I sang on the score for this movie, so I definitely hope it does well. It was an unusually fun sing, because we got to sing in Russian and Chinese and capture a number of different sounds. Usually it's all just oohs and aahs.

I'm not seeing it in 3D because it's pretty clear Del Toro never intended it to be that way. Studio pressure was definitely a factor in the post-conversion.

Day 1 though. In 4K.

As I mentioned earlier, the fully CG scenes (i.e. a majority of the fights) will be native 3D since they can be rendered that way, and any "beauty shots" won't have any real 3D effect applied to them.

It's not that though. From wp:

The film was shot using Red Epic cameras. At first Guillermo del Toro decided not to shoot or convert the film to 3D, as the effect would not work due to the sheer size of the films robots and monsters, explaining; "I didn't want to make the movie 3D because when you have things that big... the thing that happens naturally, you're looking at two buildings lets say at 300 feet [away], if you move there is no parallax. They're so big that, in 3D, you barely notice anything no matter how fast you move... To force the 3D effects for robots and monsters that are supposed to be big you are making their [perspective] miniaturized, making them human scale." But it was later announced it would be converted to 3D, with the conversion taking 40 weeks longer than most and Del Toro saying "What can I tell you? I changed my mind. I'm not running for office. I can do a Romney."

Why he changes his mind we can only speculate. I'm willing to bet it was not a creative choice on his part.

The kind of shots he was referring to by that:

The more the ILM shots arrived, the more I realized that there were only a few shots that would miniaturize. I asked the studio, number one, that we would not hyper-stereo-lize the thing. That we would not force 3D on the beauty shots. That we would keep the giant dimensions. They agreed.

So it's more of a compromise than anything - GDT didn't see the sort of effect he was primarily fearing, the majority of the CG elements would be natively done and not post-processed, and the post-processing itself would at least have a lot longer schedule than the standard post-conversion job you'd see for new releases.
 
Well read between the lines there... I'd still interpret it such that he is not preferring the 3D. Sounds like a compromise to me.

It was a compromise that was still in his favor - from what I understand from old coworkers who were on the project, if he didn't get the concessions he wasn't going to go forward with any of it. What was agreed upon is pretty atypical for the industry.
 
Bought my ticket for a Thursday 10pm IMAX showing!

The theater was on the list of participators, I just hope it's the right showtime to get the poster.
 
I've found out that its going to be shown locally on July 12th. My hype levels have rocketed into space faster than a Kerbal rocket launch.

Filmmaking is a process that revolves around the act of compromising. It's matter of upholding a singular vision and quality with each concession.

With that said, I'm inclined to believe Guillermo del Toro ultimately got his wish with the 3D. The notion would have been discarded entirely had it not been to Guillermo and Legendary's satisfaction.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Guillermo sign on to Pacific Rim as a director just after At the Mountains of Madness stalled? Prior to that, I believe he was just co-writing and co-producing the film.
 
I am so excited. This is the shirt I'll be wearing when I see it next Thursday! I got this shirt 2 years ago at Comic-con, as a give away. I had no idea what it was for until a day later when Del Toro announced Pacific Rim!

$180m to produce, probably $100m to market, so $280m budget overall... the general rule with box office is that you need to make twice as much as your budget to break even, so $560m.
 
Cineplex is selling Pacific Rim 'Super Tickets' for the first time here in Canada. Add $24.99 to the price of a ticket and you get the HD digital copy before the Blu-Ray release date, bonus content which may be exclusive, and 500 Scene points (half way to a free ticket).
 
I don't know why, but I'm all of a sudden hyped for this movie.

The same thing happened to me with Prometheus, but dear God, I hope it's better than space vagina.

Even if the story is a complete dumpster fire and every character is a total nutjob, you still got a movie where giant robots fight interdimensional monsters.

saw a piece of it and turned it off, i usually dont like seeing behind the scene stuff until it comes out on blu ray. even then i dont usually like doing that as it usually destroys my perception of the films but i always watch GDT's behind the scenes.

To me it is the opposite. I love them, and I love to see the sets and stage directions. Although I am saving this one for after I watch the movie.
 
I haven't bought an action figure since I was about twelve, but the ones for Gipsy Danger, Kinfehead and especially Crimson Typhoon are so damn sexy...

Tempting.

I bought Crimson Typhoon last night and I can attest that it's a very high-quality figure for under $20. I'm definitely picking up Gypsy Danger next time, and any future figure series that come out.
 
hmm, I don't have toys/action figures of anything at all, not even posters. I must sound like the most boring guy ever. I didn't own any growing up either, but in my defense my parents were religious nuts and never allowed me to put up any posters.

Treat yourself, then. =) Nothing beats the smell of a figure fresh out of the package. Or still in the package, if you're one of those types.

I was never a big nut for figures, save for Gundams, as a kid. Not that I am now, but I have a few of them from the various collector's editions of games I've picked up over the years, plus a couple I bought by themselves.

I'm pretty selective with figures, so me wanting to buy one means it must look amazing.
