I'm going on a retro buying spree due to recent events. Anybody else?

I just met a guy from CL who said he had a bag of NES games he'd sell me for $20. Drove an hour, got it, saw a couple Mega Man 2's and a Super C on top and knew it was worth what I paid. Kept digging and had Ninja Gaiden 3 and Duck Tales 2.

The hunt is awesome.

damn, yeah that would've made my day, too...nice one man!

I'm the opposite.

i totally get not wanting to revisit many 8-bit SHMUPS, and not to carry over from the other thread but i see your points as well. there's stuff i get to play digitally that i realistically wouldn't have otherwise, and i'm grateful for that too. it's not just about what gets to go on my shelf, there's many experiences ill take however i can get (Yakuza 5, Way of the Samurai 4 etc as digital ones)

Yeah, but at the same time I recently got Recca for NES/3DS/VC...a game I've read about for a few years so I was quite pleased to check it out, even if I only play it for a few minutes here and there. Always hidden gems.

I'm really moving into arcade stuff. It was always the holy grail stuff when I was growing up. That is where we went to see stuff unimaginable at home. I just spent a few hours looking at Cabs today. Thinking I'm going to add one or two or three more. The idea of having a dedicated game room filled with a half dozen candies, a Vewlix, a UFO Catcher, and Apollo 13 Pinball Machine in the corner as well as 16-bit gaming and shmups and fighters is pretty much my idea of heaven.

Same here, picked up Viewtiful Joe finally, gonna get around to buying Chibi Robo, Custom Robo and Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3 soon as well.

Sweet! I also got Viewtiful Joe (again). I had it back in the day and played it quite a bit. So I go to replay it, put it on adult, and just CAN'T get past the first boss lol. I need to reset it to kids and try again--- I wonder what I played it on back then.

I still need to get 2, don't know if I ever played that (though I think I did, just a little)

Edit: oh yeah I also got Zelda TP for probably twice what it would have cost for Wii because fuck waggle and mirroring the world :P another game in my backlog, skipped that Zelda for some reason

I did that when Nintendo delisted the Donkey Kong Country games. I bought the originals and started collecting other SNES games.

Be careful, it's a rabbit hole you're about to go down.

Last week I got a used Super Nintendo and some games for 15 bucks.

Some of the games are crap. I did get Super Mario World, Super Mario All Stars, another Super Mario game that escapes my memory, and Street Fighter 2. I had a copy of Super Return of the Jedi floating around also.

I fired up my Saturn, but the memory card port is fried- probably due to using the unauthorized import carts. The internal memory is dead also. I fired up the Dreamcast, and it still works like a champ also.

So yeah, I'm going retro also.

I've still have sealed PS1 games I purchased day one that I intend to play eventially. It will happen one day dammit!

I could quit buying titles tomorrow and have enough to keep me going for two or three years if not more.

Saturn cartridge ports are notorious for being cheap and breaking.

The internal memory is an easy fix, probably just need to replace the internal battery which you can easily do yourself and get the replacement battery at Wal-Mart or any department store. I am pretty sure its a cr2032 coin cell battery, the most common type.

If you get another Saturn, you must have this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HFAWLU/?tag=neogaf0e-20

1MB/4MB memory boost, 8MB of internal storage ..and the best feature of all - you can play imports from any region no matter what model of Saturn you are using. And NEVER take it out of the slot once you put it in. The cart is flimsy and the cartridge head itself inside the Saturn sucks and is prone to failure.

Not really, no. I don't tend to buy into the tinfoil hat conspiracies.
Have fun trying to re-download your 360's title update patches once they take down Live for 360.

Disk Rot.
A real concern, for sure, but I've already got most of my old library backed up anyway. And hey, at least the Sega CD will play those back-ups without any hardware modifications!

I'm warning you now OP. When you get bit by the Collector's Bug, it begins as a fun and exciting hobby. It eventually wears off and you realize that your spare room looks like the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. You will then be surrounded by mostly worthless gamea that you'll probably never play.

Although, it's fun getting there.

For the last 10-15 years, every day has been a retro spending spree.

Second hand stores
Thrift shops
Flea markets
Garage sales

I love the thrill of the hunt.

Quoting for emphasis. It's a deep, deep hole.

I was doing the same. If only I had more time and money

I've gone back and forth on collecting since the late 90s. I also keep most of the new stuff I buy because I've regretted selling stuff in the past. I've been reading the retro threads lately and seeing the sky high prices that NES and SNES stuff commands (those are the two I've mainly collected, too, because that was my childhood and teen years). Just recently I've wonders if its time to start collecting PS2 games because they're never going to be cheaper than are now, and its usually once you get two generations removed that people start to see the "retro" appeal in games....

On the other hand - I don't have the time or space any more. Everything that's not 360/ps3 is boxed up right now because I just had a baby and it was time to make room. I've considered getting and xrgb mini to play maybe one select retro console at a time on my plasma but .... With $400 I could build a really decent HTPC to focus on emulation. I've always been loathe to emulate in the past but I just can't have all this shit hooked up at once - especially since we now have to keep the ps3 and 360 around in addition to one or two new consoles. I'm a grown up and I just can't have 7 or 8 boxes hooked up to TV ....

I do this every few years when I get really into a certain console and start worrying that prices will go up. I have a pretty good NGPC collection, a decent Wonderswan collection, and still working on a GBA collection.

Obviously I'm into handhelds, but that's because I'm pretty much done with what I want from NES-PS2. There are a few spendy ones I probably won't ever get (Valkyrie Profile) but I have the majority of my favorite games. This is actually the first gen I'm trying to end with "most" of the games I want in my collection, so I have been focusing on older stuff.

yeah, i can kinda see this coming so, as with what i just said above this, i try to keep it to stuff i intend to play or re-experience. i'm trying to avoid that collector's mentality where you buy Citizen Kane cause it's heralded but you can't see yourself ever wanting to watch it, for instance. the guys on other forums i see who collect unopened stuff, or go for full libraries..more power to them, but yeah, i can't see going that far down, heh.

That's me. I collect sealed games with the purpose of keeping them sealed. And to think this all started as a hobby to get back my old playstation 1 collection. Some of the sealed games I now own are One Piece Unlimited Wii, Metriod Prime Trilogy, GTA Trilogy Xbox, Ni No Kuni White Wizard Edition, MGS HD Collection Collector's Edition, ICO Collection LE... It goes on, and on, and on, and...

I recently started doing this also. The NES, SNES, N64, GCN, Wii, PS1, PS2, PS3 and Xbox 360 are my main focus. Only a few more games to get and my personal collection will be complete. It feels great because now I know the only games I'm going to buy are upcoming releases. No more back logging, trying to find old games, or wondering if I have them, etc. I'll always have the option to go back to any system and game I want. Planning on getting a Wii U and PS4 around the same time. Cannot wait.

I rebought an NES years ago and built a little collection for it. Thanks to the NES thread here, just recently I went back and starting buying some games for it that I never played and/or never knew about. I'd like to keep it up but it sure is an expensive hobby, mainly because I like having complete games.

Last year 200 millions music cd were sold in US alone (according to Pachter). It's sure drastically decrease since music went digital but there are still a lot of people who care about physical media.

Difference being that I don't think anybody is planning to make CD players that have to be connected to the internet every 24 hours to authenticate your CD collection.

You don't have many artists saying that the numbers with big artists and used CDs "don't add up".

I don't suppose there's an arcade GAF? I just got a jamma arcade cabinet and have started to collect arcade pcbs and arcade stuff.

I did this when I was 18 until I was about 28. There is still so much to buy but times are getting tough, so I'll probably end up selling most of it.

I have been on a retro kick recently, though I usually do this in the summer. For me, the thing that made me do it was Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

Downloaded game from Steam

Installed uPlay

Updated uPlay

Made Account for uPlay

Activated game on uPlay

Played game for 2 minutes, lost interest because the prior 18 steps were so annoying and realized I wasn't in the mood for more goddamn shootbang, regardless of how tongue in cheek it might be.

Then I turned on my PS1 and actually played a game. A good one, even!

my life has a low level retro buying spree going on more or less at all times. a bit less recently since i have had a lot of other expenses.

Did this a while back when I repurchased a Sega Saturn, and got all the Japanese games I wanted to play for the system that I couldn't before. Good times! Also over time been doing that for PS1 and 2 as well. Kinda want to do it a little more, get some us sega saturn games again, pick up a sega cd and all the games I wanted for it, and a Super Famicom. But time, money, and just finding some of these things might be hard for me to do it anytime soon.

I don't think MS's policies will affect Sony or Nintendo much, but it does seem like NES and SNES and even GameBoy games are getting more and more expensive as time goes on, so it's probably a good idea to try and get what you can now.

Retro is cool but sometimes I preffer something alive. I am planning a way to give the industry the middle finger it really needs.

I want to get a low/middle spec laptop pc, maybe something with intel HD4000 or maybe a bit better and get just indie games, preferably with no DRM and even considering installing ubuntu.

What I like of the indie scene is that you have more direct contact with de developer, you can read their tweets, you can follow the development of a non final product even work on it.

Going full indie (along with retro, of course) is becoming a real option with little sacrifice.

Retro collecting has been a hobby of mine over the past generation and will likely pick up speed when next gen comes out. I have just about zero interest in PS4/Xbone at this time. You can literally pick up entire retro collections at a yard sale for less than the standard MSRP for a current-gen game. Game hunting in the wild is too fun and it's a blast to come across rarities for cheap.

I'm 20 years old and I tend to play my NES, SNES, and Genesis way more than my Wii U or PS3. PS2 and OXbox stuff is dirt cheap right now too.

If I could offer some advice: don't pay the ridiculous eBay prices, hit up some local yard sales or flea markets, and then if you have some games you really want hunt for a deal online.

Yup. Knowing that I'm probably spending this generation on the sidelines, most of my gaming budget is being spent on retro games. There are a couple of decent shops in close proximity to where I live, and I've managed to boost my NES game count over 100 and my SNES and Genesis counts to over 50 each. I've also put together a PS2 library of over 450 games.

Sorry, new gen. It's not you, it's me-- or maybe it's really a bit of both.

I went on a little spree trying to fill out my GCN library a few months ago. Feels good man :)

Did the same thing. And almost finished getting everything I wanted. Secured a copy of Fire Emblem from a GAFer...big ups to him for helping out. Game is in like new condition.

I've almost completed my personal GCN collection. That is my very first homeconsole, and I'm still buying games I had played over the years I've enjoyed. Most recently I grabbed Gauntlet: Dark Legends and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

My N64 collection is a bit sparser as I did pick one up years after Gamecube, but I'm still pleased with some expensive games I got cheap like Starcraft 64 and Mario Party 3.

My Sega Genesis collection gives me nostalgia I missed out on, especially the really weird/quirky/so-bad-it's-good games (The Lion King, RoboCop vs. Terminator, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition)

I do care about the quality condition of the actual cartridges if I can choose, but otherwise I'll slap them in this universal case and print out a custom sleeve. Beautiful system I have working.

I was already into playing older games. I play GBA, SNES, and Gamecube games regularly. That's not stopping me from getting a PS4 day one, though. :-)

was thinking about making a Retron 5 thread to use as an OT when it drops, not everyone got to see that short e3 demonstration video for it

Last week I got a used Super Nintendo and some games for 15 bucks.

Some of the games are crap.

oh man i love crap games, what'd you get?

I live in Japan, the retro capital of the universe. This is a place near where I live:

Sorry about the blurry cam.

hnnnghhh i hate you, haha...is this were the kacho (game center cx) shops? kinda looks like it

A real concern, for sure, but I've already got most of my old library backed up anyway. And hey, at least the Sega CD will play those back-ups without any hardware modifications!

yup! if i'm not mistaken, turbo/PC engine CD and 3DO both lack copy protection too, don't they? really lets you experience OG hardware without breaking the bank, or risking damage to your originals

haha...again more power to you, but thats crazy for me! it's like when i would see kids with action figures still in the wrapping...sure they're worth tons now but they're meant to be played with!

I don't suppose there's an arcade GAF? I just got a jamma arcade cabinet and have started to collect arcade pcbs and arcade stuff.

we totally need an arcade board thread - Yes Boss! and several others from retro GAF would have a lot to offer, and i love seeing that stuff.

There been attempts previously, at least for cabinet owners but they have all fizzled. There are a lot of owners on GAF but most everyone has accounts on the other big forums like SRK, Arcade Otaku, Shmups, Neo Geo. Or at least gets information from those.

I'd be for it, so long as things like Superguns and Consolizing are included. And keep Mame stuff out as that is a whole other/different world.

yeah, i like just discovered SHMUPs and neo geo forums, i can totally see this is where the scene's at...some really cool stuff in the buyer's forums too. but for what its worth if someone got one going here (especially with stuff on how to get them going over upscalers/etc when possible) id be down, and either way i'd support it & link it from retro-GAF, genesis thread etc!

I have accounts at all the forums but don't post on them, just lurk for info or make the occasional buy. Some of those forums can sometimes be very nasty.

I'll try to come up with an Arcade thread. It might take me a bit since I don't really use computers. But I now use one at work so might be able to make one, that looks OK. Just give me about a week or two. I think a good scope would be Candies, Superguns, upscalers and PCB, consolized systems, getting legacy consoles Cab-working, and perhaps some buying avenues.

i'm down! again i got so much to learn on that front, slowly learning about supergun, jamma etc stuff. what's meant by consolized though? and be sure to bold your request for no MAME talk there man, might be a good idea!

ah, what specifically have you run into? me, ive had the displeasure of asking about mother 3 repro carts on nintendoage only to have a few people lecture me about poisoning the well for real collectors, etc etc. the horses were mad high.

One of the most exciting things seen at E3 for me was Hyperkin's Retron 5.

Can't wait.

Oh. My. God.

HOW did I not hear about this? Bluetooth controller support? 7 systems? Under $100!!!!?

Echoing so many others in this thread, every day is retro day at drspeedy's. I'm almost ready to give up on next gen entirely.

Where to start... all I've seen so far is moar copy/paste zombie, FPS, racing, Mario retreads... nothing that's demanding my gaming dollars over the multitude of great games still calling me from yesteryear.

I mean, I want a PS4, but I can't justify a PS4 when there's just too much great stuff already in existence that offers a better experience (to me). I've still got thousands of current gen games I never got to experience, those will all be new to me (thanks, Obamabacklog). Plus I can always replay them, no internet checkin required :D

Just got Killer Instinct Gold (it's a terrible port, I know) for $20.

Been starting to collect "retro" guides as well. Got the Xenosaga Episode 1 (beat up a lot) and Onimusha 2 (mint condition pretty much) guides for $0.95 each.

I also scored a copy of P.N.03 for $4.95, people on GAF loved it, plus that gif...

I'm sure there's a lot more I will be getting soon, as well. Probably gonna pick up a Super Nintendo and Earthbound (wish me luck... :| ) as well.

So, to answer your question, yes.

Been collecting on and off for years... a little bit less lately due to various financial reasons (allocating my games budget in a few different areas)...

Around where i live we have two "trade centers" (Basically perminate year round flea markets, with multiple used games vendors with all sorts of wild stuff)... so its quite easy to get just about anything (with in reason) a few will even go on the look out for specific things if you ask and leave you info... not sure if they do that for everyone of just "regulars"

I've fallen off the sobriety wagon and have started collecting Neo Geo AES games again.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - HELP ME BEFORE I END UP IN THE GUTTER CLUTCHING A METAL SLUG CARTRIDGE

Actually, yeah I am - I made a little display of all my retro games consoles and bought myself a SNES with a bunch of games, as a result of the Xbox One's recent happenings. The joy I've had from replaying some UN Squadron and Stunt Race FX again has been sheer bliss in a time of anti-consumer madness.

Looking to pick up a region free Gamecube soon too, and then move onto filling out the collection with non-Nintendo machines (must get a Mega Drive and a PS2 at some point)

Then I will weep at all the money I spent on it all. ;_;

I've been an on & off collector for close to decade now, purging my collection at various points. I've realised finally, for myself the best way to collect is not blindly buying up everything I find a good deal on for a range of systems but rather focusing on 1 or 2 systems and going for only the best games. Which for me are shmups, so naturally, i'm all about the Saturn.
