Killer Instinct coming to Xbox One

He will be in: i was confirmed by one of the developers at E3 there's a dinosaur creature in the roster. :D

That doesn't mean riptor is in the game. It could just as easily be a new dinosaur charecter. Ken lobb was even asked about riptor by ign and lobb said while riptor is a favorite of his that he's just one voice in a room and if everyone disagrees with him there is itching he can do.

For the first couple of weeks, 95% of the people you face online will be Jago. They should at least throw in Sabrewulf in the free version.

We don't even know how many characters the game will even launch with

I'm hoping for a huge stable of unique characters... We may get majority of classic characters day 1 and then the DLC/Season pass/Round Two stuff will be new and fresh characters as well as characters that they'll just add despite only 3 people asking for (Tusk) edit: ^ holy shit there is one of them

They can always expand the free characters down the road once they build up the roster, though.

seriously can't wait for this.
hope they package a HD version of the original KI arcade game.

great to know robin beanland is still at rare working on the soundtrack to this game. :D

If it's not him, it's another dinosaur.
And every dinosaur make me happy.

I got some negative sounding questions about this new Killer Instinct. I'm a guy that put a LOT of time into Killer Instinct arcade in the 90's. As well as Samurai Shodown 2, King of Fighters 95 and Super Turbo, which were all in the arcades at the same time.

I've got to say that this new KI looks trash to me. What type of fighting game community are the developers trying to appeal to? The 2D crowd (SF, KoF, ASW games, Skullgirls etc)? The 3D crowd (Tekken, DoA, VF)? The Mortal Kombat/Injustice crowd? Or complete newbies?

For those that are looking forward to this game, what is it that has you so excited and what is your fighting game background? Doesn't matter if you have no fighting game background.

Was flipping shit over KI coming back. Hype wore down, got skeptical. Played the game, then played a lot more. Couldn't get enough, can't wait to play more.

Trailers and all current media make it also look like crap on the net. Until you see it on a screen a few feet in front of you with good sound, it's fairly captivating regardless of what you think Jago/Wulf look like.

And to answer your question, the first KI was created to cater towards the SF2 and MK crowd back in the mid 90's (was told this to be true by the one of the creators of KI at E3 this year). Funny how the new KI seems to be following suit even today

This is only anecdotal, but I've noticed that the people who's experience begins and ends with the original KI arcade game tend to not like where this game is going, while the people whos experience began with the snes version and went on to play Ki2 gold can't be more hyped.

It's strange because this game is supposed to be more like KI 1 according to interviews. i haven't played either, but to me it looks more like KI 2, which always looked garbage to me (I admit I never gave it a chance though)

Its an interesting tidbit.

There was a small time in there where KI 1 and 2 were THE games I wanted to play... It was all for the thrill of the combos, back then. KI2 I feel is a more distant memory now, but I do remember going to the local Putt-Putt, and fighting away on it all the time...

I'd say they're appealing to a wide range of people who like traditional 2D gameplay fighters. It has the mechanics of a SF, a bit of violence akin to MK, and a western appeal that really hasn't existed like this in a western fighter since... what.. Tao Feng? It (so far) has a better style than MK, while combining animation and personality that's like a Mix between SFIV and the KI games of old.

All toped with an early next gen shine of "Better graphics that still run at a rock solid 60FPS".

For those that are looking forward to this game, what is it that has you so excited and what is your fighting game background? Doesn't matter if you have no fighting game background.

I've always been a fan of fighters. Back in the day, I got really comfortable at generally being the best at any fighter I played. This all changed when online play on consoles became serious, and I was exposed to players who pulled off the things that, in my group, only I ever attempted. I was meager at these things, these guys were MASTERS at them.

So I've spent online play console gens refining myself into a better fighter, playing at a balance of the fun, hot-blooded casual nature, and the hardcore, mechanical tourney player nature. I don't like my fighters to feel unnaturally restrictive in character selection, I don't like only aiming for the combo that everyone else uses, and I have no direct love for playing the usual characters or top-tiers; I play the peeps I like, normally the odd ones!

All of this has led me to like KoF / SNKP much more than SF / Capcom, as KoF's universal systems and better developed, more well rounded characters call out to me a lot more. I feel like Capcom purposely makes many poor-playing characters in the grand scheme of things, and I tire of characters I like lacking tools that could obviously make them more well-rounded.

How this all relates to the new KI? Well, I see a game that appears to look and play similar to what I like in SF (I was surprised as soon as I saw KI show a legit looking cross-up, and good footsie tools; these never felt right in old KI, but they look well done now!), mixed with the strong overlaying systems & per-character balance and uniqueness of a KoF.

Gameplay sounds fresh, too. Different enders giving personal bonuses on combos is a cool concept. Combos that end in bonus meter, or bonus damage, in addition to the usual concepts like hard/soft knockdowns, distance from character, etc.

They actually adapted the depth of modern fighters, without over-relying on nostalgia for the brand. And added unique character-specific tools, such as Jago being able to shadow-cancel off his throw, and Saberwulf being able to dash right through enemies, for mid-screen, ground-based cross-ups. It's a great mix of "I wanna do that, that sounds cool!" and "y'know, it could actually be useful, as well!"

I don't understand the hate for the new character designs personally, because, even in this early state, I feel like KI shows much more promise than a usual 3D western fighter, and more than KI ever did.

- The idle stances for Jago and 'Wulf are already a cut above the usual, showing an attention to detail that hints at the designers really having fun making these unique characters.

- The actual move animation looks like the "Poppin 2D" you see in old KI, but yet enough 3D, smooth movement to work well when needed. MK is bad here, for me; they put too much motion in moves that should snap, and seem to vary between wildly different motions too often, to the point where it looks like they have no defined style, just a mess of ideas. This game already looks above that, to me; even if it's style is "Just a lot like SFIV", it's a deep understanding of what already looks good in IV, sot just a pale imitation.

- The theory behind the designs looks like the good of KI, in HD. The things that seem to be dropped all seem to tie into making things work by concept, and design. The old designs were too 1-note to me, even back then. Jago looks like more than "90s Ninja with colors to attract the power ranger crowd", 'Wulf looks like more than "my pet dogs head thrown on a bulky body", and Glacius looks like an actual Ice-based beast, rather than "a quick take on a fighting game T1000". There's a lot less "symptom of low poly modeling" to the look of these new designs, compared to old KI.

All in all, I feel this game looks better than most groups "my first fighter"; the devs have been very upfront about what they've shown, and the nuance behind the gameplay seems to be heading in a good direction. It feels to Street Fighter what Fatal Fury was like back in the day: a good alternative that has a lot of fresh ideas on top of it's blatant similarities, that could make it even more fun to play, for the right players.

That would be neat if they still had the assets and could re-render them in high resolution, but I'd be happy with an arcade prefect version for home.

Holy crap that would be awesome. I'd say it's unlikely as much as I want it to be true. At least for most japanese developers back in the pre 2001 days, they would literally throw away/delete all assets of most games after completion. My god, imagine if those characters were still in model on some computer in the UK?

Has anyone ever noticed how "designed by committee" killer instinct was back in the day ? Like someone at rare played some street fighter and mortal kombat and said... "I could do this " , they got approval from nintendos' wallet and you can almost see the generic meeting that was had afterwards.

My writing is pretty messy but it just kind of makes me laugh looking back on the cast of Killer Instinct .

Jago - Kids love ninjas so let's have a bad ass ninja , he'll be like ken or ryu too and throw fireballs and shit

Spinal - I called him captain skeleton for a bit because I couldn't remember his actual name but I mean seriously, he's a swashbuckling skeleton.

Black Orchid - well we need to have a woman fighter for sex appeal or something but our rendering technology can only make banana boobs and plastic hair.

Riptor - He's a raptor that rips things so call him riptor, Jurassic Park came out a year before KI 1 so kids loved dinosaurs.

Fulgore - Kids love wolverine and kids love kano in mortal kombat so what if we made a killer wolverine cyborg with laser eyes ?

Glacius - uh... oh man I don't know how about a guy made out of snow like an evil frosty the snowman ... what do you mean clayfighter did that ? oh hell just make him made from ice then.

Cinder - Well we have an ice guy so I guess make a fire dude , they could be rivals or something too. Kids like to burn things.

Sabrewolf - We got all these generic characters how about a wolf man ? , we can even name him after an old unused property of ours.

T.J Combo - see hip hop and "urban" culture are gaining in popularity and mike tyson was a boxer so what if we make a boxing black man that has the name of a hip hop artist ? Oh and give him an eyepatch.

Chief Thunder - fighting games in the mid nineties were running out of stereotypes to mark off on their checklists so why not include a "native american" that can toss glowing tommahawks from his hands.

Boss Character - oh man idono, remember those old sinbad movies ? what if the boss was the cyclops and we make him look like old crappy stop motion too ? Call him Eye-dol because uh....

And then they went and made a sequel ....

So people loved our first game ... but there was only 1 woman so let's add a couple more of those and uh... 1 dude. Someone raised a hand to point out they'd have to cut someone to fit within memory constraints. "get rid of the fire guy , no one used him anyway".

Maya - 10,000 BC covergirl with a couple of knives , yeah let's do that.

Tusk - Conan the barbarian , kids still like that stuff right ?

Kim Wu - well, we need a "chun li" character so just give some asian girl nunchakus and call it a day.

Robin is not involved with the soundtrack at all

I hope they bring back most of the original cast, since they were mostly all pretty fun designs. Please, none of the awful sequel characters

Seeing how much they have butchered the designs of Jago and Saberwulf I don't have much faith they can do justice to the original cast much less any from the sequel.

they didn't butcher shit

jago is no longer just a generic ninja

sabrewulf is no longer a bi-pedal dog

How do you "butcher" designs that were pretty shit to begin with? Like barely a step above Time Killers. The new looks aren't anything to write home about, but they are far superior to the old designs.

This argument could be made for basically any fighter ever. Its funny, but the fighting games with the most unique approaches to character design came in the late PS1/ Dreadcast era. (cyberbots, SFEX, bloody roar, rival schools, powerstone, darkstalkers and to a lesser extent SF3)

Everything before and since has been by the numbers. You have your shotoclone, your ninja, your bulky grappler, your monster, your femme fatale, your OP boss and a bunch of characters which are a variation of all the above, with differing stat values.

I think KI2 is a piece of shit and I can't wait to play this

well.........not being funny but Im not sure there is anything coming out on the X1 that you aren't looking forward to play. How much did you play the arcade version of KI1?

KI's design was always a hybrid of old monster movies (The Wolfman, Jason & the Argonauts, etc.) mixed with modern 90s aesthetics (90s comics, Mortal Kombat, Industrial and gothic shit). There was a method to the madness.

I personally don't like the new Jago I think he's overly buff (like Chris Redfield in RE 5) and the tatoos are too much. Jago looked better clean cut. Also the graphics are too cartoony now like SF 4 when the original game had a darker more real world look.

http://s787.photobucket.com/user/IOnEIFalcon/media/wrongkillerinstinct_zps2307c8f5.png.html Robin and Klobb are the only people from the Core Rare KI team left, judging from Seavor's twitter. (great dude to follow btw.)

What does that have to do with anything????

Beanland is not working on this.

wat... You confuse me for being a fanboy.

As for KI1... I played it religiously. Both arcade and SNES. One of the few games I've been meaning to build or buy a cabinet for.

To be fair, Reboot was technically a cartoon.

Not sure if I just missed the discussion on this, or if you guys missed it entirely, but this article strongly hints that the original KI will be included with the special edition version of KI X1.

"We haven't announced [what's in the special edition] yet, but I think hopefully most people can put two and two together," says Willette. Asked if it might be a port of the original Killer Instinct, Double Helix Design Director David Verfaillie just smiles.

Then while you may not agree, you can see where im coming from. Everything from basic collision detection, to animation, to sound design, to character design is very very very different.

As ive said before in this thread, the sound design is the biggest issue with this game. In the original KI, even if you closed your eyes and dialed in your combo, the hits had a certain "beat" to them. Even more important than the announcer stutter or the soundtrack. Think back to the little details, like how cinders walk would be perfectly in-time with the beat of his stage music or the thunder of Saberwulfs run.

And then there is the stupid shit. Why is the shadow kick now just a forward kick instead of a roundhouse? Why is the laser blade a scimitar? where is the bruce lee high pitched voice? Where are saberwulf's bats? Why have the spinning claw, rolling and running slash be changed so drastically/removed entirely?

Im not trying to shit on the game, but as ive said, It looks as much like KI1 as blazblue looks like guilty gear. Im not disputing the game will be fun and even competitive, but for some fans, myself included, this wasn't the KI we wanted.

I would love to see everyone return except Gargos and Kim Wu

retool tusk into a boss or something

We cannot be friends.

Killer Instinct 2's characters existed in a time that was 2000 years before the original Killer Instinct, so the possibility of them not returning could happen. However, plots in fighting games are never taken seriously, so we'll just have to see. I thought Kim Wu and Tusk were memorable characters, so I have a feeling that they will return. I hope Kim Wu returns.

Speaking of how stuff looks, just put up a video talking about my first hand experience with the graphics and art.

Killer Instinct 2013: Graphics/Art Breakdown by Maximilian
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dJp_8KVs0M

Thank you Max! I was a big downer on this but after seeing your videos covering KI, I'm now back on the bandwagon. Was only going to get Forza 5 for the XB1 but now it looks like there will be a second title I will buy in November.

Thanks much for watching. After putting so much time into the game, I just wanted to talk about it more and more after E3. Luckily, making videos for it eases my hype by a little. Can't wait for Evo.

edit: to avoid double posts, dude on the DH forums found a couple teaser images in the websites code

Sabrewulf's stage?

Community feedback?

Sabrewulf's stage?

Community feedback?

'Keep Signature Character Moves' should be MUCH higher on that list. Probably my biggest gripe right now is how different all the moves look from their signature style, especially Sabrewulf. Maybe they can just add more moves to the current ones, who knows. And yeah thats definitely Sabrewulf's stage, looks very nice.

Its nice to see that DH is listening and going to try to implement some of the community feedback. Makes me much more optimistic about the final product.
