Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

Just got back from a 10pm screening with six of my buddies.

My God, this movie is dumb. Every time they tried to draw me into the universe with something, they'd throw a terribly delivered line or some stupid comedy thing at you.

But you know what? I don't care about the negatives at all. It was a ton of fun and entertaining as hell. We had a blast passing around cans of beer and MST3K'ing it while having an awesome time watching GIANT ROBOTS FUCK SHIT UP ON THE SCREEN. Loads of references to Top Gun and Independence Day alongside the mecha and giant monster tropes.

Saw it last night. As a properly huge mecha fan, I liked the silly action bits. I also adored the movie for not overcomplicating things.

It is a great, fun watch. The only thing it lacks is staying power.

Oh, and all those nods to anime series and Gojira. So good.

watching this on the weekend. excited for the mecha/kaiju action.

but...it's guillermo del toro..what did you expect? lol
Hellboy and Hellboy 2 are shakespeare in comparison. Both are better movies too.

This is probably del toro's weakest movie since Mimic.

I wad shocked at how legitimately awful the movie was for the first 45 or so minutes

the movie makes it seem like
the time between the initiation of jaeger program to the current time of the movie was a time where jaegers were steamrolling all the kaijus (since they were just weak scouts) so a prequel might be kind of boring action-wise i guess. i mean striker eureka was to be decommissioned during the movies so i guess humanity was pretty confident

I thought it was more like
from the initiation of the jaeger program to the first battle shown (I.e. when his brother dies) the jaegers had been dominant and quite popular (celebrity pilots etc) but then in that 5 year time skip, they started loosing badly which is why the politicians decide to shut down the program and build the wall instead, would also explain why there are so few jaegers left and only one Mark 4 (Crimson Typhoon) and one Mark 5 (Striker Eureka) since they stopped developing new ones

Meanwhile at Variety, the top story on the front page:

Well yeah, I mean look at that image.

ah yeah your'e right. totally forgot about skip

So, it's bad? Damn.

It's a fun movie about giant robots and monsters kicking the shit out of each other that doesn't try to be anything but that for the vast majority of the time. If that's not your thing then that's understandable, but I wouldn't call it a bad movie by any means, especially when the main focus of the movie (the action and GCI) is pretty incredible.

No, it's not bad. It's a lot of fun and entertaining. But it's dumb and you should turn your brain off and enjoy the ride.
I don't enjoy movies where I have to turn my brain off, sorry. Certainly not at cinema prices. I'll wait and rent it.
It's not good. It's enjoyable though.

It's a movie about CG mechs fighting giant space lizards, what do you expect it to be?

Man of Steel was bad because it was so serious and unself-aware. This is way better.
I was expecting it to be bad, but hoping it would be better than just 'Hey look, explosions and robots and monsters yeah!'.
Pretty much.

I was hoping it'd be more than it appeared to be in the trailers, but it isn't.

If it ends up bombing like the early projections were saying it would, it's well deserved.

Bugger.

Or you could stop taking the opinions of Debbie Downers and judge the film on its own merits.

I agree with all of those reviews.

It's paint-by-numbers, it's 1 dimensional, it's cheesy, it's dumb, it's over-the-top, but despite all of that it still works.

I enjoyed myself even though I could see the entire story before it was shown.

Exactly. It wasn't ambitious in the story it was telling, but the film was still really fucking excited about having mechas fight big aliens. That's all I needed and it was incredibly fun.

Just got back, it was everything I wanted it to be. I loved the Kaiju designs, and the fight sequences were amazing. Thought the ending was a bit lackluster, but a very satisfying movie overall. In the back of my mind, I was hoping for some really ridiculous shit to happen
Gurren Lagann Style
but it was still incredibly epic.

+1

Dead Man, did the poor RT rating stop you from going to MoS?

Judging from the fact that he chooses whether to watch a film or rent it based on singular GAF posts, I bet it did. :P

In all seriousness, go see it ASAP! Don't drink the haterade!

The designs were really fantastic. Kaiju and Jaeger.

Just got back from this movie, and all I have to say is this is what a "popcorn flick" should be.

Was the acting the greatest? No, but what in holy hell are you going to see a giant robot vs. giant monster movie for? The plot was cliche, I could predict almost everything before it happened (with the exception of
the awesome random wrist sword from nowhere
), character motives and backgrounds have all been seen before, but it still was a great movie.

Never before have I accepted the advice, "turn your brain off". As far as I'm concerned, Michael Bay is no longer allowed to have a free pass while this movie exists.

I don't like the RT metric, I don't follow it, but I have still not seen MoS yet.

Pay money to judge the film to see if I want to pay money to watch the film?

Or, ask for opinions, and use those as PART a decision making algorithm in combination with trailers and my general agreeance or not with the people who offered opinions.

It's not the worst idea to go see a matinee. It's not expensive. I'd probably recommend seeing it in theaters because of how good the special effects were.

It's $15 here. I can rent it in a few months for $2. I'm not a fan of explosion to the point that better sound is worth $13.

I was hoping for a deeper movie that also had explosions. It's not that, that's fine, I don't have to love every film that gets made, I'm, happy it did get made regardless.

Dead Man, think of it as a 2013 version of Independence Day. If you think a movie with that tone would work for you 20 years later, you'll probably be able to dig this.

Seriously, every action scene in this movie puts the Transformers movies to shame. Even in dark, rainy conditions, I could still enjoy and comprehend what was on the screen.

I will be cancelling the apocalypse in a few hours! Yay!
Have fun!

Good decision.

Is my cinema just bad and or was it just really hard to make out what was going on during fights? It was so dark all the time.
I'm going to guess your cinema was just bad. I watched the movie in 3D (Which to my knowledge is darker than normal) and had no problems catching what was going on the screen. The slowed pace of the combat really helps in that aspect.

Not to mention how "real" the robots felt. Unlike the cheap, light, plasticy feel of Transformers, everything had weight behind it. These were gigantic robots.

Lol at people expecting it to be Citizen Kane , Apocalypse Now or The Godfather part 2.

How deep is Pacific Rim? Somewhere between 300 and Jurassic Park.

It's a gorram monster movie. It does what a monster movie should. Which is to let me escape reality and take in the fantasy world of these events taking place, make the audience feel.for and cheer on the protagonists and hate the villains.

The same critique should be used against The Host, and.all other kaiju movies. This is The Dark Knight of kaiju films. Don't judge it the way you do independent films, this is for those like me who wanted to see their Saturday morning cartoons grow up with them.

Did you watch it in 3D? I could perfectly make out what was going on.

I went to this film expecting a live action Saturday morning cartoon. I got more than what I paid for. This is everything a mech/giant monster movie should be.

Eh, if people want to judge this movie a certain way, let 'em. I'm just happy that I enjoyed it so much.

Yep. It says a lot about the feel of the robots when clips of a robot just walking are dynamic, cool shots on their own.

The only fight in the Bay Transformers films that I actually enjoy is this one. It has only two combatants, both combatants are visually distinct, transformation is used in a dynamic fashion, and every move is easily distinguishable. It still has the problem of the robots lacking "weight", but I like it anyways.
