Major Nelson's Twitter Update

He says what he is told to, period. It is not his job to improvise

Get a job, go to a trade show and I dare you to not speak the company line when speaking to potential customers
I have a job thank you. I was at E3 too, lots of "we can't talk about that yet". Microsoft is a mess.

Because that is what the higher ups told them to say, what are you not getting?

Anyhoo just realized who I am quoting, when MS is concerned there is really no point in pretending to have a debate with you. You are very vocal about your hatred with anything to do with the company

I said good day!

:P

It's funny how many apologists are in this thread. Defending Major Nelson using his ONLINE PERSONA is laughable. You want to see the real "Major Nelson"? Go watch Angry Joe's interview and see how "Major" acts when he has to respond in real time without the benefit of proofreading his responses. The man was, and most likely still is, an arrogant douche. You NEVER take something out of someone's hand. EVER. That is so disrespectful.

As someone above already said, bad business is hard to defend. If you have to instruct your PR to LIE TO PEOPLE'S FACES, your stance is already invalid...

I agree Nelson was a dick in that interview, but Joe is intolerable. Seriously. I don't think I could talk to that guy for more than 5 minutes.

Well, they had to cancel their whole online infrastructure to disable a single DRM feature (online checking), so I think his statement was valid. It's not so simple, and comes with tremendous cost (at least for MS).
That youtube guy did not know much indeed, and being a programmer would have helped, I suppose.

Oh lord jesus you swallowed the PR WHOLE

Major Nelson is an embarrasment to Microsoft IMHO. Why he still has a job is beyond me.

He is not an embarrassment to them, he did exactly as they told him.
They are the ones who spun story after story and then told their people to sell their stories.
He is just the kind of scumbag who enjoys what he does, and enjoys the nerd celebrity status that it gives him and definitely enjoys the money it gives and has no problem lying to your face because at the end of the day you are nothing but a sale to him though scores of people think that he is there buddy online.
As for "be nice he is just a PR person", there are plenty of PR people for the various companies who do not come off as smug asshats.

Yeah, he looked real "down to earth" when he was bullying that dude from YouTube, grabbing his mic and wagging his finger at him while telling him he didn't know shit because he wasn't a programmer.

So you don't expect someone to be on the defensive and try to maintain control when being interview by an internet loudmouth whose schtick is to rant and be antagonistic? If that guy attacked him and ripped him to shreds in that interview, the internet would love it. Gimme a break. The guy's in PR, his company makes a game console you don't like and has to support the company line. I guess that makes him an evil human being right? Man, people need to have some perspective here. It's a good thing every company is good and pure so people with jobs can sleep at night.

There's a line between PR talk and straight up lies. He's crossed it many times. No respect for the guy.

He could have answered a lot of things to Joe that weren't ridiculous BS and would still be in line with his PR "I have to twist it in a positive way" role.

So you agree that Microsoft is a mess and everyone who pushed that anti-consumer bs shouldn't have. Ok.

Says a lot for so many here, where on average we are more informed than the average gamer, to be so gullible and dense

The scope of what I wrote was in regards to Major Nelson's role at MS..period

Stop being a caricature, I'm not interested in derailing the thread for your console fanboy shit. A year from now I will own them all as per usual and currently have a PS4 coming day 1

I said good day!

An apologist is a person who argues in favor of something unpopular. I had to look it up to first time I heard it here :P

thanks, that is actually not as insulting as I though. I've had LIVE and now have PS+ so am totally an apologist :P

That gif shows everything I hated in the few seconds I could bear watching that video : what kind of interviewer aims his microphone more at his own face than that of his interviewee ? Ask a question, let people answer and stop talking, FFS !
I think most of those youtube people are from the beginning too narcissistic to do a decent job at journalism or anything similar. They're too focused at being at the center of a video.

He's terrible at doing interviews. He' knows it. He admits it. But he goes to E3 because his fans want him to go there and ask questions. So he takes questions from his fans on a piece of paper, tracks people down, and asks them questions.

His main purpose is always going to be creating youtube videos. And occasionally he actually does decent interviews but if he couldn't do them anymore, I doubt he'd be too upset. I think the fact that he actually got an interview with Major Nelson is rather impressive... and I imagine Joe was pretty nervous about that the whole time.

If you really want to see something cringeworthy, go watch him fanboying all over Man of Steel :P

The MS hate at this forum can get quite extreme sometimes. I absolutely hated what MS was doing with the Xbone and especially the way they were communicating what they were trying to do. They handled it entirely wrong in so many ways that I've questioned WTF they were doing countless times. However I don't think this should fall on people like Larry, who can only do an say what he's told. Don Mattrick and Steven Ballmer should be held accountable for these stupid decisions.

I also understand that Larry was on the short side in that Angry Joe interview. Considering how people were raging at him on twitter, and I'm sure in person at E3, there's a chance he could have just not been in the right state of mind during that interview. Joe did admit he caught him off guard.

People here need to stop looking into PR too much or getting too involved in this petty console war.

I still don't like him. I get that spewing PR bullshit is his job, but he also acted very arrogant in the latest interviews.

He tries to be so cool with this twitter text change. Same with his bear hat. I don't buy it.
Ditto. He was a smug asshole in the Angry Joe interview, spewing bullshit, evading questions and acting like an arrogant dick. The best parts: where he claims his DRM isn't bad it's "ALL GREAT STUFF", "Xbox 1 is the future! Do you want to be part of the future?!", and when he took the mic from Joe. LOL, fuck off douchebag.

But he made a joke on his twitter!

Honestly, it's like the cat burglar episode of the Simpsons. "Oh, he's so charming!" "Let's let him go!"

LMAO

I've only been here a few years and have seen Sony and Nintendo get plenty of hate for things as well. MS took the popular Xbox brand and shit the bed with horrible policies and baffling messaging, it's their fault.

Major Nelson is a professional PR rep for a giant corporation, he's not in a wrong state of mind or off guard for these kinds of interviews, especially against a nervous and unqualified youtube personality. There was just no way to spin the bullshit enough, so they came off like assholes speaking to us like idiot children. I was genuinely shocked how they couldn't even stay on their course for more than a week after E3 before retreating.

Although I do agree he shouldn't get a pass for the Angry Joe interview, in the couple of times I've met Major Nelson he is really a nice guy. I've met him at PAX East 2 or 3 times and every time he has been attentive, nice, and willing to talk. For a PR guy I like that he actually plays games and has personality, even if he can be a bit too zany. My opinion of him is probably bias though seeing I have listened to his podcast for a couple years.

Yeah thats what really annoyed me, I personally find that more insulting than the grabbing the mike thing. The fake smile. I hate people who pull shit like that. I get that Major Nelson works in PR and maybe thats some sort of requisite, some technique to assure the other person, but fake smiles are a pet peeve of mine.
