Nintendo of America not allowing SSBM to be streamed at EVO [Up: Decision Reversed]

Really...bad news about video game happenings only exist on Kotaku?

come on now...

Noel Brown wasn't any major news channel or website.

The only "bad video game" shit that makes the news is shit that has nothing to do with video games anyway. It's when some serial killer does something and everyone tries to link it to video games

You have a Dudley avatar but I'm guessing it's just a joke or something because you seem to have a huge problem with the FGC.

What a smart company would do:
1) Pay for a dedicated stream of the game.
2) Have intermittent commercials for the new Smash Bros.
3) Have two character reveals during Evo weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
4) Fly Sakurai out for a panel to discuss the future of the game with fans (let him see how much fun people have playing competitively).
5) Use the opportunity to talk about what great people Nintendo fans are for helping breast cancer research funding.

What Nintendo did:
"No."
This. It would be an amazing opportunity for them if handled in the right manner. Unfortunately, Nintendo doesn't seem interested in taking advantage of it.

I love Nintendo, but I'm really not sure what they're thinking with this one. -_-

This is also the other lesser part of the equation that makes me wonder how they think. This is THE opportunity for them to step out into the world with a move that would most definitely generate the hype.

Instead we get nope.gif'd.

When you put it like this... It's even more upsetting. *sigh* These are some dark days for Nintendo

Was Nintendo approached when Melee was put on that poll? Just asking.

Bwa haha. This is the real deal right here. Players in the video game industry need to get comfortable with the idea that they're going to have to get permission from the content providers before streaming their shit. It's coming soon. We'll start seeing disclaimers up front like with the NFL or PPV events. Only a matter of time. Express written consent. Lol.

what I hate about this is that fans put money into this

I'm sure there are people out there who donated significant amounts who won't be at EVO in person and will now be missing out on the hype and the history

lol - I didn't put words in your mouth. Do you really think ST or others could have made up that money?

Really?

You're a genius.

Charities should send proxies door to door and ask for donations while promising a 1:5 chance to win a million dollars. Then just keep the money. They can't complain! It's for a good cause!

Last year The Pokemon Company International hired the current owner of Smashboards to be in charge of the Video Game Championships stuff.

I wonder what NoA thought about that? >_>

Azure is one of the many reasonable ones. I'd still label myself that way, but after today...

"Fan of Nintendo's games but not their fucked up policies" would be a more accurate label, right? :p

I'm not sure what that means? They're the big N?

Nintendo is innovative as far as their hardware is concerned. Their policies suck, and they always have.

That statement is both true and false.

However look at the bright side, without their shitty policies and business practices PlayStation wouldn't exist.

Seeing as I never understood SSBM (not just how it's played but why there is a segregation between the Smash community and the FGC), I was looking forward to seeing it streamed. Especially considering the charity drive (raised over $90,000) indicating how much the Smash community wanted their game at evo. This is made all the more unfortunate considering that Apex (the world's biggest Smash tournament) will no longer be around.

But NoA barring it from it being streamed, preventing exposure for those who have never played, or even know what it is, and with the Wii U sequel coming (free marketing opportunity) makes zero sense to me.

The only hope I have is taking into consideration their decision reversal on the "Let's Play" videos centered around their games. But it's a long shot by far, since that reversal took a long time, and evo is this coming weekend. I really feel for the Smash community.

As more time passes, I feel Nintendo is showcasing a very transparent continual loss of touch in regards to cultural changes, and ultimately are alienating their staunchest supporters. It's honestly sad to see.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Don't harass Sakurai, he's stressed enough with SSB4 without having to hear complaints about something unrelated.

The 3DS has plenty of great games from Nintendo and the Wii U is not even one year old, I know people are mad over this but it's no reason to start saying crazy things.

They had a great offer on 3DS where you got a free game after you buy three.

Sorry, but I won't punish Sakurai or Nintendo over the actions of NOA's legal team.

This comes from NOA, I don't think Iwata is even aware of EVO.

I'm just saying don't attack the wrong persons here.

I don't defend corporations

Not defending their policies regarding streaming, but did EVO/competitive smash fans put the thing through NOA? And when did they do it?

What's wrong with that?

Was Nintendo approached when Melee was put on that poll? Just asking.

You're doing great work Ambassador.

First Fighting is Magic gets C&D'd, then Nintendo shuts down the Melee stream. Which game was the runner-up for the charity contest? Because that's the next game to get the EVO curse.

My mind is full of fuck. Smash had one of the higher number of entries, and I loved watching the Apex finals so I was looking forward to seeing some top Smash play. Call me selfish but... social media wizards, assemble!

So WB/NRS and Microsoft/Double Helix.

But oh wait, those are "moneyhats".

I wonder if the higher ups at NCL just don't really like this kind of thing and are tightwads. If that's true, NOA is a real case of shooting the messenger.

Isn't that everyone? Everyone at heart is a Nintendo fan so we all should be upset.

Yea that's basically it. Just a lot of snarky fanbase insulting going on in here, pretending that trolls, the attention-hungry, and children represent the entire fanbase. Obviously if the Nintendo fanbase would do anything to defend Mother Nintendo, this would never have been as big of an issue to begin with.

Agreed

This is just a continued trend of Nintendo telling us how we can and cannot play their games.

Nintendo removed sequence breaking in Metroid Prime
Nintendo aid videos showing people they must walk in Mario games
Nintendo trying to kill the hardcore Smash community

Nintendo hates it when people play their games differently than Iwata does.

You haven't listed one positive Nintendo policy in this exchange. You only continue to assert that I'm wrong.

I welcome being wrong, but let me know how wrong.

They definitely could have played up point number 5 for some mainstream press. That's the sort of stuff the morning news shows eat up.

"Fan of Nintendo's games but not their fucked up policies" would be a more accurate label, right? :p
That would be me, but they barely make games I would be interested in these days. Mario Kart 8 and Pikmin 3 are the only in-house stuff from them I would like to play at the moment.

Is there such a thing as a pseudo-Nintendo fan? :p
Holy shit lol
I think it is a fair thing to say. Sakurai is just a developer and one under stress and pain at the moment. The suits are the ones whose arms need twisting.

As I continue to consider why this bothers me so much (it shouldn't, I don't even care about Smash Brothers), I think I've reached a way to articulate my frustration.

Nintendo's problems with online go much deeper than simply still using friend codes. That is just a symptom; the disease is that Nintendo has, for a long time, either not taken networking seriously or has viewed networking as something which is actively hostile to their business interests.

That is the real core problem. Getting rid of friend codes entirely and finally creating a standard account system does not fix this problem, unless its accompanied by a genuine attitude change. It won't fix the problem because what constitutes "good" networking is a rapidly and constantly moving target -- just 7 years ago iOS didn't exist, Android didn't exist, Facebook didn't exist. Youtube had just been created. Online communities and general networking are advancing extremely rapidly, and so when Nintendo finally and reluctantly accepts a standard account system, they will already be even farther behind because the competition is smart and dedicated to the internet as a social tool. They are constantly moving forward.

The solution, then, is not any individual step or fix, but a totally new perspective; Nintendo has to embrace networking, and not just view it as a check box that needs to be ticked. It has to view the internet -- with all its Zelda porn and illegal streams and 8 bit emulators -- as a friend and ally. Every time they do something like block Smash Brothers streams, it suggests they still intrinsically feel that the internet is their enemy to be beaten down, and that is the core problem which needs to be fixed.

Because if they don't, they will keep falling further and further behind those who do.

Maturity, bitches.
4) Fly Sakurai out for a panel to discuss the future of the game with fans (let him see how much fun people have playing competitively).
I've seen how the Smash Boards talk about Sakurai (with classic lines of thinking like Sakurai doesn't even know what Smash is about) so something like this could only lead to disaster unless they insure no one in the audience could make a sound.

I don't understand the logic. Not only is this free advertising, it's awesome free advertising when the best in the world are the ones showing off your game.

Totally agree, Nintendo could have used this opportunity to show off the new SSB game for Wii U, at a fighting game tournament by showcasing the best players from a past iteration. Free advertising gone down the drain.

Sony and MS add streaming tech to consoles and partner with twitch etc. Nintendo lives in the 80s and thinks they can still compete.

Social media has become such a big part of gaming now, Sony and MS are right at the forefront of this and Nintendo have completely missed the boat and it's going to hurt them when PS4 and Xbone launch. Social sharing of content is the best free advertising you can get. Can you imagine seeing a video on your Facebook news feed from a friend of their unbeliveable killstreak in Battlefield 4 and not thinking "fuck, that was awesome I need to get this game!" Doing cool shit in a game and sharing it with your friends instantly is going to spur your friends to get that game and join in on that cool shit.

The players raise 90k for charity to get their game at EVo and have their players in the spotlight for 1 weekend and Nintendo shits on it.

C'mon Nintendo.

This is the thing that stings the most, the Smash community is doing something worthwhile, charitable and non-profit and Nintendo have come in and completly shitted all over the hard work of the organisers and competitors involved. Unless it's something to do with a licencing issue, there is no way anyone can spin this positively for Nintendo. They have shitted on the fanbase and now this stigma surroundd the new SSB game for Wii U.

I love playing Nintendo games on my 3DS and Wii, but this is just plain batshit fucking stupid. I can see the headlines now "Nintendo doesn't care about breast cancer research" and so on, you know people will run with it.

No, you need to find a few twitter accounts for prominent Nintendo employees.

You can tweet at Nintendo's regional brand accounts too, but that's probably akin to talking to a wall. That's not how the #NoDRM campaign found it's success.

I unfortunately Nintendo don't have many open employees as powerful as someone like yoshida or boyes.

I would tweet at Bill Trinen. He's their most visible exec.

Also - dont be so hard on them for this decision. If EVO didn't let them do a rev split on stream advertisement I would understand their position. Tournament organizers on their level should have rev share in place just like MLG, ESL have for their games.
