And that has what do with anything? They stopped a tournament that people were preparing and planning for, I am fully darn aware that the game still exists.
no no no, they stopped the streaming of the tournament. The tournament still goes on.

so, how many are not gonna buy SSB4 after this incident?
The real question we should all be asking here is who at Nintendo actually made this decision. I'm inclined to think this is not a decision being made by either management or the marketing department, and I'd be surprised if either of them were consulted in the first place. What we have here seems to be a legal department run amok. It wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that legal made this decision independently, and didn't even see the need to confer with other departments over what they saw as "blatant infringement". Did they recently hire a bunch of people who used to work for the RIAA or MPAA or something? I'd expect this kind of boneheaded legal kneejerk from them.
While Evo is the biggest fighting game tournament in the world, it's still a small event run by a community of dedicated individuals. They don't have funding for stuff like lawyers. At least, that's my understanding of the situation.Agree 100%.
That said, it does seem a little silly that an event as large as EVO isn't more meticulous with this sort of thing. Do they not have lawyers to ensure everything is in order? I would have thought this would have been an obvious thing to check.
But even if they didn't file the right paperwork, NoA would be stupid to not give EVO a pass. Not only does it act as a force of goodwill and advertising, they don't exactly have the most favorable position (both in terms of business and public opinion among fans) to be able to afford a move like this.
I do think Nintendo will bend, though. There is already so much outcry. They reversed their (also silly) LP YouTube policy, I think it's fairly likely they'll do the same here. (Doesn't make it any less stupid or damaging at the moment, though.)
no no no, they stopped the streaming of the tournament. The tournament still goes on.
This is fucking nuts because not only is it a ludicrous comparison but who wants their shit streamed on Youtube?
Fuck the Bears btw
Oh it is?
I noticed this philosophy Japanese companies even outside of the gamin industry. Johnny's entertainment police the hell out of YouTube and they even take down simple dance covers if it has the a song of theirs playing.Hahahaha, what? Wow. This is 2013 and they really still don't get it. And by "they" I mean the heads of NoJ. It's literal free marketing. What revenue do they think they're losing out on, it's not like they'll start producing vast number of Let's Plays in all kinds of languages themselves. Think of all the tiny devs that would absolutely kill to get their games covered even a fraction of what nintendo games get from the big Let's Play channels. So ridiculous.
Being an executive of NoA or NoE must be an excercise in not constantly smacking your face with your palm.
Well shit, who cares what the service is? I just want it to be free and fast. I hate going to the bar and HBO Go fucking sucks in my neck of the woods. Why is the comparison shit? I'm honestly asking. Do they charge people for the EVO stream or something?
Oh, you're all laughing now, but as soon as Nintendo figures all this newfangled stuff with "streaming" and "internet TV" and "facebooking" in 2021 or so, they'll be the hippest company in town again! What a smart company would do:
1) Pay for a dedicated stream of the game.
2) Have intermittent commercials for the new Smash Bros.
3) Have two character reveals during Evo weekend (Saturday and Sunday).
4) Fly Sakurai out for a panel to discuss the future of the game with fans (let him see how much fun people have playing competitively).
5) Use the opportunity to talk about what great people Nintendo fans are for helping breast cancer research funding.
What Nintendo did:
"No."
They could really benefit from having a guy like yoshida. He did some things completely against Sony's old Japanese corporate culture during the times when Sony had it. He is the guy that gave the very first PS1 dev kit to a western team when they were only for Japanese teams at the time and he recognized mark cerny's potential, then helped nurture him into a very good relationship with Sony.

Gonna have to tweet to @NintendoOfDaBeech.Can they stream Nintendo games at Da Beech?
Capcom games have been at EVO for over a decade. They've been at EVO since before it was called "EVO." Capcom threw their own international championship before anything like EVO was in place, too.Apparently prize money in the fashion it's awarded at these tourneys breaks some of Japan's strict gambling laws, and Japanese games companies don't seem to be aware of the differences with western laws. I heard it took Capcom a while to come around and eventually back tourneys like Evo.

But....
NO.
Searvants need to serve their master, alwyas loyal no matter how may slaps to the face one gets.
Take it easy with Regie, he's just a marketing person not much say in desicion making.NOA: Free exposure for our products? Yeah fuck that.
Jesus Nintendo, you have no fucking clue what you are doing. This confirms it.
All of the brass needs to be put out to pasture, including Reggie and Iwata.
Keep the developers, they are great. Keep Miyamoto and Trinen obviously, but the rest of the executive level at Nintendo hasn't done anything positive in a long long time. They fucked up the 3DS launch and price, they fucked up the WiiU hardware strategy and launch games and price, they fucked up with 3rd parties. The stock has tanked since the Wii wined down. They crack down on all the wrong things on Youtube and now EVO. Their online strategy is half assed.
I don't know what more evidence that you need. These guys are incompetent and growing more incompetent by the day it seems.
Big N, I love you guys, but you are being lead by people who have no idea what the industry has turned into, right beneath their noses.

Yeah, the "desicion" was stupid (altough I repeat it was not even a desicion, the way copy righted material works whitin Nintendo is set in a sacred stone and no one could change that), NoA is not going to call NCL over this "hey can we make a little exception about this Mr. Iwata?", no, is not going to happen.0.
Seriously, Nintendo fans are the sheepiest of the sheep. Sad but true.
NOA: Free exposure for our products? Yeah fuck that.

This amounts to Nintendo sponsorship. Which amounts to Nintendo endorsement. Of an event they have no control over. And then someone yells f** n***** f** on the stream and welp. I can understand legal's reticence. Nintendo has a very particular image to uphold.
Not that I think this still isn't horseshit, but they sure ain't gonna support something like this that they aren't running.
I have never heard of UltraDavid doing pro bono work, though that's not to say he doesn't. As I'm not well-informed in law myself, I can't answer your first point. Are there not legal issues associated with prize money and things like that? I would think they'd have to take care of all that in some way.
Also, it's been awhile since I've followed anything FGC-related, but I thought UltraDavid was a lawyer and helped out with some of these sorts of legal things? Or did I just make that up?
Regardless, it still doesn't excuse NoA. They should just give EVO a pass on this one, or at least try to work out a quick deal.
No one is saying that this old ways are retarded and short sighted, but why you would punish a good game over this, even more Sakurai who is putting all his hearth in this project?

Of course that's all bullshit if it's true Nintendo streamed their Pokemon tourneys last year. Maybe Nintendo wants to hold its own tourneys for their IPs. I could sort of, kinda, MAYBE understand its reasoning if it wanted to support hardcore Smash, Pokemon, and Mario Kart tourneys on its own terms.
So what happens when I say that in Mario Kart 8 in an online race? Everyone has a microphone because of the gamepad.

It... MUST happen.
Well you are supporting for desicions like this to continue on.Sakurai didn't pull the stream. He's working harder than ever and if he puts out a good game, I'm buying it and a Wii U. Just because some out of touch executives benefit from it doesn't mean Sakurai doesn't deserve it.
I am done with Nintendo.
Grew up on NES, SNES.
Graduation gift was an N64. Camped out on a freezing launch night for GCN.
The problems have been written on the wall for a long time though.
Screwed up Nintendo Playstation. Refused to change media.
Changed to gimped media. Refused to change generation.
Changed to gimped generation. Tons of archaic policies, mostly Japanese.
Sony got it. You can't survive following every Japanese tradition. Just because Nintendo started as a card game 100 years ago doesn't mean they have to continue to operate that way.
What percentage of their revenue is JP vs the world? I'm sure handhelds are dominated by JP and the rest of the world makes up their console revenue.
They let IPs die, continue to ignore fan wants and continue with region locking.
They got lucky with Wii, and it printed money. Enough revenue must be in reserve or coming in from Wii U that they are happy enough to just continue what they are doing.
Meanwhile NOA comes off as a big waste of space with no balls. Effectively they cannot or will not do anything unless big papa JP lets them.
I can't even anymore.
