Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

I think I've found what I really really hate about this game: unnecessary equipment roadblocks preventing me from continuing with quests. In pretty much every other MMO I've played, the designers lock access to quests based only your character level, and nothing else. But for some unfathomable reason Yoshida thought it would be a brilliant idea to lock off quests based not just on what character level you are, but also on what level equipment you have.

So right now I'm a level 10 character, but I'm stuck and unable to continue with the questline because apparently I need level 5 equipment in all slots or else I'm considered "too weak" to continue on with quests. What the hell was Yoshida smoking when he made this game? Why put in all these unnecessary roadblocks? How on earth is this good game design? The amount of unnecessary hand-holding in this game is ridiculous as well. The game treats you like an idiot too stupid to tie his own shoelaces, let alone play games.

I am pretty sure the entire point of that quest is to make you aware that you can supplement your gear by purchasing it from vendors. It's the only time it will ever happen.

Or do the quests around town before then since a good chunk of the quests basically reward you with the level 5+ equipment you need.

True. However, when I got to this point, I still needed to purchase the legs, as I didn't get any from the quests I completed.

A friend in my Free Company said she needed to purchase the gloves.

Yeah, I was missing my pants as well. I didn't even think about purchasing some from a vendor (because I mean, really... in most MMOs, you never buy gear from regular vendors lol). I complained to my friend about not getting any pants for that quest, and he told me to go buy some by the vendor 5 feet away. I felt rather silly. :P

So does race/god choice matter much in the long run?

Only if you want to look adorable in the long run.

Lalafell ftw.
:P

But no, it doesn't really matter. The difference between races is very minimal.

Seeker of the Sun Mi'cuties all the way.

Midland Hyur take a close second.

Both forms of Elezen are growing on me slowly.

Lalafel are fun, but they just don't work for me. Though the Ul'dah Sultana was adorable.

Anyone else think that Marauders do too much damage?

Cause I do.

Early on, they seem to do a lot of damage so you can solo with them. Remember that the first dungeon isn't until level 15. Also, MRD get an AoE damage skill earlier than other classes, making them look a bit OP. Later on, the real DPS classes get their AoE damage skills and also a lot of damage boost, and they easily sail right past MRD in damage dealt. Even at level 30, I can feel my MRD's DPS ability leveling off even as other classes are picking up speed. I'm guessing by 50, MRD will definitely be only for tanking and no one will take one for DPS.

Well apparently the game isn't doing enough hand holding...

The game literally does not direct you to the next quest hub. You're supposed to wander around lost until you find it. This is the only glaring omission in the otherwise comprehensive tutorials the game gives you early on.

Is there anything like professions in this game?

You know those bonus stat points you are awarded after every level? What stat should a Pug put those into?

So I am a weaver now. Is there anyway to continuously make items? Or do I always have to go back to the menu to synthesize yarn?

Also is there anywhere in Ul'dan to become a leather worker?

There are eight(?) crafting classes and three gathering classes, if that's what you mean.

Strength.

No bulk options yet, I'm afraid.

The leatherworking guild is in Gridania.

Damn, are they adding it in? Also I assume I cannot buy lightning shards, just get them from monsters?

You can also mine for shards. Mining guild, hooooooo~

Also, I'd like a way to continually craft trivial materials at least. The crafting interface is actually pretty neat, but doing it every time I want to make one copper ingot is kinda meh.

Wow, so I tried forcing SGSSAA using Nvidia Inspector like someone posted earlier. The performance penalty is incredible. With a single GTX 680, I was seeing framerates going from locked 60fps down to 25fps during busy scenes. Come on Squenix, fix your AA so people don't have to do this!

In 2.0, crystals only really come from Gathering classes.

oh god, I am glad they changed that.

Yeah, I don't mind it so much when I am making a shirt or whatever. But if I need to turn 12 leaves into 6 yarns and then into 3 uncolored spools or whatever it takes forever.

Wonder if I should restart on Ultros at this point? I made decent progress on Leviathan, but it doesn't seem many I know are there afterall, and those that are are on Ultros anyway. Just how fast CAN I really blast through the early stuff?

I imagine now that I know what I'm doing, I'll have Lancer to 15 in a few hours after Beta 4starts.

I don't feel like it really starts slowing down until 20ish, and even then, knowing where to actually be helps a lot. Chain fates will get you leveled stupid fast.

I got most of my jobs to 50 in 1.0 but I'll be starting over as well.

It's probably best to go to a world where you can get into a good FC. If you don't know many people on Leviathan you should come over, as we seem to have a pretty healthy FC on Ultros.

It wouldn't hurt to transfer your leviathan character to sargatanas if you wanted to play with GAF.

I know we might be a little biased but, how do you guys feel about Realm reborn's chances of success? Has SE done enough to change the stigma of 1.0 plus overcome the monthly fee?

Because of how fast you can apparently level, I wonder if they will level cap Phase 4 too.

Possibly. From what I understand, Beta 4 is supposed to be pretty short, so they might not bother.

Unrelated to this: I understand there is Free Company housing in the works for release. Anyone know if it's in for launch? Or any details on how it works/what it provides?

Is there any gladiator armor better than Heavy Iron before the level 32 set?

Yes, the armour from Haukker Manor.

Housing is planned for 2.1, that's about 3 months after launch.

can someone give me the link to where I can sign up for the PS3 beta? d'oh!

Also, I played 14 before the servers went down for ARR, but I have since cancelled my account. Is there a way for me to play as my character again?

Someone told me a long time ago that eventually you get a quest that lets you dye clothes. I looked around on the internet and someone says you need to be a high level weaver (I think the specific lvl was 15 but I'm not sure since I saw this last week) and eventually you'll get the quest to learn to dye clothes.

So is this legit, or do I just get the ability to dye clothes as I continue on main quests?

Do we have any idea of when phase 4 begins yet?

I just read:

Giant Bomb - All current and former players who have purchased the original Final Fantasy XIV for Windows will get A Realm Reborn at no additional cost in the form of a new client download

Wait does this mean I don't have to buy the game again, even though I haven't touched it since 2010? If so that's awesome i've been ready to put down the money!

Oh my, that is a huge relief. So glad it's just a main quest.

Actually it's a very simple sidequest. All you need is to buy an orange juice from a npc (you also get them as quest rewards) then run all the way west from Uldah to the little port town where the ferry to Limsa Lominsa is. There is a lady sitting to the right of the aetheryte crystal, she gives you the quest to dye gear. Just hand over the orange juice and she gives you a few pots of dye and the ability to just dye your gear from the armoury menu. :)

Not sure what the level requirement for the quest was though, as I was already lv50 when I did it.

I did the quest before they transfer the 1.0 chars, and with level 12 you can do it.
