What's up with all the negativity around The Last of Us now?

Most of their games have featured excellent, well designed gameplay mechanics. Uncharted 1 was rough, but the rest of their games this gen (and their previous games) are top notch.

Personally, I found no meaningful difference between the gameplay of Uncharted and Uncharted 2. I didn't like the gameplay of either one. I don't really find the gunplay all that satisfying. Plus, Naughty Dog likes to have really reckless AI on bullet sponge enemies. The end result is that killing bad guys is more frustrating then fun.

Bugs and glitches definitely need to be fixed, but other complains are what make them games i.e. no game has a perfect A.I.

If you're giving a game a 10, it better have some damn good AI.

Makes me wonder if the cinematic and story elements were getting 10s, rather than the game.

People expect perfection. They don't get it and they lose their mind.

which is funny because most of the reviews don't actually read like its perfection. It's a perfectly serviceable action stealth shooter with good atmosphere and audio or something.

101/10!!!!!

People really should read the actual reviews!

And always go into a game expecting the worst, otherwise you'd be disappointed!

For now their is zero common similarity between last of us and uncharted.

Gunplay is much better and enemy are not bullet sponges

People like to be combative and disagreeable for its own sake, especially the vocal minority. I'm not saying that's what's happening here though, since I haven't played the game or really read any of the reviews.

The game never looked interesting to me. Then again, I haven't been a part of the backlash because I haven't really paid attention to it.

This is how I feel after buying my first console game in six months, rushing home excited to play and just stopping by for a quick look at whats cooking on GAF.....

AI issues are immersion breaking but not game breaking.

Game has fantastic AI, though i can agree with some why they dont like friendly ai detected with in strealth mode

I'm trying to read this thread and see where the actual complaints are, but it's just people talking about the psychology of being disappointed by hyped things.

The complaints are graphics, ai and the save bug?

Save bug is major, but graphics/ai seem good in videos. I want to hear moar of the hate. I want to understand. I expected more complaints about the game being more depressing/heavy than fun, to be honest.

Make up your own mind. People have been trying to tell me FFXIII sucks for 3 years, but if you enjoy the game, you enjoy it. I honestly only trust probably 3 people's opinions on games in the whole world, and I talk to none of them on the internet.

That said, I kind of suspected that The Last of Us was overrated all along, and I said so in the last thread. I'm not saying it's bad, because I'm sure it's not. But almost all the reviews talked about things in this order: 1) Story, 2) Graphics, 3) Music, -------------> 4) Gameplay.

Jim Sterling gave The Last of Us a 10/10, and he gave Vanquish a 4/10.

I dunno, I haven't heard much negativity myself. Usually there's that overhype backlash, but it's pretty tame this time around, especially for GAF.

Haven't played the game myself yet, so I can't make any comments. Bioshock Infinite on the other hand definitely deserved some of the overyhype backlash.

Nope.

And i remember mentioning all this with you in the review thread where you dismissed many reviewers.

Surprisingly a few reviewers were in the OT as well discussing the gameplay.

Overhype (which doesn't mean a game is bad, but that people set their standards unrealistically high).

Also, people love being "that guy" to nitpick a critically acclaimed game/movie/restaurant/food/celebrity/anything that can possibly be acclaimed. What you end up with is a lot of "those guys" posting on forums (because really, "those guys" thrive on letting people know how hip they are for disagreeing with the mainstream).

Also, those who have negative experiences (with ANYTHING) tend to be much more vocal than those who have positive or as expected experiences. No one is going to hop on a message board and say "Guys! My toaster works as expected." But if some people have a broken toaster, oh my God, forumgeddon.

Other possible explanations:

- Not being the game they wanted ND to make, so they get mad and disappointed
- Not controlling how they wanted it to control, even if the controls are fine, so they get mad and disappointed.
- Taking one instance of a bad experience (an AI stupidly running into the open, for example) and extrapolating that out as "the AI is bad."
- People expecting the game to be Call of Duty Zombies mode.

And of course, there are some people who are being 100% honest and genuine about not liking the game.

Nothing else needs to be said. This post should be in the OP.

I didn't read all the posts in this thread, but can someone actually link to these "complaints"? I finished the game yesterday, and i loved everything about it. Naughty Dog seriously delivered! I would rate this game just a lil bit better then Bioshock Infinite.

Anyways... I would like to see these complaints because i just don't believe it.

For the record, the Citizen Kane of gaming is Super Mario 64. No other game captures such a radical change in the industry for me.

It's not a bad pick, not a bad pick at all. But you're on a forum where people think the Galaxies are better than 64.. *snort*.. lol..

To be clear, I am disgusted with the game breaking autosave bug over the quality of the game itself (which I haven't yet played). Anybody who played the game at all should have caught that. I don't know if these reviewers are sitting and watching movies of the game being played and basing reviews off that or what. There is simply no explanation.

A game still can be, and should be, rated 10/10 with a bug like that in place. The assumption pre-release is either:

1.) It'll be fixed prior to launch
2.) It'll be fixed soon after launch

I'd much rather video game reviewers review based on the quality of the game itself and not X bug that happened to (unfortunately) pop up around the time of its release.

I didn't realize there was "negativity" surrounding The Last of Us now, other than the auto save glitch.

It's bound to disappoint some people, but I'm loving it. I can't wait to play online. I'm just waiting in case someone decides to ruin the single player story for me.

All of that universal praise was from reviewers..the only people on the planet whose opinions on video games you shouldn't trust. Now the customers will speak. Also, it's literally release day..how could there possibly be a giant majority opinion formed yet..

To be fair I don't trust most customers either.

Many of the people talking here negatively has not and wont play the game.Take a look to the post history of some of them...

What post history has to do with not thinking that the game is 96% metacritic worthy? do we really have that many guys here that hate the PS3 so much to go in the OT and complain about a game they haven't played? I don't think so.

We'll see plenty of different opinions - others are positively biased others negatively and others will just say what their experience with the game was, just like every other highly praised AAA game.

So everyone bashing Arthur Gies for his review... He was actually right

No way. The game is exceptional. Its his loss for playing against how it wants to be played.

I'm playing it on hard and I love every bit of it. Reminds me of the killboxes in Uncharted 1. And killzone 2.

Just a great map in front of you. for you puzzle through.

I dont get how people can say it has "clunky" gunplay. You probably just suck at games.

If it doesnt have COD controls its automatically clunky? Joel isn't some legendary sharp shooter. Swaying while aiming is realistic. Shit is dope.

Its a better game than Uncharted 2.

Yeah, I don't get it either. If people want auto-aim choose "easy" it puts an auto-aim option on for people use to having the game do the work for them.

But Arthur Gies didn't write a review...

Anyway, I'm not saying the game is definitely amazing or terrible, but this thread seems like the place where people who believe game reviewers overhype everything can find something for their confirmation bias, the same way the original review thread confirmed the beliefs of those excited for the game.

Love me some Tom Chick. Looked it up, here's a link if anyone wants to read: http://www.quartertothree.com/fp/2013/06/12/the-last-of-us-has-real-heart-but-not-much-else/

Thanks for the review... it was the first one I've read for the game. I was going to wait until Last of Us went to sub-$30 around Christmas time to pick it up anyways, but the review almost makes me think I'd be better off watching a Let's Play of it. Is there a demo of the game? Maybe that will help me make my decision.

LOL at all the blame at the end consumer. Yeah it's totally our fault that game reviewers don't seem to care about AI or gameplay.

People hyping it up way too much. It's better to keep expectations in check so you aren't disappointed :). If MS's initial reveal showed me anything, it was that.

if anything the backlash solidifies that The Last of Us, a zombie video game developed by Naughty Dog and discussed at length on video game discussion website NeoGAF.com, is without a doubt the crowning achievement of not only the 21st century, but ostensibly of all time.

The negativity is done by a vocal minority. Please, people who are talking about dumb A.I. knows not of what they speak. The A.I. is clearly miles ahead of other stealth games I've played ever. The allies not being detected by the enemies works out in the players favor. You know how much backlash there would be had Ellie be someone that can be seen? TONS. People would complain you can't stealth because "the little bitch keeps getting in the way!" Yea, the a.i. is good.
