Mario and Luigi: Dream Team Review Thread

Yeah, the only con I have so far is the pretty slow start. Even though they seemed to have ironed out the kings (according to the latest Iwata Asks) it's still pretty tedious. Especially for people who've played the earlier games. Some, but not all, of the tutorial texts are skippable though.

If it's ok to ask, how long did it take for you to get past them?

Thanks for the impressions. I'm looking forward to reading full fledged reviews

A little off topic, but I've been enjoying Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story for a week. Put in a good 24 hours into it with both Mario and Luigi around level 25 and Bowser around level 24. Last weekend, my family and I went to my uncle's beach house to relax. I carried my 3DS along with a couple of games including BIS. Now during our little stay I let one of my uncle's (married into the family so we aren't directly related) kids play with my 3DS for a bit. I left him alone with it and was sure to put away the games that I didn't want him to touch, including BIS.

A little while later and went into my room to see that my bag was opened and BIS was missing! I ran outside to see him playing it and notice that he's playing at the beginning at Peach's castle, I try not to panic and think "Well maybe he's just playing on the empty profile that was there so maybe my file is still safe". Our conversation then went on like this.

Me: Hey what you playing there?
Kid: Mario and Luigi
Me: Did you go into my bag to get it.
Kid: Yep.
Me: Well you did use the empty file right?
Kid: Nope
Me: What do you mean "Nope"?
Kid: I erased the first file
Me: You're joking right?
Kid: Nah I erased it (he says this while smiling)
(At this point I'm actually telling myself that he's just messing with me and that he wouldn't actually do that.)
Me: (While not trying to sound angry or scared that he actually did it) Let me see that for a second.
He hands me the 3DS, and I soft reset the game, I go over to "Start Game" to see this

Play time: 00:05

Mario: Lv 1
Luigi: Lv 1

My jaw hit the floor
I had no idea how to react...
I look over to him to see him smiling and extremely smug smile and hear him say "See, I told you I did it!" My little brother is right there. He hears what this kid just said and almost instinctively grabs my hand, to ensure I don't do anything crazy. This kid isn't mine and his dad owns the beach house we're staying in. So of course I wasn't gonna beat this kid then tell his dad "But he deleted my save file!" I pretty much just took a deep breath, closed up the 3DS and proceeded to go to my room and put it away... I haven't touched my 3DS since. I of course avoided the kid like the freaking plague for the rest of the stay and I will say that I had fun, my little brother and my cousin made sure of that, they really cheered me up.

However I haven't touched my 3DS since then, hell I haven't been able to get myself to play ANY game for the past week. What this kid did effectively killed my mood for gaming. And now I'm worried if I'll even be able to pick myself up and replay this game to the end so that I can be ready for Dream Team when it hits next month.

Has this ever happened to any of you guys?

I would've created a separate thread for this but as you can see, I'm still a Junior :(

Ah I never played the first game sadly, so I guess thats why I dont see the flaws as much.
But yeah, I definitely remember the final boss.... ha ha.

I have another question for Dream Team...
Has anyone noticed the quality of the 3D model of Mario?
It just really looks like some poor fanmade mario model or something which disappoints me...

You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yli68Q4C1q4
At around 14:06.

They're actually all sprites as far as I know, hence why the battles can have so may Luigi models on screen at once.
Edit: Just saw where you were talking about, yep those are 3D models, didn't look too bad to me though.

When I was little, I had a cousin save over my Pokemon Gold file right when I was up to catching Ho-Oh

One day you will learn not to take review scores, from any publication, seriously.

Edge also gave Skyward Sword a 10, said it justified the Wii's entire existence, and was one of the finest Zelda games ever. Where are Nintendo fans citing Edge as the authority of reviews for that one, ha ha.

The fucking numbers are the problem. It's all just opinions, but the numbers give people something to have meltdowns about.

All perfectly valid opinions. Though I wouldn't give it a 10.

Yeah, all valid. But thinking a number means more because it's from Edge is silly. Some get really emotional when they don't like a number from them.

Got the game, can't play it until tomorrow, sucks ;(
When are we getting an OT? Surely some people are already playing it.

M&L Dream Team |OT| I have a dream team!

Man... that is rough!

I do have a similar experience, though. Back when the N64 was in its later years I had a friend who let me borrow the system along with some games. One of the games was Ocarina of Time, which he had a 100% completion file on. He very specifically told me not to delete the file and of course I said, "sure, no problem." I started a new game on the second file and named Link after myself.

When I was about half-way through the game I went to play it one day and noticed that something was different. The first save file didn't have the right name, but instead it had "ZORRO" and it looked like a fresh file. I started panicking and asked my siblings if they had any idea what happened. My older sister replied, "yeah, I played it. That game is so boring." Craaaaaaaaaap.

When I told my friend what happened he asked me to play through the game 100% to recreate his file. The only problem was, he wanted it to be named "Link" so I had to start over from the beginning... At least OoT is an amazing game, though!

If it's ok to ask, how long did it take for you to get past them?

Sorry for the late reply. The intro (with tutorials) takes about an hour or two. Not that long, seeing as the game is supposed to be around 30 hours long.

So are you liking the game overall? In quality and fun terms, is it closer to Partners in Time or to Bowser's Inside Story?

My worst experience was lending a friend my copy of my retail Super-Cars 2 on Atari ST, and getting back the same disc, but my friend had wiped the game and put the pirated version on instead. My scores were gone. The fucking thing had a virus. He thought he was doing me a favour because it had a 'trainer' on it.

Yeah. I never lent him anything ever again.

Actually that was the end of our friendship completely.

A friend of mine is already playing it, these are so far his impressions and observations:

-The beggining of the game is slow and boring, with so many (some skippable) tutorials.

-After that, the game turns great and promising

-This installment offers the most delightful battles of the series

-You can now save the game whenever and wherever you want, you don't need to use saving-blocks anymore.

-Music is AMAZING, probably the best of the series too

My parents always got upset at me because I didn't like to share my handheld games with little kids but it was because of this kind of stuff.

During the big holidays we would have a party at our house. During one such party some little kid found my GBA, which had a complete Pokemon Sapphire game in it. When I found it I was the proud owner of a game saved right at the beginning.

Another time one of my nephews who was really young at the time found my GBA with Sonic Advance in it. He deleted my save file and changed the language to Japanese.

A friend of mine is already playing it, these are so far his impressions and observations:

I agree with most of the observations.

I will add that the story is not really that interesting, but the traditional humor of the series remains. Also, the Pi'llo "race" is one of the laziest character designs I've seen lately in a game!

The same happened to me but with Super star saga...

My cousin did the same but thinking that the second save was mine because it was more advanced.. :(

The last couple responses in this thread reminded me that children are inconsiderable little shits and shouldn't be allowed to touch anything unless they have explicit permission.

The tutorial stuff is the most annoying thing about this series... How skippable is it?

It's almost as annoying as Camelot scripting in their RPG's.

Almost.

Parents can be awful, too. Giving permission to the children to touch your stuff and then getting mad at you when you get upset about it.

They can't even make a game that gets more than a 7 from EDGE? What kind of bullshit is this? Alphadream still made it, didn't they? It's not some random Canadian dev like LM2, right?

:l

Whoa there, buddy! You didn't just bad mouth Next Level Games, did you?

Has this ever happened to any of you guys?

My 4 y/o son accidentally deleted my game save for NSMB2. I had beaten the game and was working through trying to 100% percent it. He was just as heart broken as I was, and was really upset when it happened.

From that point on, I make sure I back up my SD card every few weeks. Luckily I do, as while on holiday recently, my same son accidentally deleted our LM2 save.

I have no idea why consoles and iOS lets you put in parental restrictions, but preventing save file deletion is not one of the things covered. It's dumb as fuck.

I played through about half of the first Mario and Luigi and loved it. I guess if I start now I should be able to catch up before this comes out

I would've created a separate thread for this but as you can see, I'm still a Junior :(

This has happened twice to me:

The first time was at a New Year's Eve party that my parents was holding at their place. I was playing I-Ninja, and I was about to beat it too. I boot it up the day after the party, and I see my save file is gone. I raged.

The second time involved BIS too! I lent the game out to a friend, since I was too busy with some other stuff. I was about 8-10 hours into the game. He lost the game. He replaced it, but I had such a difficult time getting the motivation to play through BIS again. Though, I have started to make *some* progress with the new game on the horizon.

I remember as a kid at a campground, I had Pokemon Blue with 120-ish captured Pokemon & a freakin' Level 99 Charizard that I leveled up from doing the Elite 4 over & over (not to mention I had that EXP sharer item) and a friend wanted to try it out. I let him play a new game to risk not having my saved data tampered with while I wandered off and did stuff. I come back and "OOPS, I didn't know there was only one save file".

HE WAS NEVER HEARD OF OR SEEN AGAIN AFTER THAT......or rather, it's the reason why I'm very skeptical with others playing my games with save data on them.

There's now a native save backup feature for the 3DS, but I doesn't work on retail games sadly.

I want this just for the music - how bad am I?

K let's see. Lost interest bigtime in Superstar Saga, didn't even touch PiT and I've tried playing BiS on 4 different occasions with different playthroughs and just didn't click yo.

I'm turrible, man!

Damn, now I wish I preordered it. I'll pick this up later this year most likely. August isn't a good month for me. :(

LOL why do you even keep buying the games when they're clearly not for you? Why do you not like about them anyway?

BTW I pre ordered this a couple days ago and can't wait for it to get here. I hope I'll get lucky and get it early like in Spain, the wait is killing me :(

Okay, what if we talk more about the game reviews and less about kids deleting save data? It's quite annoying entering here hoping to read some new reviews or impressions and find people blaming on their nephews. You can open a separate thread for that.

There is a new review (4players), though, and most reviews will release at the end of the week.

God forbid posters occasionally digress from the topic at hand. How dare all of you. I had to click my mouse FOUR extra times to find an arbitrary number given by a publication I've probably never heard of that would be the tipping point between "GOTY" and "Nintendo am doomed."

Superstar Saga bored me, but I'm loving BIS right now.

I love the dexterity based RPG style.
