Dragonball Z Battle of Z (PS3/360/Vita) announced

Whipped out my old PSP a few days ago and started playing a DBZ game on there (as well as KHBBS) and I'm having a blast. Will get this on Vita, was trying to find a PSP DBZ game on PSN but had no luck

For that matter, is SS4 itself even canon anymore?

Technically, GT was never really "canon". It was the official sequel and ending to the DBZ anime, but all material related only to the manga always ignored it.

Anyway, with this movie, they apparently went out of their way to make it clear that GT isn't canon by basically making the premise of GT's first episode impossible.
Pillaf and co appear in this movie, infiltrate a party done by Goku's family and friends and end up using the Dragonballs to turn themselves into kids. That basically completely invalidates GT's first episode, where they're old, are surprised by Goku's appearance and accidentally wish to turn Goku himself into a child.

Not to mention, unlike GT, this movie was penned by the creator himself. I ask again, is it any good though?

I came in to ask "how does this compare to Sagas?"

I fucking LIKED Sagas.

Discussing canon in this franchise is silly because no one's ever officially laid down a guideline so it's all up to personal preference. In terms of story Episode of Bardock could very well be canon (it had assistance from Toriyama!) but no one is going to accept Bardock being the Super Saiyan of Legend as a fact. Conversely, a lot of this nu era Toriyama involved stuff doesn't sit well with me. Tarble shouldn't exist, and
fetus Pan giving Goku energy
makes me feel uncomfortable.

Lack luster version of Budokai 3, I question why it exists to this day.

Atari likely funded it. The game was just a bunch of reused assets from Budokai 2/3, and the Data Carddass games Dimps worked on in Japan. Atari's license was ending that year, and they wanted something for the holiday season. It's definitely the best fighting engine Dimps produced for the series, but the game does have some issues with difficulty, some awful mini-games, and game length. It was a budget ($30) release in North America, so I can't complain too much.

I do have to wonder if Dimps pumping out three games within a year (Burst Limit, Infinite World, and Evolution) had something to do with their departure from the franchise.

Why do they include Saibamen as a playable character in these games? WHO PICKS THEM??

Blame Yamcha. Because he gets killed by them the Saibamen have to be an opponent you face off against. Them and the Cell Jrs. act as grunt soldiers to lengthen the game. As the developers are already making a model, and a move set they might as well make them playable characters.

Despite the box art, the Vita version is DD-only in North America.

Wait Spike isn't doing it?? Well this game may have potential then.

I like BT2/BT3, but the last several DBZ games Spike has made have been awful. It's nice to see somebody else is going to give DBZ a try.

This actually looks kind of fun too, it'll be interesting to see what the gameplay feels like

Most people agree that content written by Toriyama is considered canon, and other content is not.

There's a difference between Toriyama's involvement, and Toriyama actually writing the story himself. Toriyama was involved with character designs for Dragon Ball GT, for example, but it is not considered canon, because he didn't write the story.

Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return and Battle of Gods are stories written by Toriyama. They are both canon. Episode of Bardock was written by Naho Ooishi. It is not canon.

Atari was hurting financially at the time, so I find it unlikely that they funded the whole thing. You're spot on with everything else here though.

It probably had more to do with their involvement co-developing Street Fighter IV.

A PS2 game made up completely out of reused assets isn't exactly an expensive proposition for what was Atari's most successful franchise. IIRC the leaks, and eventual announcements stemmed from them too. Namco Bandai obviously co-funded the game since it would likely not been released in Japan, as all of Atari's fully funded games (save LoG2) ended up.

It probably had more to do with their involvement co-developing Street Fighter IV.

Dimps hasn't done a Street Fighter related project in a while (maybe they're working on SFV for PS4/XB1 if Capcom doesn't have the internal capacity) and it seems they're working on a fairly traditional Saint Seiya fighter for Namco ...

There will be a panel at Anime Expo:

According to this interview, there is no split screen.

Is it possible to play co-op on one console?

To play with other players, each player must have its own console. The reason for this is that we want the players to get the best graphics possible, in full screen. Online, up to four players can form a team and eight players can take part in the Battle mode Warrior. Regarding the PS Vita, if you and a friend each have a Vita, you can gather in one place and play via ad hoc connection. That's all we can say about it for now.

Srsly? Not even two player split-screen?
Nah, I don't really understand why they would do that. I don't understand why games either have one or the other these days. Why not have both? I'm already planning on playing online a lot, but I do think that split-screen is essential for a Dragon Ball Z game. It just seems lazy, and just downright unforgivable in 2013.

Can we just get Arc to make a DBZ fighter already? Either that or just make an SDBZ 2. It just doesnt seem like they put much effort into the games post Budokai 3/Tenkaichi 3. Then again Burst Limit looked really good (although it was too short).

That damn theme song always makes me want to watch the show.

OMFGGGGGGGGGGGG

Its literally Tenkaichi(battle system YAS Budokai 2d shit isnt coming back thank GOD) X Sagas(co op) the best games ever in the series. YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Another high five for best opinion.

Fuck Budokai.

Kikuchi BGM? I think I'm gonna import this game, seriously. I need more material to judge this game, though.
The flying animation is crap, though. Running looks good.
Tbh, the boss battle looks much better than Ultimate Blast.
The lack of offline multiplayer sealed the deal, I'm gonna get the Vita-version.

Edit: It seems, that we Europeans will get Kikuchi BGM in this game.

I want to see some online battles in action. Make it happen devs!

Do we get fusion and lose 1 character for 1 more powerful one such as Goten and Trunks into Gotenks?

Does the team share health pool?

What happens when energy attacks clash?

Do we have team moves?

How do you deal with players ganging up like Goku and Vegeta vs Yamcha alone?

So many questions! Need some answers.

Sorry for the pseudo off topic question but what ever happened to that Korean Dragon Ball MMO from years back? Did it ever come to the U.S.?

Also, are there any Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z games for the PC that has online coop?

They've been quiet for what seems like an eternity regarding an American release.

No

It looks pretty shit tbh.
And I bet they will pull that lazy shit where it won't include the Buu arc and it's characters.

I really thought after 2 years we would get a really good DBZ game after RB, RB2 and UT but no its even worse than all those.

You dont even have to do that, Cyber Connect could make an amazing DBZ game. Im not even a fan of Naruto, but the Ninja storm games are good fun, and the visuals are really good.

The main reason I'm even interested in this game is because of Artdink. Their PSP Gundam games have reportedly been quite good, even though Bamco quickly forced them into a yearly sequel cycle that soon got tired.

I can guess they gave Artdink this new assignment because Bamco wanted them on a product that might have a better shot of having worldwide appeal...

These DBZ games seem so mediocre lately. The 2D fighting of Budokai 3 and Another Road are still the best by far to me.

I'm really tempted to post a video of a high level battle in Shin Budokai: Another Road just to show what these games should be like.
