Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Review Thread

I already want this but I'm still holding on to the dream of a Luigi-flavoured 3DS XL pack with the game.

Come on NoE, don't disappoint me now!

They probably will. If that'd come out here we would've known already.

:'(...

Nah there really wasn't anything they didn't like. Basically it's a perfectly fine game, just not as cool as they were hoping the dream stuff would be, and not as lol funny as previous games in the series.

The recurring theme was a) there is a lot for this game to live up to and )b AlphaDream seems to be playing it pretty safe.

I'm starting to get scared due to those low scores. I think I remember Bowser's Inside Story getting great reviews right from the beggining. This doesn't remind me to Paper Mario Sticker Star... but I'm starting to fear a "not-so-great" Mario & Luigi, just like Partners in Time.

It's one 7, calm down.

The usual rules apply:

Different reviewers. Different subjective interests. You are not the reviewer. If you think the game looks good, get the game.

Still hyped for the game I think, just its come so fast. Should have promoted it more/announced earlier.

What I dont understand here...
Why the negativity around Partners in Time?
I loved that game!
The baby Mario/Luigi just added some awesome gameplay mechanics to the game.
In fact, I quite missed them in Bowsers Inside Story, and for bowsers inside story, Mario/Luigi had pretty much no gameplay in the "3D world" right?
They both have cons/pros over each other though really imo.
I like them both for slightly different reasons.

I do like what the babies added to the gameplay, but there were some noticeable flaws in the game:

-Unmemorable music
-Extremely bland level design
-Took away a lot of features that were present in the first game
-Rather short overall (I think)
-Final boss took WAY too long

These are all from memory. It's not a bad game at all, but it doesn't really stack up to the rest of the series. BiS improved on it greatly.

Ah I never played the first game sadly, so I guess thats why I dont see the flaws as much.
But yeah, I definitely remember the final boss.... ha ha.

I have another question for Dream Team...
Has anyone noticed the quality of the 3D model of Mario?
It just really looks like some poor fanmade mario model or something which disappoints me...

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yli68Q4C1q4
At around 14:06.

God DAMN the music in this game is so good.

 Yoko Shimomura

What mostly killed it for me was that, through most of the game, the villains didn't speak understandable dialect and simply weren't funny. This was a massive step down from the wonderful Cackletta/Fawful comedy duo of Superstar Saga. I still thought the game was great fun, though. I never really got why it's so hated, despite the reasons given so far in this thread.

Less Fawful hurt it too.

That gives me pause for Dream Team, but fingers crossed it won't suffer too much.

Yeah, PiT is just weird. It feels like a completely different team made it. Even the music, I genuinely thought that Shinomura did not compose it when I played it.

Still a great game of course.

Not caring about the review scores, whats the big cons in the reviews? Just 'more of the same'?

I only know the scores, haven't read the reviews. But someone mentioned "too many tutorials". Otherwise, ONM said 35 hours to reach the end of the story (plus sidequests and extra stuff) and a new mechanic or idea every half hour... which sounds awesome to me.

I don't really know what's going on, game looks amazing, fresh and intelligent but only ONM score seemed to fit that.

If the cons in the reviews are just "tutorials" and "slow start", then who gives a shit. BiS was also like that and it's still a 10/10 game for me.

The pros in ONM's review sound amazing anyway. Can't wait!

Instead of only looking at the numerical score, perhaps looking at the review text when it's available to fully comprehend why the not-as-bad-as-some-are-making-it-out-to-be 7 was given. Subjectivity exists, and all reviewers look for different things in a game to enjoy. A 7 is truly not a bad score by any means. Even then, from a purely anecdotal standpoint, a lot of the games that I have liked have scored low, and a lot of the games that I don't think are that great at all have scored very high (especially this generation). It's all subjective. Don't get your head all twisted up just because you think you're going to dislike/like a game based on their perspective as opposed to yours. You will never know about how you feel a game unless you play it yourself.

I'm looking forward to this, and I've been looking forward to it since it was announced. Not going to let what some other people think of the game deter me from either liking or disliking the game in the slightest.

I think people ragging on 2/Partners In Time are wrong for that reason. It made battles complex but brief rather than extended and piecemeal. It was also more difficult for that reason (the environmental puzzles were, I guess, but negligably so). Its battles were the best of any Super Mario role-playing game.
I always felt like I was in the minority when it came to this, too. I like Partners in Time for these reasons; I liked it for its complexity. Adding X/Y didn't feel burdensome to me because I felt that adding that additional layer of thought and design with the environmental puzzles. Not to mention that I kinda liked the physical/slapstick comedy more. Animations in that game were great.

In response to reviews scores, I have utterly stopped caring for them.
I used to sort of take them as truth, (Though I admit now, if a game is getting mostly 8/9/10's it'll certainly get my attention).

Really now, I judge games on a few things.
1. READING the review, I'll see what they think and compare that to what I reckon I'd think about that.

2. My gaming gut, ha ha. If game videos seem promising and things you hear about the game all speak to you, its worth more attention.

Ultimately, pre ordering games are all really based on... risks to us in a way. I admit I havent had many games I've regretted pre ordering... Only one I have is God Of war: Ascension as of late... yeah...
If you feel like taking a chance on it and believe it definitely looks like something you'd enjoy, go for it, if you're dubious about it'll live up to your expectations, wait till more reviews or for it to get cheaper.

(Slightly off-topic, but I've been resisting the temptation to buy NSMB2 simply because I feel the price is too high. That and I'm kinda "punishing" nintendo, cause it just feels like they took the majority of the assets from NSMB DS, I was hoping for a more quality NSMB, but to get more on-topic, I dont feel Nintendo are being lazy on Dream Team, from reading Iwata Asks, I got a sense of how much work they put into this and its definitely more than NSMB2 to me)

People didn't like PiT? I loved the first two. BiS was pretty boring.

Can't wait for this one.

My thoughts exactly. BiS got praised heavily, but I just wasn't feeling it. My favorite one so far is definitely PiT. The final fight might have lasted for a long time, but I loved it!

I liked what the babies added to the battles, and I agree with you on the comedy and animation, but throwing the babies over and over into pipes is NOT good puzzle design. Every section felt the same as the last. It's my main gripe about the game.

They can't even make a game that gets more than a 7 from EDGE? What kind of bullshit is this? Alphadream still made it, didn't they? It's not some random Canadian dev like LM2, right?

:l

what world do you live in where a 7/10 is considered bad

Edge gave the original Paper Mario a 7 and TTYD an 8, even if reviews aren't as good as BIS I doubt this score alone is cause for any concern.
