Nintendo to announce secret “brand-new types of games” for Wii U soon

my guess is that he is talking about the new game from the SM3DW makers, Miyamoto's new IP, Steel Diver F2P and HAL's Wii U project.

The current gaming reality is cooperating with 3rd parties, having powerful systems and making games appealing to the core gaming audience instead of their own specific niche fanbase. If they were a software developer, their approach is fine but as a hardware developer you can't remain so closed off. If you aren't a fan of Nintendo games the console is literally worthless, but on Xbox One if I ain't a fan of Microsoft 1st parties there are many more titles for me to play. They already failed this generation in my eyes by releasing yet another gimmicky and underpowered system.

Oh well as a console manufacture I think they've failed spectacularly with Wii U I thought you were specificaly talking about games.

Besides Wii Party and Pikmin 3, which games?
Mario Kart, Mario 3D World... You know... The games they've shown. Think about it... We've seen what Wii games can look like on Dolphin. Now, the Wii U can play Wii games natively due to hardware emulation. The Wii U doesn't need an i7 for a Dolphin-like boost because it doesn't have to run software to emulate Broadway... It essentially has three of them. Taking that into consideration, Nintendo's games thus far look like Wii code running on hardware that can display it at higher resolutions paired with better textures and reworked lighting... But honestly, I was being snarky with my original reply.

Going back on topic, I kind of hope it is a chess game... I'd spend a few bucks on a Zelda, Fire Emblem, or Xenoblade set to play against others online...

Obviously a secret game of telephone. Iwata says a game concept in a 5 second clip and it gets passed from person to person on their gamepad. They can only listen to it once and then have to video themselves repeating what they heard. After being passed around, Iwata takes the "telephoned" game design and runs with it and claims it's exactly what the fans said they wanted.

Heard it here first!

Well some of that also applies to their software as well. Their games are still appealing to the same people they have always appealed to. They aren't reaching out to the "Call of Duty audience" (I know people hate this notion, but I would say they are an important demographic) and other gamers strongly enough.

I'm not seeing it in the quote? Where?

“When it comes to Wii, as ‘Wii Sports’ spread throughout the world at a sensational speed, some misunderstood that all Wii could do is enable them to play games by moving the Wii Remote. With Wii U, therefore, we planned to satisfy existing video game fans first and provide new surprises later.”

Basically saying that by releasing Wii Sports first people only thought it could do motion controls and that's it. He's saying they released traditional games on the Wii U first to avoid confusion, and now the innovative games are coming.

That's what it says anyway, but I find it hard to believe that's the reason these games were released first. I do have faith they have something up their sleeve though.

They couldn't announce 3D World out of fear that other developer's might steal the cat suit and 3DS gameplay. I shudder at the thought of what other big secrets they're hiding.

th

It better be!

Ah, I see now. That is such a botched way of doing things. Why wouldn't they just release those kind of games side by side. And I find it hard to believe that Nintendo Land, in all of its messy glory, wasn't apart of that original vision. But I guess we'll have to wait and see.........as usual with Nintendo and the Wii U. If it wasn't for the 3DS I would have really lost all hope for them.

And so begins the Secret WiiU Game(s) japery.

Just more "please give us more time!!" excuses in a different form. Thats all this man seems to be nowadays.

A big hub world within the Wii U in which you buy in chunks whatever you want. Could be experiences like in Wii Sports, bowling, tennis, golf, but they could add other types like board games, small puzzle games and more Nintendo Land attractions.

This could continue to grow in the whole life of the Wii U. I really want to be surprised in the good way. This type of experiences could compete with phone/tablet experiences in price better than complete AAA games.

I was wondering why they hadn't announced games that appeal to the Wii sports crowd. At least a new wii sports, was what I was thinking. Well, at least we know they have something planned.
Something to do with NFC, as someone mentioned earlier, is an obvious guess. Other than that I have no idea.

Leave it to Nintendo to give to the world what they do not yet realize they want. Never underestimate Nintendo.
This is probably going to be pretty serious going by how it's one of those things they are not showing until near release since they do not want anyone to copy it... every time they have used that line of thinking it has truly been something groundbreaking. I'm excited.

I would LOVE a quiz/competition game that uses 2 GamePads where two teams each have their own. The question/task is shown on the TV screen. Could be a slowly revealing picture, a person talking about a word, a riddle, whatever.. and each team is writing/drawing the answer on their GamePad. When a team signals it's done the screen will show the correct answer, then "this is what team A answered", and team B must decide if it's correct or not. If not, then Team B's answer will be shown - either for laughs if unfinished/stupid or bragging rights if they were on to it.

That's the feeling I get too, but this would be an extraordinary lie for him to tell considering he's claiming they will be out this year.

Analog stick, rumble, shoulder buttons, triggers, motion controls, touch screen controlled gaming, etc.

Pokemon, Mario, SSB, Zelda, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, etc. Have all spawned clones that had varying degrees of success.

Although the only one I can think of that did it before them was the analog stick.
Oh I'll give you hardware. But what Nintendo game clone has ever hurt the brand of the original? What idea has ever been so crazy that they needed to keep it a secret for as long as possible before release?

What would you be rebooting to?

Clearly, it would be titled, "Muther" and would be a gritty reimagining of Shegasato Itoi's quitessential game, Mother 2 (Earthbound), since it's the most popular of the three. Ness, a hardened detective in a baseball cap uses his baseball bat and Glock 19 to get business done. When Porky, a hulking stooge, walks into Ness's house and announces that Ness's gang has a new leader, a man only known as Guy Gass, Ness must find his contacts within Sound Stone, the underground Eagleland Mafia, and destroy his new rival before it's too late.

Directed by Michael Bay.

It's not really that botched. Xbox 360 did it with the Kinect. PS3 with the Move. Nintendo is just doing what the others are doing. Launch first and get the proper initial impression onto your audience, then you can get away with the "expanding the audience" much easier. Start out of the gate the wrong way and a huge audience will just look right past you.

Wii Fit U and Wii Party are the obvious choice, but those are still along the lunes of traditional games. Nintendo mentioned eralier this year that they were researching the possibility of cheaper games. It could be their f2p games or maybe even budget games. Pishmo and Dillon's Western Rolling were examples of that on the 3DS. Another example is NSLU with a price tag of $30.

I wouldn't be surprised to see games alobg the lines of Pokemon Snap using NFC or even going f2p just ti attract new customers. That may be the reason they don't plan to do a price drop. And "budget" games could mean cheaper games and less risk as they get used to HD development. We shall see.

Don't know about brand new types of game, but they sure seem efficient at finding brand new types of excuses.

They already mentioned Wii Fit U, and Wii Party.

I think we're getting new titles not mentioned yet from Retro, Next Level Games, and other 'dormant' studios(studios that just finished a game and haven't been attached to a new product yet).

I'd like to see Next Level Games take on a updated version of Star Tropics myself. =P

Guys, read the full quote. He's talking about "blue ocean" games. It's not a secret, it's just not the right time to announce it yet.

Next Level Games said they are working on a secret project after Lyigi's Mansuon released. They didn't say what it was or for who it was, but I'm willing to bet it's Nintenso-related. They were also working on something prior to LM2 and put it on hold.

I'd say we are gong to see more Nintendo franchises making a return in smaller ways just like what they are doing with Chibi Robot. Maybe that's heading Wii U as well.

Also let's not forget Iwata promised the exact same thing for the 3DS and said they were making new types of games to appeal to the casual audience and years later none of those games have surfaced. Many of Iwata's claims(learning from mistakes, it'll be different for sure) have ended up being bullshit.

Also I'm sure everyone is watching Nintendo waiting to copy them just like last year when obviously they were waiting to show off the Wii U OS so Sony and MS wouldn't copy their amazing 15 second OS loading features
Exactly. If Nintendo had some astonishing concept that would move the masses they would have launched with it. Not let their system languish for the last 6 months.

Nintendo Land was their Wii Sports and it, and the USP it was supposed to sell people on, failed to resonate. No one wants to copy a USP that no one wants.

This is the new chalkboard entry; the new 3rd party Nintendo Direct with its secret NDAs preventing game announcements.

Yeah, they're obviously doing it right. Attracting that huge audience of 33K in May in the US and 5K a week in Japan. It's clearly all according to the master keikaku.

I bet Nintendo is going to do some form of MMO/online community style game that ties in directly with miiverse.

Also throwing this out there, an ereader app.

A game like Animal Crossing doesn't appeal to the casual market? There's alsoMario Party 3DS coming this holiday, Pokemon this Oct. and Disney Infinity this August.

I'm going to guess that whatever it is, it will make use of that reader thing on the gamepad.

Not going to get hyped, but its great to know there's more in store!

New types of games = NFC sky landers like games with Nintendo characters, that Pokemon rumble game being their "test game" for this new trend.

Feel free to quote me when they announce them, because it will be this, you can see it coming from miles away.
