Outlast 11-Minute PS4 Gameplay Demo

Looks like it will go great with all the medications I'm on so let's hope I go into full "virtual reality" and hallucinate in real life after playing this.

Exceptionally good job of making the character feel like he exists in the world from the first person perspective. Oculus Rift support would be nuts.

So the point of this game is to literally "Outlast" this monster from catching you?

Sounds like infinite replayability. My girlfriend would love this game. Its Amnesia for PS4, no?

This game is horror, it's not survival horror

Horror games have been "surviving" for years on the PC.

The most meaningless term in all of videogames. Nobody can agree on a definition.

Well, don't you both get your panties in a bunch :P

I guess it is pretty redundant of a terminology

This is seriously not clicking with me.
I really don't like the horror style they're going for, and i've seen nothing interesting there, aside from a couple of jump scares and a comically goofy monster.

Models, especially stuff like your hands and other bodies, are pretty rough. But the environments look really good, much of it probably due to advanced lighting. Video grain never looked so convincing in actual gameplay :U

I like the way the camera does auto-focus as well.

I'm good friends with one of the leads of the Cthuhlu team, even played the beta of the cancelled sequel!, I'll ask him what he thinks of this next time I see him.

Please tell him I love him.

On topic: I really dig the atmosphere of the game and the overall feeling of the demo, but the enemies seemed a bit generic for me. I mean, such an awesome game and the enemies are your typical zombie/walking corpse type. I would have preferred ghosts or something else.

Damn, this really will be free with PS+? Holy shit if so. Really seems like my type of game based on the footage i have seen. I loveeeeee indie games man

Fuck this ish. I am there day one aka day ps+.
I hate these kind of games and I love these kind of games.

Fuck you too Slender man, I must still "outlast" you in Arrival.

This made me sleepy enough to take a early nap. It didn't seem scary to me. The big brute seemed easy to evade. Resident Evil 2's Lickers were scary, they can easily jack you up.

Its a 2014 title btw.
Hi, I’m Philippe Morin from Red Barrels! Together with co-founders David Chateauneuf and Hugo Dallaire, we started an indie studio for one reason: to use our experience working on games like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Assassin’s Creed to make the horror game we’ve been talking about with each other for years. We’re all big horror fans, especially David, and the game we wanted to make, a realistic survival horror game, wasn’t the type of thing any big companies were willing to take a risk on. So we’re taking the risk ourselves with Outlast, a survival horror, stealth-based game set in an abandoned asylum, coming to PS4 next year!
The best games make you feel something, some type of emotion that sticks with you after you’re done playing. And fear is one of the most powerful emotions we can have as human beings. So for us, to make the best game possible, we know that we have to scare the s*** out of you. We’re trying to do that in a number of different ways, but where we start is with the design. In Outlast you play as a journalist with no weapons or fighting ability. You’re powerless and vulnerable: there’s actually a good reason to be afraid, because you can be hurt (or eviscerated). So, like in real life, your best option to survive is to run or hide. Using our past experience, we’re making those mechanics fun (but hopefully nerve-wracking!), giving your character some parkour-style moves and tweaking the AI so that enemies are smart about looking for you.

Sounds fantastic.

Seriously? Wow. I might consider buying it anyway before we get it for free.

This is seriously amazing (and I do not really recommend it to watch just before you are going to get some sleep - at 1.27 AM. When you are all alone at home. With few lights.)

too late lol

I knew sony would make mistakes. They've taking all the right steps, except they are showing the wrong games. Never heard of this, and it looks great!!

The devs at the PAX East booth were awesome, and the game managed to unnerve me and make me jump in the demo area I played at PAX East, so definitely on my radar. Kind of hoping there is some variety to it, but they have a lot of cool ideas here.

Hmm. I remember seeing an "R1" button prompt.

Yeah, you're right. Looking at the video again, the button prompts are from a controller. But it really doesn't look like the game is being controlled using a controller, though. Movements are super fast and precise and look like keyboard/mouse to me. Weird....I guess it really is a controller?

I think if the game have a actual threat it will make it more scary, the video didn't show some mechanic that makes it risky to be seen, captured, or have the character lose control like the horror games it's following. In Amnesia you are fighting with a balance of progress and insanity which makes you yourself scared of being anywhere near some monster. With the thing in this video I felt like you could toy with it and stick out your tongue from a safe distance.

I bet somewhere in this game you will be shocked while changing batteries, as you pull the camera back up to your face a picture of a monster will be on it or something. I was waiting for it to happen in this video.

You guys are all pussy, harden the f up. No wonder there are so many virgin on gaf.

Wow...

This game totally reminds me of Amnesia, which is good because it was a damn scary game. I also like the graphics, the chromatic aberration gives a kind-of next-gen look.

I'm happy this comes free with plus. But I would have purchased it anyway.

I think it looks great, the cat and mouse aspect especially, but I wish they'd put more effort into making finding batteries more realistic. To just come across a couple of batteries on a shelf completely takes you out the experience.

It's a pretty silly nitpick, but it's something I hope they address. Finding batteries should feel more natural. You're in a hospital after all...

I totally had missed everything on this game other than it would be free on PS+ for PS4. Now i'm genuinely excited for it. I think I'm going to back-to-back this and Amnesia since I still haven't played through that.
