Speculation: Could Cerny Lead Sony's Secret JRPG Project (1st Party Answer to FF)?

It's been discussed here that Sony has a super secret JRPG project in the works that will be their answer to Final Fantasy. It's become clear that they need a unique experience for the PS4 now that FF will never be exclusive to them again:

- 'Unannounced JRPG 1' (one I've mentioned before) will end up appearing. And I'm sure this has a good chance to melt the hardcore. It should be successful, at least, on the level of Infamous or Killzone maybe.

- 'Unannounced JRPG 2' will be SCE's second attempt at a big game emulating FF. If this comes to fruition, and is successful, then there is a franchise opportunity which can be exploited. Probably the most experimental project as if it bombs, then they'll never touch anything like it again. I don't think it will though. With the advent of FF15, KH3, and the announcement of FF16 sometime between 2014-2015, Japan gamers will be ready for this. The big question mark is whether they can translate some of that success to the West which will obviously be an aim.

Something struck me when watch Cerny's talk, "The Road to PS4": http://www.youtube.com/watch?list=F...=JJW5OKbh0WA&feature=player_detailpage#t=120s

He tells this story about how he once tried to develop an RPG with his brother back in the 70s, translating the classic paper version into a computer game, but never finished it. Years later he saw his original vision realized when he saw Final Fantasy VII.

Once Knack ships, is there a chance that Cerny could head up Japan Studio's JRPG endeavor? He clearly had an interest in the genre at some point. He's familiar with the team there and speaks fluent Japanese. And his engineering knowledge could ensure the game looks absolutely spectacular.

Folks may quibble about Knack's stylistic choices, but the technical feats of the game are quite impressive. Seeing his expertise unleashed in a game with more aspirations for photorealism and an art style on the opposite end of the spectrum from Knack could make for a striking triple-A IP.

Is this a crazy idea or possible?

advisor maybe... too focused? probably not (who knows though it likely the game is in the second year faze of the ps4 not the first 20)

Legend of Dragoon thread? I'm OK with this.

After seeing Knack, Please NO. Get the team that made Legend of Dragoon back together and see if they can poach talent off Mystwalker and Monolithsoft.

I started a video game adaptation of Magic the Gathering back in the 60s and I finally saw my original vision realized when Crysis came out.

Well it's reaching a bit for sure... but he did spend a lot of time on that particular anecdote in that speech. Very remote but the interest would be there. After all, once the system launches, where will he put his time?

What would make a Sony First party RPG any different to the hoards im of decent RPGs made by other j-Developers?

I just can't comprehend how you could make one stand our from the crowd

Man was Integral to the creation of the PS4 and Sonic 2. After Knack is finished I say Sony should let the man make whatever he pleases. I'll pay attention to any pies he has his hands in. So if the man wants to make a JRPG, for the love of god make it so Sony.

Am I the only one that remembers Legend of Dragoon being pretty mediocre? I'd rather see Sony bring back Arc the Lad or Dark Cloud than Dragoon.

A Sony answer to ff would require a massive team of artists and developers, and an awful amount of commitment and time. These are all things Cerny has never really been fond of. He's clearly more comfortable working in small teams and mostly on small projects or isolated consulting tasks. Plus he's never worked on a jrpg before!

It just wouldn't make any sense to hand such a lroject to Cerny when there are so many more talented and experienced devs and designers out there.

What? Is it true or wishful thinking? Anyway, Sony would be better chasing the Skyrim crowd than the JRPG one... I really don't see Sony investing in a home console JRPG.

If all the beasts looked as good as the gryphon, Trico, in The Last Guardian:

Nice fanboy fanfiction there buddy.

JRPG's are a dead genre in the west and i don't see Sony greenlighting a AAA JRPG project.

Even though I like a well-written JRPG from time to time, this is absolutely true.

It's definitely early to tell anything about Knack, for me it has a cute style but lacks the WOW factor, even tech-wise it showcase particles and shaders more like a benchmark than an artsy purpose.
I mean things like "linger in the shadows" were more intruguing about the visual possibilities of the PS3, but they weren't games.

Cerny on a JRPG that'll have to stand against the FF gfx juggernaut it's kinda hard to imagine, gameplay wise...XV seems to be improving the KH formula, so something more old school but not too much could be nice. (Legend of Dragoon PLZ)

I doubt the veracity of this whole "secret PS4 JRPG". It smacks too much of wishful thinking, and even if it were true Sony doesn't have the talent to make a good JRPG. If SCEJ is responsible for it, it'll either be crap or take forever to come out.

Another thing that makes me doubt this is the JRPG genre itself. It has returned to being niche, so it's a waste of money to make a big budget FF-level JRPG. They're asking for a financial failure.

I just don't see Sony investing much in a "traditional" JRPG since it is, indeed, a dead genre in the west. If anything, these games will probably be literal RPGs made in Japan, rather than the kind of game you think of when you think "JRPG," unless Sony is bankrolling Chrono 3 or something.

I thought it was just one? Unless the Demon's Souls sequel can be considered as a JRPG.

Something like this is more likely.

If it has an artstyle remotely similar to Knack, I will be sorely disappointed. Knack is the most visually uninteresting thing I've seen out of SCEJ in awhile.

Get Team ICO's artists on it.

does buying knack make this surely happen? its why i love the souls series kind of they make you narrate them yourselves which feels more tabletop than elderscrolls dragon age or loot fest baulders and diablo. but thats just mo

Such a flop taste. Especially with the bolded as one of your choices. I couldn't stand that dungeon fest and breakable weapon.
