75% COME ON GIPSY!

Now the movie has more to fight against then just bad monsters. Now they have to fight bad reviews, too? Wasn't the marketing bad enough?

This is the part where the pilots suddenly tap into the consciousness of everyone they've ever known, encouraging them to go beyond their limits and deliver a series of final blows to the super final monster so powerful that all of humanity is in awe of being able to witness such a glorious salvation.

So is the male lead the biggest issue, in your opinion?
No, he's not the worst thing about this movie. The soundtrack's my biggest issue, since it's mostly mood music once more (I like the main theme, though). I'm honestly not certain if Hunnam could have rung a better performance out of his lines—many of them state the obvious and try to position him as a daddy figure to Mako (which is also useless). But he's okay, definitely a victim of bad writing. Many of the other characters are rather memorable.

About collateral damage: the residents of Hong Kong
get safely evacuated, with no sign of casulaties
. They show this in the trailers anyway, so I don't get that complaint.

People have a new excuse with these
Movies.. Collateral damage. Why is this an issue among movies all of a sudden its ridiculous

It's like how the latest way to slander mecha vs. monsters is by comparing it to tokusatsu shows and Evangelion. This is another reason why Pacific Rim ought to do well at the BO and reverse the way people think of monster movies.

Welp, it's back down to 75%.

I'm not surprised: the script needs a lot of work for me to call it excellent, and most critics pay more attention to that. But I don't think the issues I have with the cast and script damage this film as much as it does for them.

Yeah, I read the script a while back and was a bit disappointed. The scripts not a dealbreaker given the type of film at hand, but I was definitely expecting a lot more since the screenwriter is responsible for one of the best unproduced screenplays I've ever had the pleasure of reading (Killing on Carnival Row).

Funny: I figured you would loathe the script. It's not very good at all, not that it needs to be. I never felt insulted by how it panned out, but Travis could have done much better.

just found out on kojima's twitter that shinkawa did the Japanese poster art...

I need to own this.

Japan does Mechs
West tries to copy
Japan responds.

Honestly even the negative reviews get me hyped for this.

So what is the verdict on the 3D. Yay or Nay?
I would do it without. I felt like it made the water scenes a bit blurry sometimes (this can also be attributed to bad calibration so it can vary with theater). But it was definitely on the better end of the 3D movies. But I don't care for the 3D anyways so if you're into it, go for it. It won't hurt your enjoyment of the movie.

It isn't an issue in movies. It's an issue with the context of a movie. MoS shouldn't have been about Metropolis getting demolished while Superman punches a bad guy in the face.

And it shouldn't have ended with Supes just casually making out while hundreds of people likely were buried under rubble. That's the problem.

Kaiju movies have always been, in larger part, about the destruction of cities. I mean, Godzilla is essentially a giant allusion to the nuclear bombs dropped onto Japan during WWII.

You get it. Thank you.

Anyways, tickets bought for 9:45 tomorrow night. 2D, since the theater jacked up their prices on 3D. Besides, the 2D showing is in the auditorium that had the bowel loosening sound when I saw Star Trek Into Darkness.

Oh wow, this is a misleading title. Way to be a Debbie Downer.

For those wondering without wanting to click (I don't blame you, I only clicked because I was wondering what the hell was going on), it's an article that says Pacific Rim is rotten on Rotten Tomatoes... Because of the top critics score, which nobody looks at anyway.

It's currently 60% with top critics anyway.

Why they want this movie to fail????? WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't the whole reason they fight in [open] sea to avoid collateral damage?

Fucking reviewers. People get paid for that too. Can you imagine that? Dreadful.

I'm seeing it at 8:30 tomorrow night in RealD. Didn't feel like paying the extra $6 for IMAX when I haven't been to one in years. Last time I was there, the glasses made things much too dark, so I didn't wanna chance that still being the case.

Yup. And whenever reviewers claim there's no tension in the battles because the humans are going to win, they're conveniently overlooking some of the ridiculous stunts the kaiju pull in this one. Just about everything but the kitchen sink gets used to win the battles and save the day.

I'm going to bail out of this thread, discussing movie concepts is too close to spoiler territory for me.

Unfortunately I can't contribute to this film's opening weekend take due to a wedding across the country. But I'll be there for weekend #2! Lincoln Square Imax!

Seems to be getting a Fast Five vibe from a couple of years ago. Just a lot of over the top fun that is pretty satisfying. I guess I will find out tomorrow.

I promised my son I'd wait to see it with him, but now I have to go a weekend earlier to get the poster. Anyone think I should just buy the ticket, get him the poster and leave. Or just see it and pretend I didn't.

Tough call. Could just wait and go for the RealD poster

Just got my ticket for tomorrow. Apparently, they're giving out the posters for all the showings in the theater I'm going to. Or at least that's what the dude said.

Still got the IMAX ticket at the earliest showing just to be safe though.
