on this devkit model, and the lower weight will cause less pressure related issues.

I probably won't sell, just because I hate Ebay and would rather keep it and eat any potential profit instead of rolling the dice and potentially having Ebay bend me over a table, but I'm considering it.

That is to be expected I guess, but as a tech head, I'm going to be irritated by knowing there's a better version out there. Still haven't received my Rift. Wish I could cancel the order and wait for the next version instead.

Mine's been in processing since saturday or so. I didn't mind the wait when it was still at ready but now that something actually happened and I know that it's coming, it's killing me :(

Just an announcement. I doubt you'll be able to actually obtain one within a short period of time.
Where is the announcement? Or is this a reminder that there were plans for an eventual 1080p consumer version since early on? :P

And about processing, I thought pretty much everyone was saying that once it goes to processing, expect at least a 2-week further wait.

Has there been any Oculus Rift related news out of E3 yet? Keep hoping to hear some game support and such.

Guess E3 is so console focused though... :/

E3 hasn't even really started, it's only been the big press conferences. There's a ton of rifts on the floor for various things, as far as I know.

This is pretty big news:
http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/11/4419802/oculus-rift-goes-hd-virtual-reality-cinema

Oculus VR is kicking off E3 with an upgrade to its virtual reality console, the Rift. By simply upgrading its optics from one off-the-shelf cellphone display to another, the company has upgraded the goggles to 1080p — and based on a few minutes of time with Rifts old and new, the upgrade makes a huge difference. Gone is what CEO Brendan Iribe called "the screen-door effect," and everything comes in much sharper and clearer. We played a game rendered in the newly-integrated Unreal Engine 4, and from the snowflakes outside to the large, horned monster inside, details just pop in a way they never did before. It makes the world feel more immersive, more immediate.

The 1080p screen is split in two, so each eye sees a 960 x 1080 portrait display — Iribe said the company was worried about how the switch from landscape to portrait might affect the games, but said he's seen no issues. Nor have they had problems with the games created by the 10,000 developers who now have Oculus Rift dev kits — the SDK is built to scale its resolution, so Iribe said it's only the beginning. As cellphone displays get better, so does the Rift, and the company gets to outsource its R&D to Apple, Samsung, and the like.

This thing keeps sounding better and better. They are talking about the possibility of releasing dev kits for an HD version also.

1080p + smaller screen, the screen door effect should be way less with this :D

Here is the 1080p Version, you can see that there is a smaller screen inside

I guess Feep had insider info he didn't want to share, that looks cool. :P

I finally got shipment 6 out of 6 for my new PC so I can start assembling it tonight. Hopefully within a week the Rift goes out of processing and I can add it into the mix at the perfect time.

Love the sound of that 1080p Rift. Just a little bit of a bummer considering I'm still waiting for my dev kit and there is already a better version out there, but oh well. Not available yet anyway. That's the risk I took buying bleeding edge unfinished tech.

Been stuck on processing for two weeks now. I'm begging you Palmer, for the love of everything holy, please let this next batch ship out tomorrow. PLEEEAAASEEE. Thanks.

I wish they could release that UE4 tech demo. I get why they can't though.

I'm showing a demo for Oculus Rift at the Indiecade booth, as are a few other indie devs. Hopefully some games press stops by! :)

EDIT: Also I really want to check out that 1080p Rift. I'll try to take a look and report back tomorrow.

Yea, who knows, maybe in the near future (or as a pack in demo for the consumer version?)

Anyway, in case anyone else happened to be in the same desperate boat as me earlier today, it turns out the reason this next batch hasn't shipped yet is that it got held up in customs on it's way over from China. They hope to "have it sorted out by the end of this week." So hopefully they'll be arriving on our doorsteps starting early next week.

glad mine is shipping now too =) Anyone has any information on problems with german customs? Does the Rift have a "CE" label?

can't wait to finally get my hands on it

It's not suitable for shipping though, they literally hacked a 1080p screen into the old devkit. The optics are still from the larger screen so you get less FoV. Once they've settled on the screen size they will use they'll need to redo the optics.

Norm ("that guy from Tested") with Nate, another stellar interview:

Some tidbits:

(On resolution) "This [1080p display] is sort of the minimum bar, it's gonna be at least this good, if not better."

(On positional tracking) "We're not talking a wide, huge Kinect type thing, but something that lets you lean down and examine things in the game world. We're making great progress on that front, and we're hoping that we can share a future prototype for something like that down the road as we move toward the consumer launch."

Haven't watched it yet, but sounds like they're using an absolute system with an external sensor for it by that description. Interesting, probably more accurate but wouldn't allow as much flexibility as an integrated solution + more effort to setup/maintain/use.

For people not reading it in the own thread

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/12/playstation-4-oculus-rift/

Sony Computer Entertainment head of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is a big Oculus Rift fan, it turns out. "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he told us in an interview this morning at E3 2013. Whether the PlayStation 4 will support it is another question. "No, it doesn't," Yoshida told us. Not yet, that is.

When we asked whether the company's planning on offering support in the future, he only offered a "No comment" with a big smile. The picture of the retail Oculus Rift is potentially a bit clearer now, especially given this week's addition of an HD version of the headset. We'll be sure to keep on Sony about Oculus support on the PlayStation 4 as the year goes on.

Best E3 news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.roadtovr.com/2013/06/12/wicked-paradise-erotic-virtual-reality-game-for-oculus-rift-6494

Road to VR did an interview on the upcoming erotic game "Wicked Paradise". I must say, it looks pretty impressive already. And that's with placeholder models and animation. Obviously NSFW.

Saw this on 4chan, was going to post it here.

This is the modest, tangible, practical beginning of virtual reality girlfriends and vr sex. This is huge.

In 10 years the concept of "forever alone" will not exist.

The entire sexual dynamics of our species are going to change.

My 43xxx order to Japan has moved to processing.

The last update email from Oculus said the NA and EU orders are being held up by customs but it didn't mention asian orders so it sounds like I may get mine before the US/EU people. Especially if it's shipping from China. Really hope I can get it before my vacation begins on the 24th.

It really probably is the minimum bar (1080p). In war thunder the sense of flying is great (although the scaling makes you seem like a giant body in an even bigger plane), but you can't see shit in front of you. Is that grey blob a plane? Good guy or bad guy? Who knows

Would love a pilotwings like that though, with more terrain to contend with. Jetpack could be mad :)
