Angry Joe: Major Nelson Interview (Xbox One) E3 2013

Seems like there was a question hard hitting enough to get the PR handler involved.

Do you have links to other E3 interviews where that happens all the time? I would love to watch them.

No, because it doesn't happen. That's exactly what I'm saying.

Current trends are showing the prevalence of digital downloads, but not the monopolization of it. Physical media are just as relevant. Both can exist, you know.

Yes, both can exist. It's just that pretty soon, we will more than likely get a major digital download only system. I can already tell.

Again all everyone is telling you digital isn't the future its the its recent past and the present. IT ISN'T NEW OR THE FUTURE!!!!!

I never said it was new.

All I said was that current trends show that more people are moving towards digital due to convenience. A major digital download only console won't come until people are ready for it.

The Reddit interview had good hard questions and it was conducted in a far more succint and professional manner, IMO.
With zero follow-ups and anything Major Nelson said was immediately accepted as truth.

No, because it doesn't happen. That's exactly what I'm saying.
It also means that the PR handler getting involved is evidence that this is more hard hitting than what you usually get.

I have no desire at all to be 100% digital in gaming. It's not cheaper on consoles and even before all this MS DRM stuff, it's hard to actually own it. Why on earth is this a preferred method to anyone other than complete minimalists? I also prefer real books but don't care as much about music. And I rarely buy movies.

The Reddit interview was horrible.

Major Nelson gave some spin answer where he barely even answered and the interviewer just nodded her head happily and didn't press him on anything.

How are they not connected?

Do you not see how TONS of people would never have to buy games if there were no restrictions on disc games on top of having something like the family share plan for ALL games; retail and digital?

Some people would be able to go through the whole gen without buying any games just as long as they knew the right people -- and they would be able to go through out the whole gen doing so legally.
PS3 has no restrictions on disc games and although limited, account sharing is possible for digital titles (even full games). People still buy PS3 games. PS4 will work in exactly the same way.

Well done Joe. You handled the interview the best you could under the circumstance. When Larry took the mic out of your hand, that as very odd. I don't think it went the way Larry expected it to.

There's a picture of what looks like Microsoft's own E3 broadcast. Did anyone see this or know where it aired?

Edit:

Looks like Morgan Webb is on the set. Is that what she's been up to since the death of G4?

Edit 2:

LOL, Joe is saying the the defunct Attack of the Show crew hosted the Xbox E3 stuff....

How was he unprepared? He had pages of pre-written notes!

How he operates on the E3 showroom is that he tries to sneak interviews with publishers by asking them on the spot.

He does schedule a lot of his interviews, but some of them are totally on the spot. In this case, where he wanted to interview MS personnel, he caught Major Nelson in between breaks. He had interview questions in his backpack for a possible interview that may have come up.

In this case, it is unprepared in the sense that he didn't know when an interview would come up or if one would, but prepared with fan questions.

Not because he was low on time and had a show to go to? Remember, this was an unscheduled interview.

Yeah, what I'm saying is despite his preparation, he didn't actually drill into the core topics at hand, which is in complete contrast to his mission.

I'm not talking about cutting the interview short at ~13 minutes which was due to time and is fine, even though it would have been nice to give AJ a 2 minute warning, I'm talking about the 7 minute intervention.

Isn't it only 2 accounts though in terms of sharing?
It is 2 for PS3, 2 for Vita. It used to be 5 for PS3.
And depending on the titles that meant 5 players could play the same game concurrently. This was a 2006 feature, so it can't really be sold as a 2013 and future feature.

And it won't do as well as a console with options for physical media. Consumers like choice.

Consumers also like convenience too.

Would iPod have done better if it had a CD player? Maybe.

Overall though, as long as enough people are reading for it, the convenience can be a major selling point to many.

Wait did I miss something here? MN says "Do you not get the value or the family plan... <muffled> that you now only need 1 xbox gold subscription?"

I thought this was a family group that you selected, but they all had to have gold already. Have i not just been keeping up to date on the news?

Ouya is all digital.
PSPgo is all digital.

I don't think the ouya will take the market by storm and the PSPgo certainly didn't.

My Ipad is all digital but I don't mind. I usually pay $5 for a game and that is usually because I'm curious and have money to burn. I've never bought a full fledged console title digital. Only digital titles I buy are on PC or smaller games on PSN/XBLA. Console gaming to me involves a cartridge or disc that I have to put into a system. I don't find anything out dated or burdensome about that. Also, I'm glad I can play my Sega Saturn, SNES, DC, GCN, etc.

I don't want a console whose future is up in the air, literally, we're dependent on clouds with Xbox One.

Yeah, what I'm saying is despite his preparation, he didn't actually drill into the core topics at hand, which is in complete contrast to his mission.

It is a shame, but I put it down to Joe's inexperience with it really. Although the core topics weren't detailed, it was evident he was progressing in the interview to getting to that point.

Holy shit at him grabbing the mic from Joe to ask if he was on the development team. Not a great interview from Joe (for reasons he went into) but these MS guys need to realize how stuff like that looks.

There were a couple people talking about PSN game/account sharing, which is roughly the equivalent of this MS family plan. With PSN game sharing all you do is split a single account. It's as simple as that. Any 2 people anywhere can use a single PSN account on two different PS3s. It's 2 different people with the same single account activated on each of their PS3 systems. You can even do it with an account with PS Plus. I could share an account with someone and get every digital game I want essentially for half off that way (each person pays half the cost). Both people can play offline or multiplayer or whatever (with a very few exceptions of games which cannot be shared) So it's not very restrictive at all imo for whoever was saying that it was.

Anyway MS just needs to release a FAQ written by someone that actually knows what the hell is going on with the console. Why is this not already done? I imagine either because the answers are negative and/or they still don't know themselves.

Consumers also like convenience too.

Would iPod have done better if it had a CD player? Probably.

Overall though, as long as enough people are reading for it, the convenience can be a major selling point to many.

Let people choose if they want convenience or not. Again, people like choice. They don't like it if they get forced to it. That would be unconvenient for them again.

I have no idea. The statements we do have are contradictory, and people are just assuming the rest.

Would iPod have done better if it had a CD player? Maybe.
Do ipods have to go online before allowing you to play your own MP3s? Does your bluray player?

Why games? The answer has nothing to do with convenience for the customer.

The only digital system that has flourished is Steam, and that's because of its competition. When a person buys a Xbone for all digital consumption, they only have one marketplace to purchase their games from, and that's directly from MS.

Buying physical media is also convenient, by the way. Look at Amazon.

I guess you're right. I did love how he started almost each question with "OK, one last question..." I watch all his interviews... I just wish he would actually do what he sets out to do in the first place, that's all.

MAJOR system. PSPgo was a different version of the PSP. Ouya isn't major.

And that's perfectly fine. I'm not trying to convince anyone. I've simply stated what's better for me personally.

I have an 80 Mbps connection and want to put it to better use. I'm ready to go digital for my games.

I wonder if people will actually start 'selling' their Xbox LIVE accounts for the game libraries.

Gold and PS+ are now both "per console" not per person.

Can we all agree this has got to be the worst PR work ever done for any product in the history of mankind? I'm beyond words for what Microsoft is doing in terms of mixed messages right now, just unbelievable.

There has to be worse... can't think of any at the moment but there has to be.

Yes. It was 5 people originally, but Sony reduced the number down to 2. Probably because publishers didn't like it. Maybe they won't like the family program either and MS either cuts it down too or allows publishers to restrict it? We simply don't know at this point, but we shouldn't get too hopeful here. There is a reason MS didn't come out at their unveiling or the E3 press conference announcing it, since it could be their best feature if it really works that way.

Let's wait for MN blog post hopefully outlining the policy in detail and all the restrictions and what control publishers have.

so 2 people cant play at the same time using the family share plan? that sucks

edit: great interview

That's not a bad prediction honestly, I see people on Steam through forums doing that already.

Depending on how resales will work, that can go wrong. What if Person A sells their account to a Person B and then Person A trades in their games associated to their account? Does Person B get fucked over?

Its been confirmed that we can still share each acc on 2 consoles on ps4 (just like it is now), with absolutely no restrictions (as it is now) and that alone, is much better than Family share.

Do you not see how tons of people would never have to buy games if this family sharing plan worked the way they hope/think it will? You could go through the entire generation of Xbone or any previous console without buying games and done so legally, so what is your point? Sony nor Steam have ever done anything similar to family share plan because there's no expectation for it, customers understand it's a no win proposition for developers, especially indie developers who's digital only releases are normally protected from second-hand sales.

Wouldn't locally lead to pirating?

Are you insane? Has 30+ years of gaming consoles with locally tradeable games lead to piracy? What are you even talking about?

So, you are saying that I shouldn't believe that the family share plan is true... even though MS has been talking about it more and more these past weeks?

I didn't say you shouldn't belive it. What I said, or at least meant, was that all things equal you were leaning towards a PS4, until you heard about the family share plan. The only reason that would push you to Xbone is because you think it will allow you, or your friends and family members, to purchase fewer games. This flies in the face of what developers and publishers want.

Damn, so many loopholes in this system. And incomplete information.
