Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

I've been holding it in, but I shed some tears reading all the nice things from Dave Lang, Will Smith, and others. It feels so unreal. It's going to be so hard to enjoy Giant Bomb the same way I used to. These guys made my shitty days at work so much more bearable, and hearing Ryan say "It's Tuesday!" was always a great start to an otherwise stressful day. He really will be missed.

Having a night to sleep on it, the loss of Ryan is affecting me the same way MCA's death did last year. They're both guys who's creative output I devoured on a nearly daily basis for a number of years (MCA for longer obviously) and now they're gone. I'll never hear a new Beastie Boys song, I'll never hear/see a new Ryan Davis bombcast/video. Still, I'm gonna forever cherish what they left behind. I'll always take the time to listen to Paul's Boutique and I'll always take the time to watch Ryan and Vinny play Harry Potter games.

Thanks Ryan Davis.

I never realized how sad I'd be when one of the GB crew died. I just hate that weird feeling of never getting to hear or see him again. :\

You know what, I would be absolutely OK with this.

There's probably no chance of it happening, though.

Rich's wife is a lawyer, so I doubt he'll be moving back out West any time soon.

But I do agree that they'll probably have to hire a new editor at some point. I can see them eventually bringing over one of the Gamespot staff. It's a shame Danny's over in Europe. Right now, I think he'd best fit in.

Man, the childhood photos from his father's twitter account posted on the last few pages is a little more than I can handle at work. The thought of a father losing a son so young is so heartbreaking.

Man... really curious what this means for the site. This really is the big 'con' of a small personal site thing, if one thing is amiss, everything changes. Like Voltron missing a leg.

Ryan did do a bunch of behind the scenes stuff... I guess them hiring another dude down the road is highly likely. hmmmm...

Stuff is still surreal...

Jeff would never let the site end. In fact, he'd probably be more determined to push it forward. I bet any ideas Ryan had will be top billing.

*quick edit, nevermind, found it

I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see them try to record something this week or next. It would be difficult to sit and do this quick for sure but I could see them going for it as a sort of tribute to the man and what he would want.

Don't think my heart can handle the liveshows and the bombcast this week :(

btw what is that koffing pic a reference to?

That Olly Moss print is the same as the blind boxes he's been selling.

I would buy a Ryan one for charity.

Its so sad that Jeff said that, only a couple of days before he passed away. I think its safe to say, Jeff will never play TLoU now.

Everything about this is just so tragic: Being wed 5 days before, how happy he looked with his wedding ring with Vinny, he excitement about wanting to share his wedding stories on the bombcast...etc...etc

Its all so heartwrenching

Yeah, it was the day before he died. I finished TLOU yesterday. Emotional fricking day.

surprisingly, it was Justin McElroy's thing which finally busted my tears out for real.

Yeah that one hit me pretty hard as well. If they headhunt anyone established in the industry he would probably be the only one I could see just click. Though I doubt he'd leave his home or Polygon.

I gotta say I think this is a pretty absurd thing to say. They may all not be in an emotional state to play that game immediately, but they'll all play it eventually. Certainly before the end of the year.

Great work from Olly Moss as usual. Reminded me that there's a bunch of artwork on the walls of the GB set, which is going to be sad to see during shows. An important reminder and tribute of course, but sad nonetheless.

Indeed. Maybe now is not the time but they're professionals and they will play it.

Man, the Game of the Year stuff is going to be fucking brutal to watch or listen. The mood will be pretty depressing.

I know it's been said, and I understand I don't know these guys personally, but I can't stop thinking about fucking devastated Jeff is. Those guys were very obviously the best of friends. I cannot imagine losing someone like my brother this young. I'm not sure if I could recover.

Have they said whether or not there will be a bombcast today. I know it's Tuesday and they never miss a cast but... yeah... I just need to hear Jeff, Brad, and Vinny tonight. I know it's going to be hard to not have Ryan but I at least need to hear these guys speak on it.

Nothing announced

If I ever hear Jeff speak about this, and he breaks down. I'm going to lose it. I'll be making sure to listen to that episode locked in my room.

My brain keeps jumping to the idea of this being some kind of Joaquin Phoneix/Andy Kaufman style hoax. It just seems so surreal.

To be honest, even at this point I know I wouldn't even care if he popped out of somewhere laughing. You got us good Ryan, making us look like a bunch of pussies as you giggle!

Seeing Jeff cry is the absolute last thing I want to see. Ever.

McElroy's one of the handful of good, witty writers in US games journalism. He's just not great at the games end of things. Like he really wants his career to be in games but he should be a comedy writer or something.

I've always said McElroy should get into comedy instead of games journalism.

Check out his podcast My Brother, My Brother and Me. It's pretty great. Justin is incredibly funny.

(You may already listen to it, ignore me if so).

This wonderful eulogy by Jenn Frank (former EGM I believe?) practically sent me over the edge:

God damn man. Can't imagine what's going on in the minds of those closest to him
Great stuff. She's definitely right. So neat how all these guys reconvened at Giant Bomb and just pushed ahead in order to make it happen. The GB crew really knocked it out of the park in the regard.
