Seems smart. You wouldn't want fighting game fans to get excited about the next game in the series which comes out at the end of the year on two Nintendo platforms. That would be madness.
This is the stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done. How is it humanly possible to defend this?
This isn't the stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done.
Apparenty a video game not being streamed at some tournament is worse than the virtual boy, the Wii U name and Friend codes.
Considering how much Nintendo cares about the competitive side of games I wouldn't be surprised that they just figured out "oh yea that EVO thing is around the corner, should give those guys a call".How come evo got informed so late about this issue, evo is in 2 days right? Is nintendo doing this out of spite or something leaving it so late? or was it sloppy organisation all around?
The Virtual Boy was more like a four month old fetus that got out of the womb prematurely. The virtual boy was ahead of its time
Nintendo of America's response:
lol.. This is pretty dumb, but come on. This is no where near the dumbest thing Nintendo has ever done.
EVO didn't region lock their streams. Fans will be so confused if they see the NTSC version being played as the things they are viewing may not be appropriate for PAL regions.
Anyway I just sent a PM to Maxilmillian in case he hadn't heard. Hope he does a video on this. He has amassed a good number of subscribers and is one of the more level-headed fighting game ambassadors.
The Nintendo I grew up with is gone. They had their last hurrah on the Wii.
)
This so much. Nintendo is not in a position where they afford to piss people off.Nintendo, stop doing this. You don't need even the smallest bit of bad PR right now. Go back to your room and think about what you've done
i kinda feel this way too. i've disagreed with plenty of their policies before, but this is the first thing to happen that just makes me not like them as a company. they always seemed like a friendly company at least, until now.
Can people still videotape it the fights and post it on a later date?
it's a 12 year old game on the Gamecube. makes no sense.
Right, one mattered.Regionfree was a much bigger deal and they still shot it down with PR bullshit.
...I'm okay with this. But yeah, it is unfortunate for anyone who was looking forward to catching SSBM without attending Evo in person. It's being replaced on the stream schedule by Persona 4 and King of Fighters 13.
Yeah nothing will top the Virtual Boy and the entire launch of the WiiU.
The decision is 100% Nintendo's fault but how do you not ask NoA about this as soon as Smash won the contest? Skullgirls or any other game with a more competent developer should have been getting the free hype.
lol.. This is pretty dumb, but come on. This is no where near the dumbest thing Nintendo has ever done.
Hmm, possibly. There is room open to that, sort of, in Ponder's post on SmashBoards:Can people still videotape the fights and post the videos on a later date?
Ponder said:It's with a very heavy heart that I must report some bad news. I'm sure you're all aware that Nintendo is tightening it's policies around uses of it's IP by 3rd parties. We have just been informed by their legal department that we do not have permission to stream SSBM. We will, of course, honor both the letter and the intent of their request. All broadcasts of SSBM, both official and unofficial, will be forbidden at Evo 2013. Though I understand everyone is disappointed, please do not setup bootleg SSBM streams on your phones. Doing so would put the entire tournament in jeopardy. Anyone at Evo who broadcasts SSBM will be immediately disqualified from the tournament, their passes will be revoked, and you will be asked to leave the premises. You are, of course, free to take whatever pictures or videos you like for your own personal enjoyment at the event.Since it cannot be broadcast, we will be moving the SSBM finals to Saturday immediately following the Semi Finals (est: 2:00 PM).
You guys worked very hard to get to Evo, and you should be proud of what you've done for your community and the millions of victims of Breast Cancer around the world. Even though there will be no stream, we think Smash is going to be one of the highlights of Evo this year, and we're proud to have you guys be a part of it!
It very well might be.
Max is already aware of the situation if you check his feed.
Isnt it too late to do something now anyway? At least for this year's EVO. I would at least assume that the broadcasting schedule is already set now, and that it would require some extra work to put up one extra stream (i think it would kinda suck if they canceled some of the other streams now at least).
Nintendo of America's response:
When's Mahvel.
I was going to comment your original post was pretty offensive to the people who donated money to breast cancer victims, but alright
Still, you are misunderstanding the gravity of both campaigns. Region locking involves far more than NoA and probably has a lot to do with hardware itself, while this one case is more of a policy regarding video streams which is, at least in terms of an US competition and pointed as much by EVO staff, related solely to NoA.
The fact both are campaigns doesn't mean they are equivalents.
