Speculation: Could Cerny Lead Sony's Secret JRPG Project (1st Party Answer to FF)?

I'm just tired of JRPG style games being found strictly on handhelds.

Like, Ni No Kuni probably had a lot of flaws, but I didn't notice because I was too busy being 8 years old again.

What would make a Sony First party RPG any different to the hoards im of decent RPGs made by other j-Developers?

I just can't comprehend how you could make one stand our from the crowd

Hoards of RPGs? Maybe you experienced a different console generation to me.

I think it was a woefully under-represented genre in the HD gen and ANYONE adding to it is very welcome to me.

I think you're crazy.

Cerny doing a JRPG?
You shouldn't play with my heart like this.

Anyway - The genre simply needs, in this age, fun combat. JRPGs, yes, even your beloved LoD\FFVII, always had extremely boring combat, especially in the endgame (Well, Ozma being an exception, i guess), which was kept going forward by amazing growth systems \ exploration \ story.

FF13(-2), like it or not, was a step in the right direction: But, it having other issues, the fact was discarded.
LO\LS, and i suppose WHK, are stuck in the past. It's like a fantasy third-person sword fightning game came out in 2013, and had LttP growth system.
RPG elements are now basically everywhere; it's about time we get some kind of fun combat everywhere, too.

I do believe there's space for non-tactical turn based combat to work, but it's gonna be an uphill battle. A very, very uphill battle.

I played it for the first time 2 years ago and loved it.

Anyway, is Verendus a credible source? Is he a confirmed insider? I would love if he was right, of course. JRPGs need a presence on consoles again, and what better way to do that than a console maker doing a AAA one.

With information like that? I'd say a heaped tablespoon of salt.

No on knows that kind of detail outside of the teams conceptualising them. And even then they may never go into production.

He worked on Sonic 2, Crash Bandicoot 1-3 and Jak & Daxter 1. He was also a design consultant on the PS1 Spyro games, Uncharted 1, God of War 3 and a bunch of Ratchet & Clank games.

I have faith in Cerny.

I have no faith in SCEJ besides PD though, as they are worthless and take forever to get exactly nothing of value out the door.
But what the hell does a "design consultant" actually do? Sounds a bit like his influence on those games could span from 100% to 0%

I think there's still plenty of room for JRPG's on consoles but there needs to be a way to cut the development time down. That and there still needs to be a combat sweet spot. FF13's basic system of fast and reactive combat is good but the intricacies of it need to be tweaked so it's not so tedious.

Personally, I still love the basic ATB turn based combat but I can understand why others aren't interested in seeing it.

As far as Cerny being in the role of an advisor, I'd like to see that but I think it would be best if he oversaw the technical side of things. Helping to deliver great performance while maintaining high quality.

You are so PRESSED about the Gaf insiders. Always saying they have 0 credibility in literally every thread. Even though you're wrong! Are you ok?

What are the odds that LoD, a game that's going on 14 years old, a game that's reception at the time was lukewarm at best, a game that is therefore only barely remembered in places like this is coming back? Why does it even need to come back? There is very little cache in the name, characters or story at this point. It's 14 years old with nothing in the interim to suggest that it is a viable franchise.

If they brought it back it would need to be a complete reboot. This wouldn't upset me, the original is dire, but what would be the point? They may as well start with a blank canvas and make something good than build on the dusty remains of a long discarded game that failed to achieve what it was meant to.

edit: also, back on topic, if we are to assume that such a project is underway then why would SCEI change the project's director or producer at this stage? If such a project isn't underway, what in the current market suggests that SCEI should expend effort on a JRPG? Better off having it made second or third party, where at least there are studios with expertise.

I am only as right or wrong as them. Stuff like that is up in the air, and doesn't deserve the attention it's getting.

Yes I am massively bothered by these GAF insiders. And every opportunity I get I'll tell people to use common sense to decide if it's worth believing, rather than just believing it.

Legend of Dragoon thread? I'm OK with this.

Don't get people's hopes up!

But yeah, if Sony has a first-party JRPG in the works I'm excited as hell, regardless of who's leading it.

I'm going to go negative mode for a bit:

* Legend of Dragoon was mediocre at best. I remember renting it back in the day and being too bored to keep playing before bringing it back.

* If Knack is anything to go by, I have serious doubts about how a Cerny led JRPG would turn out.

POSITIVE MODE ENGAGED:

I am curious to see how a Western led JRPG would turn out. I'm surprised we haven't seen more takes on it. Consider me interested if true.

So... what has this Cerny fellow been up to this last generation? I didn't follow gaming news very closely until 2005 or so, but have been pretty well informed since and... I never heard of this guy until the PS4 reveal. I didn't see his name mentioned once on GAF in all my time here.

And now he's everywhere. There are posters saying he's some legendary Miyamoto-level figure in the industry (he may be?). What has he been up to? Which PS3 games did he have a hand in? Yes, I could Google him, but I'll get a better answer from a GAFfer.

High budget JRPGs are system sellers in Japan. It makes perfect sense that Sony would be working on one. Keep in mind, AAA JRPGs weren't flopping this gen, they just weren't being made because few AAA Japanese games were coming out period.

The question is rather they are ps4 or vita games. For a FF scale I am looking at ps4 title.

Is Panopticon one of them? It looks really interesting but kind of a bummer it's for vita.

I remember Legend of Dragoon being so bad, but I can't remember why. If they're going to bring back an rpg, maybe something like the PS2 Arc the Lad game, but I'd rather be it a new IP.

Why is there a cult of personality around Cerny? He's a great guy no doubt but I think he is not on the same level as a Miyamoto, Suzuki or the best in the industry.

What Sony should do is make a AAA western style RPG akin to Skyrim, Fallout or Mass Effect.

i wouldnt say it was lukewarm it sold just shy of 2million, and thats pretty good for a new IP, and wasnt the psn version on the top 5 for 5 months straight, i would say its more than viable, at this point they jsut need the drive to just do it

Cerny? I don't care really care about honestly. Guys a genius and all, I respect him and the rest of the guys back at Japan research and console development, but right now I want Level 5 doing a collabaration with SCEJ.

I think the best SCEJ games are collabarations with other studios.

Come on now, let's be honest. Ni no kuni was a massive improvement for them over White Knight Chronicles but they are still not exactly awesome sauce.

After White Knight Chronicles, I don't think a lot of people are wanting another collaboration.

Oh I wasn't talking about White Knight Chronicles or Ni no Kuni. Both are games that don't appeal to me.

And I'm not looking out for anybody else, I want this for myself because I am a selfish gamer.

I want level 5 to make a srpg similar to Jeanne D'arc for PS4 or Vita. I was a spiritual successor to Jeanne D'arc.

Do it Level 5. Screw everyone else who asks for some other BS.

Hope its true, its the one genre Sony is completely lacking in.

Personally I don't really care. They don't have a first party studio for it, but its much easier to contract other studios to making an exclusive for their platform.

But I think that overall, Japan Studios deserves a much needed boost in support.

I think Sony already has that covered though since they seem to be going in the direction of letting AAA games go multiplat, and focus on investing more in SCEW and indies which is a smart decision.

I prefer complete exclusives over timed exclusives anyways.

I don't know anything about "unannounced jrpg-2" but we do know Cerny is working on Knack and selling the PS4. I highly doubt he is already on another project. And like others have said, the game doesn't fit his M.O. at all. He prefers small teams.

They generally have been, but that was likely a big reason why Sony appointed Allan Becker (started SSM) head of the studio. They massively restructured just a little over a year ago as part of bringing him in, and that is lines up with about the time Cerny probably got the ball rolling on Knack. They look to be intent on bringing SCEJ up to pay with the other major regional first party divisions.

What Sony could really use is a strong WRPG.

After ME3, I wish another dev team could pick up on the space sci-fi RPG genre and given the polish that is generally associated with Sony's first parties' offerings, one of them would make a good candidate.

In general the realm sci-fi WRPG is sparsely populated in the current gen (Fallout, Mass Effect, Deus Ex) and so I'm hoping things would change next gen.

Yup sounds like Guerilla will check this box. They're new IP is an RPG and they clearly adore sci-fi settings.
