Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

You know that post in the fund-raising thread that said the Smash community was looking for competitive support by the developer and legitimisation in the eyes of the FGC?

Well, both are now officially dead. Looks like Skullgirls won in the long run.
We won something? I'd get it if we got an extra slot for semis or something, but we got nothing extra.

No they had a stream schedule set up with Smash in it already, if this decision is reversed, they can put Smash back in the time slots it had before.
It is probably possible indeed, but i think that would be unfair for those who got those slots filled instead (King Of Fighters was one of them i think). That is why i was thinking of setting up a new stream instead.

And Kadey raises a good point, people have already put a lot of time and energy into this. Shameful shit.

I was hyped to see it, too.

I don't buy this for a second. This could have been figured out ... how long ago?

Subtract Sega/Konami since that was Brawl

I'm speculating obviously - but Nintendo about-faced after the Let's Play videos - I can't see them worrying too much about broadcasting competitive Melee unless TPC complained

Wow, looks like Nintendo's finally started to try to kill competitive Smash. I feel really bad for the Smash fans, after raising all that money to get in and now no one will be able to watch. Hell, I feel just as bad for Skullgirls for barely getting beaten by a game that won't even be streamed.

Why the fuck didn't Nintendo come out at say this after the fundraiser. There's no way they didn't hear about it since it was a big deal for quite a while. It's like they just wanted to openly spite the competitive Smash fans by doing this 3 days before EVO.

With all the dumb decisions from them lately it gets harder and harder to support them.

That sucks and is pretty short-sighted of Nintendo. They probably could have pressured them into running some promos for the Wii-U/3DS game or whatever.

Nintendo at least has to go into detail why they're denying broadcasting access right? Just saying "nope" is going to continually make people more angry.

Evo is a very important piece for any fighting game to grow a big fan-base. Imagine the positive effect SSMB at Evo would have on the next Smash Bros.? Free advertising, no, Nintendo doesn't want that. Being a part of the biggest fighting tournament in the world? Naw.

To be blunt? Melee, as a competitive fighting game, is dead. No major will bother with it after this. I think this is the first time that a fighting game tournament has been told to not stream a planned game, and I expect the tourney organisers to see this shit and simply not bother with it.

what this is really about is the FGC pushing a game that's two generations old instead of brawl.

Nintendo has a new Smash coming out soon, and Evo streams something that's two games old instead of the last entry, and that doesn't fit with their messaging, especially since Melee isn't playable on WiiU.

It's a ridiculously stupid decision, because you'd think getting any free publicity for any game in the Smash series would benefit your next release.

I really don't know why NoA has become so ridiculously dickish over the last three years or so.

I still think pulling this days before Evo is some pretty high level maliciousness, yeah.

I highly doubt it was done as a "fuck you" to anyone. If it was than it would definitely be much worse, but I don't think it is. It really wouldn't surprise me if NoA didn't even know about Melee's inclusion in EVO until today, let alone the charity.

You say it's dead but in fact Melee at EVO is the biggest Melee tournament in the history of the game.

Technically this isn't the first chance, it's pretty much the last. They waited until nearly the last fucking second. They should have spoken up earlier, during the time of the charity, that they wouldn't want their game streamed. What this became from then to now was fans getting excited to donate money to a good cause and seeing their game live on stage in high levels, and now Nintendo just swoops down like "lol don't get your hopes up". When one of the benefits of being the top game was final day streaming, Nintendo should have said right then "we don't want a part of this". I doubt NoA wasn't aware of this drive either, it had to have picked up some attention somewhere in NoA with the amount of money it raised.
I never said it was the first or last chance. I just said this was the right moment to throw the entire fanbase and any possible response in disarray.
From now on you sure have WAY more possibility to get on EVO the next years. If the community continues to exist of course.
Yeah, it doesn't work like that. Smash was never even a consideration for all these years. Them being gone from streaming doesn't change anything.

The community really should completely snub Nintendo and Smash from this point on. Unfortunately memories are short, and when the next Smash comes out, everyone will rush to pick it up.
While this decision pisses me off, screwing Sakurai over is not the way to respond. He makes good games, and I will continue to purchase them.

Could indeed be that the Melee pick shamed them in some ways so someone high up pulled enough strings to bitch about this. I hope they don't get away with it. This is anti-gaming.

Now a top (the top?) P4A player can't make finals due to the schedule change :(

Steve ロードナイト@P4EVO ‏@LordKnightBB 12m
i scheduled a flight home at 7am sunday because i thought the final would be friday. so, i cant play in top 8, sorry.

Yes, but I agree with his point that this will cast an enormous shadow over the community, and will cause tourneys to probably not pick it up and/or not stream it due to fear that Nintendo will C&D them.

Sony: press a button and share your gameplay videos!

Nintendo: shared gameplay only supported locally. Please understand.

Smash has 700+ players pre-registered. All walks of life from kids to people as old as Sakurai himself and multiple countries and continents. Nintendo basically gave them all the middle-finger.

Nintendo dick moves are the most hilarious.

I'm disappointed there aren't as many people defending this as I thought.

The guys who began the "Region Free" movement should take a look at this to judge what Nintendo thinks of them in earnest

But in purchasing them, you support a dumbshit company.

It's always been the problem. The devs are generally great people you want to support. The publishers always make the ass-backwards decisions and fuck over the consumer. But you can't (in most circumstances) purchase only from one of them.

To those communities. Why do you think people complain about SSBM getting canceled now? Its the same situation of other streams, no?

But the community that wants smash there is bigger right? It just happened, I don't think if this decision is reversed, it would hurt an community.

They are throwing out having 50-100k people watching other people lose their shit over how fun Smash Bros can be.

Its pretty damn indefensible. Its literally a decision they made that echoes the sentiment that they are completely out of touch with the people they're trying to sell products to.

Yeah, but I mean they can still always try. It might be an issue where it's because EVO is a company or something and therefore can't profit off of it, even if they just do it to sustain, or something like that. It might be because Sony is sponsoring the event, who knows.

You guys are funny. Smash is not a fighting game, its some kinda platform toss people over the side battle system pokeman children's type game. Evo is for fighting games people.... fighting games.

Unfortunately that is the exact method that needs to be done. Nintendo needs to be hit HARD for their outright arrogance and shitting on their fanbase. Sakurai is innocent in this most likely, but maybe if innocents got caught in the fire, Nintendo could see what they are doing is silly and wrong.

What could they have to gain by not allowing it? the game is 12 years old and I think it has sold all the copies they possibly could from the Gamecube discs, its not like it is still on shelves. Just ridiculous.

I still can't get over this. I'm not even in competitive gaming and I'm still disgusted by this. They better fix this shit soon.

Knock it off with that stupid ass non-sense.

What burns me the wrong way is that Nintendo had half a year to warn people that they didn't want Melee streamed.

What do they do? Wait until the final 5 days before EVO starts to say something against it being steamed, rofl.
