Nintendo didn’t really have much in the way of surprises at E3, and that’s because, as Satoru Iwata says, they wanted to focus on the “video game fans that are eager for information on so-called traditional games” at the show. But they have more in store for this year than just the stuff they discussed at June’s Nintendo Direct, including “new types of games.”

In a meeting with investors recently, Iwata discussed these secret games and explained why they haven’t talked about them yet. “When it comes to brand-new types of games, we have to announce them not too far in advance of the actual release dates in order to have a strong impact in the market and minimize the chance of others introducing similar or competing products. We are working on new types of games, but we would like to announce them much closer to their actual release timings for this reason.

“When it comes to Wii, as ‘Wii Sports’ spread throughout the world at a sensational speed, some misunderstood that all Wii could do is enable them to play games by moving the Wii Remote. With Wii U, therefore, we planned to satisfy existing video game fans first and provide new surprises later.”

They have been saying this for a while now. No reason to get excited. It's pretty logical to think that if they had something truly revolutionizing cooking up then we wouldn't hear about it until relatively close to the release.

I found it sort of odd Wii Fit U wasn't mentioned and they didn't even have a trailer on their E3 site for Wii Party U. Complete 180 from previous E3s so I guess that was part of their new strategy. Still, I'm not so convinced there's going to be much in the way of full retail releases of this nature between now and the end of the year. In any case like Miyamoto points out they'll be dismissed and Iwata knows there's a vocal traditionalist fanbase that wants nothing to do with it as well.

I don't know why, but the phrase "new types of games" makes it seem like they are going to announce some F2P or mobile stuff. I know that probably isn't the case, but when I hear quotes from other publishers and developers, that's usually what it means.

Guess I'll stay cautiously optimistic.

I'm really finding it difficult to believe the whole "we have more unannounced games" angle. I don't expect any groundbreaking announcements.

Dat Iwata! Not taking the competition seriously!

I want this meme taken out back and shot once and for all. It's completely inane and inaccurate.

As far as the games are concerned I'm looking forward to hearing what they have to unveil. I wasn't surprised at what was shown at E3, but what did get shown was of very high quality. Looking forward to some surprise and quality as well this time around.

Could it have to do with the NFC feature? I thought I remember reading that they'll introduce a new game revolving around that sometime this year.

It could be stuff that doesn't interest the hardcore market at all.

Let's not build these games up as Nintendo's ace in the hole.

Brand new "types?" Or brand new games?

Who am I kidding--anything will be better than nothing.

I would guess that these games will be the ones that show off the potential of the gamepad.

Why not lead with this stuff? I can understand why they wouldn't want it front and center at E3, but we're over half a year into this console's life.

I imagine it's their f2p title.

And perhaps some eShop stuff.. they haven't exactly done anything themselves, have they?

Platinum Game's....WiiMusic 2.

Im a bit excited because he implies those games arent what traditional gamers want, their B-tier experimental efforts tend to be my favorite games.

Non sequitur. Pleasing the hardcore market would never be their ace in the hole. They needs a new Wii Sports-level experience.

I'd like to know what he implies by "new types of games." Judging from the last quote, I'd have to guess that it's games that use Gamepad in innovated ways.

You know they anounced an F2P steel diver game?

I'm guessing its the non-gamer games such as Wii U Party, Wii Fit U, F2P Steel Diver game, that mystery NFC title and whatever else they have brewing.
