Those are FATE's NMs.

Oh? Hmm. So did they take out regular NMs in the world? If so, that really sucks - it was always fun farming some of them for their drops in 1.x. It was exciting seeing a NM roam the field when passing by, killing it, and getting the rare drop. lol

NM's were one of the worst parts of FFXI, and there was alot of parts I hated. That system is really a relic from early EQ days and the FFXI team didn't even manage to do it as well as EQ did.

When large portions of the entire endgame of your MMO are being essentially ruined due to botting, spawn time manipulation and regional timezone differences then chances are some thorough changes need to be made.

That is one feature that I have no issue leaving in the past forever.

Well, they were not really like that in XIV 1.x. They had really quick respawns - like 5 minutes, but the drop rates were lower and rare/ex to boot. No one botted them afaik. I do agree that the FFXI method of HNMs/NMs was painfully annoying. But I did like how they added a bit of competition into the game. It was thrilling when you got the claim, but crushing when you didn't... :(

I loved NM/HNMs in FFXI, but after so many years I'm totally fine moving on from that type of system. The NMs in v1.0 were nice as they had very quick respawn times, but if they add loot rewards to the FATE NMs, then that will be good enough, and it also will be another incentive for people to do those particular FATEs beside the exp.

Yeah I was talking specifically about how FFXI handled it, the way FATEs work is perfectly fine as a NM replacement as long as they add drops and tune some of them to be a little rarer or more difficult then the average FATE.

I would say that of the many parts of current FFXIV the FATE system is one of the most promising given enough time to develop it with further iterations down the road.

You get grand company currency from doing FATES, there is your incentive

If the FATE NMs will be dropping items, that's interesting. I am curious on how the loot would distribute, though. Would it just be something that randomly drops in to everyone's inventory when it dies? Or just 1 person getting it? If I had to guess, it'd be a random chance for each person to get it in a situation like that (since you aren't in a party to need/greed/whatever).

I don't mind HNMs being gone, especially since that's an endgame thing where you have to gather groups and then potentially not even get into the fight.

But little NMs that you have a chance to run into and get a rare drop from are pretty exciting. Sad to see that aspect gone personally.

Up to level 15, I didn't feel like there was even anything in the game that I could do to make my character better. Like, there wasn't anything that I could go put in a bunch of work towards *optionally* to make my character excel. Feels like everyone is along for the same ride.

Is this where the GC seals come into play?

GC seals come into play after 20
Do they fill that void though? I mean, a big part of MMOs is progress and a big part of progress is being able to obtain things that not everyone else has.

Probably be different tiers with varying percents on a chance for the loot on a person to person basis that is ranked based off of event contribution.

Pretty much how this kind of public event system has worked in previous MMO's with some modification and changes.

Idk about NM's that drop gear, but you gain rep for doing fates that you can use to rank up with the grand companies and buy gear *battle, gathering, or crafting*

For example, you need 1000 tokens to buy a chocobo, then there is a level 20 gear set you need about 2,3k to buy, then a level 22 weapon for 900, then in order to get rank 2 you need to speed 2000 tokens and that unlocks new gear to buy from that point. At about level 20 you get about 250 per fate if you get gold, and it scales up with every level.

Yeah, I agree. It was always fun to stumble across one, and think, "hmm, I wonder if I can solo this!" The times I soloed certain smaller NMs in FFXIV 1.x were some of the most entertaining times for me.

As if GC stuff were anything good now, did you have a look at the stats of the gear in the GC shop? Unless higher rank (new ranks for ARR) have better things than 1.0 items (AF, Militia, Darklight), then I (and pretty much no one) will care about that aspect besides ranking up for story purposes.

Also I pretty much expect Crystal Tower/Bahamut stuff to be highly superior than GC crap, and in an ideal world, HQ items with forbidden melds should also be, but going by some tests that were performed during these past weekends, the stats cap for materia melding is too low for the current existing items.

On that topic, I would expect new recipes bettering many if not all of the 1.0 recipes to be able to take advantage of the lv5 materias, but I'm not getting my hopes up and I will see my clothcrafting as means to make curtains and tablecloths, for housing you know.

Ah yeah, that's probably how it'll work, or it makes the most sense to do it like that anyways. I guess instead of people camping NMs like in FFXI and XIV 1.x, people will just camp FATEs to try to get it as much contribution as they can for a higher drop rate. Assuming the NMs have something worthwhile, anyways.

That is also your exact same incentive for doing leveling dungeons, but those have unique loot too. Don't know if company guildleves give generic loot like leves do, but that is also the same even without it.

EDIT: And yeah, by design, everything is going to suck compared to whatever the last or last two dungeons give. I'm told this is a good thing. I doubt crafters or grand companies will have much to do with it.

I think adding a bunch of random spawns that don't drop anything super special would be nice. Like right under the level of camping for it so that they are there for people exploring or just wandering though. Sort of like that weapon right outside Delkfutt's Tower on Qufim Island in FF11. Or any number of "silver dragon" mobs in WoW. Just mobs that are on a longer the normal spawn time that drop something that may be cool for like a level, but that's it.

Sorry not everyone is level 50, if you are 50 have fun in dungeons and raids. GC gear is there for a gear buffer for leveling up, and seeing that's what fates are as well...

I dont know about you guys but every dungeon I've done with randoms they listened to what I was saying and asked for advice on the bosses *or gave it*

No one even used limit breaks unless I called out for them to use it.

I ran one as a pug yesterday with a cnj, thm and mar. The mar would not initiate and would not use any hate managing skills. He either didn't speak English, was on ps3 and didn't know how to chat, or a combination of the above. It ended up with me and the cnj tanking and kiting and it was sooo baaaad.

BUT CHOCOBO BARDINGS

At that point I stop the run, and start telling the dude how to play. I played with a new japanese player and was able to explain boss fights just fine with the translator / emotes.

Even if you never see the dude again the rest of your life, helping someone how to play normally has a good longterm effect on the community

I tried so hard, explaining in English then using the translator and pointing and calling targets and everything to no avail.

FATE will not give GC seals in retail. They do so now so people can get their chocobos faster in beta.

That's pretty damn stupid not have seals part of FATEs. I just had to do a single run at Hala (with a couple GC leves) to get my 1k seals with my GC log and I had my chocobo.

So about crafters again. Aside from repairs and materia melding, will they be able to make any exclusive equipment? We were talking about this the other night, but i'd like some people who were going to be really into crafting to chime in.

Everyone knows that MRD is mad deeps, yo!

Actually, MRD had insane DPS in 1.0. Plenty of people are probably starting out and expecting to be able to DPS in this game, because MRD has a big axe and no shield in sight. It's best to explain politely to people who try to DPS that MRD is now the other tank class alongside GLD and if they expect to play the game at launch and continue being MRD they will be expected to be the main tank. Hell, MRD is classified as tank in the party list, is given a hate meter like GLD, their Limit Break is the same as GLD, and the Duty Finder will put them in parties as the tank! So they better get used to tanking, or roll another job!

That last Satasha run we did before beta ended with 3 LNC and you on CNJ was pretty hilarious. We almost made it too, until that one boss finally killed us and we ran out of time.

I truly enjoyed this latest weekend. Got to 15 MRD and ran into the first instance quest. Sorta stumped, wondering if the story quest was somewhere else.

Lil' Miqo'te dude waves at me, asks if I tank. I've tanked in just about every MMO I've played but I wasn't sure about the Marauder being right for it. Only two High Enmity abilities so far? Obviously I hadn't been paying attention to the job changes since 1.0. I told him as such.

"You'll do fine, c'mon!" Got into a party and had an absolute fucking blast. Total PUG but everyone was great, talked about our other MMOs and how pretty the coral areas of the dungeon were. Beat the boss (After standing at his entrance and placing bets on what the indicated bubbled areas were) and said our goodbyes. Only to find the next quest was another instance.

"You guys wanna do another?" We hung out for half the day just questing and talking, I worry I won't be starting on that server since I have Legacy friends but hopefully I'll see them again at some point.

Not sure why I felt the need to tell the story. Most of this thread is discussion on mechanics and concerns about end game. But goddamn it gets the vibe right. I'm really excited.

Wait where will you get GC seals in Retail? The only places I noticed I got any was from the hunting log and from fates.

GC NPCs offer you levequests for seals.

This has actually been discussed in the FATE subforum in the beta forums, with people both supporting and opposing FATE giving GC seals. If you guys don't like that FATE GC seals is going away, you should definitely post there and make sure your opinions are heard!

I actually did a run of Sastasha with LNC, ARC, THM and CNJ. Worked pretty well with THM providing some off heals when needed. The ARC ended up tanking (kiting) and I ran around poking from behind.

The problem with leves was that they really didn't give that much seals and they weren't particularly easy to find. I actually found the ones for my GC by accident towards the end of this week while exploring and trying to finish my GC hunting log. On the other hand I could see how they wouldn't want them tied to FATEs since they are so readily available and easy to farm. I manage to get promote pretty quickly once I got over the hump of the hunting log.

Yeah. I think the key is just making them drop fun/cosmetic BOP items and award a ton of exp for a kill. Then there's no fear of the gilsellers camping them. They could even have a special section of the hunter's log that tracks the kills and gives you something special for defeating all of them.

An MMO can be interesting for a little bit when it's new, but what keeps people playing for awhile is the community. That this happened to you(and did actually to me to as a healer) is a very good sign for the game, honestly.

I mean, people are talking end-game, but you don't solo end-games in MMOs.

Had people not believe I was a tank when joining groups as a MRD. True story. One guy insisted on getting a GLD even after I told him.

Don't take it too far. Making them hunting log objectives adds to the tedium of them. Just fun little mobs that you find that are different from the normal spawns is all I want.

Now thats what i'm talking about.

I remember getting into a party as a MRD and then another DD joined and the leader kicked the just joined ARC and then was like:"Ops, sorry I have to kick you need a tank and a healer" and I was like "Hey dude, I'm a tank you know".

lol

Which MMO, if you don't mind me asking?

An MMO can be interesting for a little bit when it's new, but what keeps people playing for awhile is the community. That this happened to you(and did actually to me to as a healer) is a very good sign for the game, honestly.

I mean, people are talking end-game, but you don't solo end-games in MMOs.

That's what I've discovered going through the most recent batch of MMO releases. Everything is shiny and new when you first login and then it just dulls out without folks around you. I have high hopes for XIV now, just from meeting the few folks that I did. I honestly put the idea of meeting cool people aside for the beta, thinking we'd all be too busy testing and messing around but I was absolutely wrong.

I'm happy with this game. I most definitely wasn't with v1.0, but this has a charm that I can't possibly deny. The localization is fantastic, as well.

Well in 1.0 NMs were part of achievements, even the lv 60 ones (if they stayed at that level after 1.19). So I wouldn't be surprised if FATE NMs are also part of the achievements, even if not of a Hunting Log.

Most parties I just formed. Ran with some GAFers too which was great. But that's just what I normally do is form my own party. If people didn't like that I was a MRD tank, I sent them their way only to realize, I have the only available healer currently :D

Thats why it'd be under a "special section", it wouldn't have to be mandatory for anything.

Wait people complained that you tanked on mrd? I never seen that. My friend has tanked everything with mrd. People just joined up said thanks for the invite and we went on our way o.o/

Ah shit unless they give you a fuck ton of seals with those it's going to be way way too slow for the level of gear.

I had a few. I even pointed out that my icon was blue. That I had the highest HP in group, etc etc. I guess people still have that perception that MRD is a dps class or they just prefer a GLD.

LOL Then they are stupid :D It's not like MRD can't use flash either. Pretty helpful at the start of a fight

See above :D

So is MRD overpowered at this point or something? I haven't grouped up yet (15 LNC, will probably check that out next weekend) but I get the impression that MRD is better at DPS than LNC and also much better defensively.

I have played both LNC and MRD, and LNC has a lot better DPS than MRD I think.

Early levels MRD probably put out great damage. The more they level, the more tank they become with their abilities. In the end, a DRG will out dps a WAR easily.

Ah I see, I was basing the defense thing off of their ability to tank and all of the awesome gear LNC can't wear. I was only basing the DPS notion off the in-game descriptions and talk from the guild NPCs. It sounded like MRD was supposed to be all about damage.

edit: Steel Cyclone looks pretty awesome though. I guess DRG/LNC must have higher attack or something then. Thanks for that site by the way, I was looking for something like that!
