Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

I'm on console and I feel challenged to get into a party/group. I find that there is very little communication between console players because of the tediousness and difficulty of navigating the text communication interface. Is there going to be a quest pairing system or dungeon finding system in the final game?

Yes, should be live next weekend.

By the way, it seems the racial-stat differences are not so big in FFXIV? In FFXI you could be an Elvaan or Galka mage, but oh well...

Thanks. But why is the one with 180 days cheaper?

Discount for committing to 6 months instead of 1 :P

I think i found it, but i didnt get anything saying i could do it on PS3

It just says "all 1.0 players have access to the beta" so i think thats just saying PC

Edit:
Got an email on june 11 (return to FFXIV!) and 21st (Regional data center) neither of which have any codes...
Hm, I don't know. try searching your email for "Realm Reborn Beta for PlayStation".

i've searched in keybind but couldn't find it, how do you make your characters walk instead of running?

If you're using a controller you can set the sensitivity of the thumbstick, so pushing slightly makes you walk. Not sure about keyboard binds.

Seriously, I cannot emphasis it enough, if you haven't yet gave the controller a chance for this game you need to try it at least once. I wouldn't dream of playing it any other way, while I have swore by my mouse+keyboard for the past decade in this genre.

The UI designer of FFXII brought the distinctive blue dots at zone lines to this game, but for some reason he didn't include the name of the zone you are going enter by crossing the line the way he did in FFXII. I don't get why, it sure would be nice to be able to see where I was going to zone into without having to open the map.

What is also aggravating is how some of the Aethernet listings for where you can go don't have anything to do with where you are going. I have to sit there and think for a moment where the Gate of Sultana, Gate of Nald, and Gate of Thal go in the Ul'dah Aethernet. And if I can't remember, I get to close the Aethernet dialogue and open the map again just to see where I'm teleporting. Come on Squenix, throw us a frickin' bone here!

I think this is an oversight, in Gridania the Aethernet portals to the gates have the zones they link to in parenthesis. The other two cities don't have that however. Weird.

Gridania best town confirmed.

I started out with a controller immediately and I have no idea how it could feel playable with keyboard/mouse.

I tried it and I was terrible. I think it was a comfort level thing and I am not against trying it again but as a healer I didn't find it ideal and preferred KB/M. I love the idea of being able to sit on the couch leisurely and play a MMO so ill probably give it more of a shot next time i am questing or gathering.

I don't think the controller is bad but as you gain access to more skills it's definitely more limited.

I can definitely see where it might get more confusing to have to change through pages of hotkeys to get exactly what you want, but I've also always been terrible at hitting the higher numbers on my keyboard consistently when I'm resting on WASD.

With the controller right now, I'm doing face buttons for attacks and DPAD for buffs or other abilities. So that kinda helps me keep things in check. As I get higher ranked offensive abilities I can put them on higher up pages. But still, I definitely see your point. I haven't gotten there yet and it's probably going to feel more complex than it seems to be in my head.

Well, all the top raiders and pvpers in other MMO's without controllers use keybind setups like this:
RzYsGRC.jpg
+ a mouse with a lot of buttons.

Personally, I could never get the hang of switching between movement and using abilities. I just didn't practice enough for muscle memory to learn.

I switched to a nostromo and use the thumb D pad for WASD movement.

I barely played CNJ but the fact you could use up/down in the dpad to select pt members while keeping the enemy lock down was kinda awesome and fast on you get the hang of it.

Was there a key I could press (on PS3), so that the targeting system would only target enemies and not player characters?

Left and right I think it only circles around enemies.

Admittedly I haven't played healer with it and I did read people having issues they had with selecting what they wanted in a dungeon, though someone else did offer solutions to get the best out of it. You've tried it and that's what I care about. Even at worst you can use the controller as you do all the straightforward stuff and go back to the m+k for dungeons etc as you say. I plan to play conjurer at release so I'll find out for myself eventually.

The post about playing conjurer with controller;

I just facepalmed...

To put it simply I bought one of these 4-5 years ago and used it for about 5 minutes before boxing it away (still have it), with my complaints being the noise and thinking "This doesn't have enough buttons". I didn't think of using the thumbstick for movement... it makes it perfect for hotkeys.

You don't have blindly trust him, they already released videos of some of the later FATEs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udwhDcDkrx8

Some, if not all, of the FATEs featured in that video are already implemented in the beta. I did the Highbridge FATE about a dozen times (where the enemies will kidnap residents) and it's not as interesting to do as it sounds. The Battle of Highbridge series is essentially a combination of zerg fest, tank & spank, and protect the NPCs.

By the end of the weekend, hordes of players ended up playing FATE whack-a-mole on the Drybones map since it ended up being the fastest way to grind exp and GC marks.

I don't know what the dev team needs to do, but FATEs in its current state have amounted to nothing more than randomly repeatable quests under the following categories: zerg fest, tank & spank, protect the NPC(s), and item fetch.

Oh yeah okay.

I'm thinking, how can I show my character online? I saw earlier in the thread, that people were posting links to their character in here - how do I do that?

And is there a great Final Fantasy XIV website out there?

I set up my key-binds almost exactly like the keyboard pic a few posts up. It is how I set up my key-binds in every MMO ever so it is so natural for me at this point and a gamepad is what is new and different. I read that excellent post on how to heal as a CNJ with a gamepad. I just found it to be easier on KB/M due to familiarity. I have been a primarily PC gamer forever and just dabble in console gaming so KB/M is just second nature now. I just need to spend more time with the gamepad and I am sure I could get used to it, I totally see the appeal.

Whelp, I managed to wrestle into submission the infernal triple-headed hellspawn of client/login/free time and played as much as I could. Compromise: I could only play on PS3.

First impressions:
GAF was bloody everywhere I went. I probably should have said Hi, but I forgot my keyboard and by the time I managed to drill through the button presses required for a semi-coherent attempt at communication the person in question was usually gone. I accompanied some of you in public quests and general monster slaying, though.

I ignored my legacy characters for now. Made three toons, the main one got to 16(Ranger)/10(Pokey stick)/13(Botanist)/15(Carpenter) and was obviously a cat. I mean, what else would it be, the alternatives are either human, portable beef supply, toddler, or human with pointy ears.
Human with pointy ears and a tail is, therefore, the only viable choice for a rebel such as me.

Tried Lalafell next, cute as a button (mah teef!) but her job, THM, turned out to be a disappointment. I couldn't get into the gameplay at all. This is the Progress Quest of jobs. Combat is 50% waiting for bars to fill while standing perfectly still (and wriggling the camera stick in boredom). Plus, the (story quest spoiler)
Golem
boss utterly annihilated me, so I'm salty about that. He was a pushover for my Ranger, where I battled the camera more than I did him.

Tried to run around as Roegadyn (Marauder), which is nice, all things considered. Smacking things up close is always fun, and the combo/regen/DOT capabilities add a pretense of variety.

Not sure about the NDA, but about the game itself: I'm pleasantly surprised. That they managed to salvage this much from the terribly broken 1.0 is cool. It's a rather conservative experience, but hey, it's fun enough to play and looks quite nice to boot. Especially for a console MMO. Haven't had one of these in a while.

FFXIV 1.0 is now 12.5% forgiven.

Search character.

Lodestone is the official community forum thingy.

For now the beta forum is taking precedence;

Thanks for tip! The game has a similar armory (equal to World of Warcraft).

One question: where i find a Hi-Potion? Have some seller sells the item near the Central Shroud?

One question: where i find a Hi-Potion? Have some seller sells the item near the Central Shroud?

In Limsa starting zones I had no luck finding anyone selling Hi-Potions so I just went back to the main city where they are sold by a merchant in the row of stalls that other things like armour is sold. I assume it's the same elsewhere.

I set my keybinds to something similar to the picture, though I never bind the 6 key and I also bind a skill to the S key since I prefer to turn or strafe than backpedal.

I've only ever played healers, WoW being a game I healed at the end-game level(as in, have an Invincible level), and cannot imagine playing any game as a healer with a controller. Split second decision making and then being able to press the right button in time for the right person?

Like what I'm seeing in FFXIV so far(healing may be a bit limited, but most of the healing tools are locked behind WHM it looks like so not fair to comment yet), but the UI terrifies me a little bit. I know how important a UI is when it comes to healing. The default WoW UI was terrible too, but that could be changed anyway you want. I don't think this game will have the same freedom, so they really need to get it right.

Also from a healing standpoint, Medica really needs it's range changed, 12 yards is a mess in any kind of fight setting that requires spreading out. And hey, the last "boss" of the beta in Ifrit shows exactly that. There was a spell in WoW that works precisely like this one does in Holy Nova, that spells gone now since they realized it could never really work. An MMO coming out at this stage of the game really can't have 7 year old mistakes in it. :p

Really don't think I'm going to play the beta, I might play it when it releases, so first person to quote this gets my beta invite. Its for PS3, but I guess you can use it for PC too? I don't know, I got Beta Registration Code and a PlayStation®3 Promotion Code.

Is the beta ending today (for this weekend)? I wanted to get some time in before it closes for this weekend, but I'm still out of town!

You can use the target filtering on ps3/gamepads by pressing L1+x,circle,triangle or square to only target enemies, players, npcs etc. Your currently selected filter appears above your hp bar.

I'd lurve to try this on PS3. :D

I haven't posted any impressions before, but I have some simple thoughts on PGL (managed to hit 30).

I found PGL to be an enjoyable experience. At lower levels it can seem pretty boring when all you do is bootshine>true strike>snap punch (especially when solo).

Things pick up after level 15 though once you get straight shot, raging strikes, and etc.

The thing I like so far about PGL is you have to move around a lot to get good damage.
Once you get level 20 it can get crazy when you try to maintain 2 stacks of GL while using skills outside of your main rotation (I had to drop vorpal thrust. It was that or straight shot and the later is just to good to pass up). Those 12 seconds to re-apply GL go by quickly. The difficulty will probably be alleviated with more skill speed (I get the feeling that balancing skill speed and determination will be important for pgl/mnk)

As far as damage goes, PGL is great (as long as you get your positioning). Nothing like doing Straigh Shot + Raging Strikes + Internal Release + Crit hit food + 2 stacks GL. Managed to break 105 damage on the Toto-Rak boss a few times.

I look forward to playing monk in phase 4 (I'm going to miss having archer skills, but Fists of Fire will more than make up for that).

The only gripe I have is that PGL has no ranged move (where is my Chi-Blast?). It's not a problem till you get to TTR.

Anyone else rock PGL?

Very good points. The lack of zone names while approaching the blue zone lines really bothered me but it never formed into a coherent thought I guess. Should post this on the official forum.

Thanks for explaining this, will definitely give that a shot next time I do a FATE on PS3.

Oh, I had no idea! Thank you! I'll be sure to try this out next weekend. Hopefully, this will make FATE targeting much easier.
