Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

i kinda feel this way too. i've disagreed with plenty of their policies before, but this is the first thing to happen that just makes me not like them as a company. they always seemed like a friendly company at least, until now.

Nintendo tends to be D-bags from time to time, Nintendo being D-bags is why PlayStation exists.

I never understood the lengths to which Nintendo didn't want Smash to be competitive until just now. To go as far as to ban EVO from streaming it too. Come on, how can I support this?

I told you, Azure. I fucking told you

I wanted to believe that it was all growing pains with a pinch of lost in translation and shit was working to get more progressive within the sprawling mire that was Nintendo. Instead, we get dicked over in the most hilarious of ways in an era of gaming where everyone's sharing/streaming/experiencing something. To think a community as legendary as the Melee community did actual good to get their opportunity only to get shit on last second. Nintendo has their shit together enough to do this, but can't pull their collective self out of the sand long enough to understand the significance of this move in a 2013 world.

Disgusting.

lol.. This is pretty dumb, but come on. This is no where near the dumbest thing Nintendo has ever done.

I agree, this is nowhere near the level of stupidity of them going with clunky old cartridges for the N64 and alienating many 3rd parties from developing on their system because of how much memory they held and how much they cost to manufacture. In doing that they helped Sony and the original Playstation by effectively driving 3rd parties like Square over there for a while.

However in more recent memory, this is one of the things that makes the least sense NOA has done over the past few years that I can remember. "Like what are they even thinking?" is my thought on this right now.

Reggie knows what EVO is. This is not the first time Smash is at EVO. This is just Nintendo being pure assholes right now. If they were going to do this, they should've said something after the donation, now a couple of days before EVO when people have booked their flights, spent their life savings just for this moment, etc. This is the lowest Nintendo has ever gone.

+ Skullgirls losing their place against it.

Nintendo doesn't out-right own all the intellectual property in Smash Melee - my guess is that this isn't from Nintendo but from the licensors of the IP contained within (likely Pokemon Company IMHO).

None of those licensors really has any reason to raise a stink about this, and if they did Nintendo should have put their foot down and told them why doing that would enrage people more than anything else. There's a small chance that IF this is the scenario at play that they tried doing this, but I doubt it.

The 3DS has plenty of great games from Nintendo and the Wii U is not even one year old, I know people are mad over this but it's no reason to start saying crazy things.
I'm not a handheld person. MK8, Bayo2, Zombi U and W101 are the only things I care about atm. Not gonna give a fuck about Smash after Brawl. It is a wait and see there.

I feel for you man. At least your moment of clarity was fast and furious like a giant bandaid being ripped. I came to the conclusion that Nintendo is crazy messed up over years as the Wii rotted to death.

I was so enthusiastic since I heard SSBM was part of the Evo stream. I have no friends to watch SSFIV with, as I've been doing for the last however-many years. This year, I could finally share it with my SSBM-friends.

Good way to shit on their parade, NoA. It just wouldn't be Nintendo if it wasn't completely mindless.

This is just the right time to do it in Nintendo's mind. People are so flabbergasted and busy that they can't possibly mount a defense. Nintendo likes to go for the heart the first chance they get.

Technically this isn't the first chance, it's pretty much the last. They waited until nearly the last fucking second. They should have spoken up earlier, during the time of the charity, that they wouldn't want their game streamed. What this became from then to now was fans getting excited to donate money to a good cause and seeing their game live on stage in high levels, and now Nintendo just swoops down like "lol don't get your hopes up". When one of the benefits of being the top game was final day streaming, Nintendo should have said right then "we don't want a part of this". I doubt NoA wasn't aware of this drive either, it had to have picked up some attention somewhere in NoA with the amount of money it raised.

okay someone at Nintendo of America has decided to be a giant dick

likely some dumbass lawyer trying to justify his employment with less litigation going on

I wonder if it's a matter of setting precedent.

Like, if they didn't enforce copyright here, they'd be open to challenges over their Youtube Let's Play claims.

I absolutely think the two are linked.

I think this is a matter of Nintendo wanting to be in control of how their games are played in front of a large audience. It's a marketing concern more than anything, I imagine.

This is a completely ridiculous and altogether STUPID move on their part, but I'm willing to bet it comes down to their lack of control over how their game will look on the stream, and they'd rather remove the game from the stream entirely than have gameplay broadcast to hundreds of thousands of people that doesn't fit into whatever their marketing vision might be.

Because those two don't have anything to do with region-locking. Sakurai has plenty to do with this game.
I think it would be better to contact the higher ups in Nintendo (or for any company for that matter) rather than contacting the consumer support if someone wants to give the comapny their opinion. I think it would have a better chance to reach the people in charge when contacting the people higher up in the company at least.

When was the last time Nintendo did something that benefited the fans? Come on, Nintendo! How can anyone mishandle their IP so much and with such consistency?

Off the top of my head, free unity license for Wii U games. Or maybe you don't like Indie games.

How about the two for one special of Fire Emblem Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei 4 where you buy both, you get $30 on the eShop free.

This really sucks, but the tourney organizers really should have made sure everything was square before promising anything. I'm really surprised they didn't make sure they had Nintendo's okay.

I'm not the biggest smash player or fan, but this is disgusting.
The community raised so much money and showed their love for the game and they can't even stream it? This would improve the publicity of the new smash so much.

Isnt it too late to do something now anyway? At least for this year's EVO. I would at least assume that the broadcasting schedule is already set now, and that it would require some extra work to put up one extra stream (i think it would kinda suck if they canceled some of the other streams now at least).

No they had a stream schedule set up with Smash in it already, if this decision is reversed, they can put Smash back in the time slots it had before.

this is inexcusable. i was really excited for this. being able to stream here should've been treated like an honor. this is so backwards it's unbelievable.

Guys please read my earlier post --- Nintendo doesn't out-right own all the IP in Smash Melee --- I'm betting the Pokemon Company came out and complained because they have exclusive rights/decision over all streaming and broadcast-related use of Pokemon characters

And Kadey raises a good point, people have already put a lot of time and energy into this. Shameful shit.

I was hyped to see it, too.

It is also possible that Konami or Sega complained
I don't buy this for a second. This could have been figured out ... how long ago?

All I was saying is that Nintendo of America doesn't listen to fan campaigns.

Operation Rainfall?

I'm not trying to defend Nintendo's position here, I'm just saying there are bigger odds this is something that NoA itself could handle (and that has a heavy PR connotation due to the donations going to a breast cancer research organization) thus has a chance of success over, say, region locking, which is surely way beyond their reach.

I don't think SSBM should've been at EVO in the first place! I would have rather seen VF or DOA5 at EVO. But I'm disappointed the SSBM matches won't get streamed! More exposure to the game might've made me interested in the upcoming sequel.

Absolutely mind boggling why they would do this. I am honestly reaching the end of my rope with this company. How many more times will they let me down before they make an honest effort?

if you think they're ever going to change or become more self-aware you're out of your mind

The community really should completely snub Nintendo and Smash from this point on. Unfortunately memories are short, and when the next Smash comes out, everyone will rush to pick it up.

Some are bigger than others, for example, the Pokemon company and game freak. I doubt they care about EVO but if they were the issue, I have heard negotiating with them is a bitch.

Why am I a Nintendo fan? Fuck this company. Shitting on people who donated as well as the community at large.

FUCK THIS COMPANY.

FUCK OFF NINTENDO!

Honestly they should give the stream time to Skullgirls.

Best way to salvage this since both fanbases fought so hard to get in by donating to a good cause.

Wow, how can Nintendo be so fucking dumb? It's extremely saddening especially after how Melee fans worked so hard to get into Evo in the first place.

Oh it is, but at the same time you are overstating how much of a gaffe this one is. You did call it evil if I'm not mistaken, and I can only think of one thing in the top 10 of Nintendo fuck ups that was truly malicious.

I still think pulling this days before Evo is some pretty high level maliciousness, yeah.

Why would Konami or Sega complain? It's not like they have characters in this game.

Edit: Nice stealth edit.

I get the feeling the people that made this decision at NoA don't know the specifics on how Melee got placed in EVO this year.
