Good question. I saw it in Imax and my loxal.theater only has avx, so I shall go see it in avx Tuesday. IMAX is massive though. I think there ultimately will be a difference, perhaps just sit a bit closer for avx lol

i figured better to get premium centre ultraavx seats than shitty IMAX ones on the side.

I've decided to cancel my plans to see this movie tonight. I've had my fill of this type of cringe worthy dialogue this summer.

Will Ultra AVX be "good enough"?

IMAX screening only has crappy seats left. I got amazing seats though for the ultraavx 3d screening.

Saw it in Ultra AVX last night and it was phenominal. The 3D was crystal clear and the sound was amazing. My sisters who hate 3D movies and always insist on going 2D actually enjoyed it and said it was the best implementation of 3D they have seen (They haven't been to an IMAX).

My girlfriend is down for the cause!! YES!!! We're doing matinee tomm!! IMAX 3D WHOOP.

Okay GAF, Since nobody asked yet!...

Why does the Japanese Jaeger have the smallest Kaiju Kill Count?? Come on now, They're the originators of this shit, Give them some respect.

Arguably they have the best looking Jaeger too.

I saw MoS on ultraavx and thought the 3d was pretty good ... The buildings falling down "into you" effect was awesome.

I hope this feels the same.

Eh, you probably will cringe, especially early on, unless it ends up clicking for you.

I'm still not sure it was 100% intentional, but any time I think of it, I am reminded of hyper-dramatized 90s action anime.

Its like what EatChildren said: the movie works because it doesn't make any promises that it can't keep.

Good news, some other people have now also booked some tickets for tonights showing. Hopefully It'll be rammed by the time the film starts tonight but I reckon a lot will go and see Monsters University.

This is pretty much the only movie i've seen where IMAX is a huge fucking deal. The screen, the speakers. If there is 1 movie to see in IMAX, it's this.

On a side note, people been pming me about posters, is there an efficient online option for this? Like to buy tubes or something designed specifically for poster transportation? Don't wanna ship broken posters to folks, but I don't think I have it in me to diy wrap up like a dozen or 2 posters lol.

Given Guillermo's other movies its obvious he went more campy for this one on purpose, and it works. I came for giant robots fighting giant monsters, I didn't need a deep drawn out (and usually useless) subplot. Ironman 3 could have taken some notes on that.

Bonus points on not showing the
underlying love story in some cliche way
my girlfriend said she really liked that. Again, didn't feel the need to beat character background and plot points over our heads.

Watched the movie in Malaysia, LOVED it but I was annoyed with Rinko Kikuchi's acting.

And then I read this thread and apparently she speaks in Japanese for some of the dialogue? It was all in English here and it sounded bad.

I enjoyed this movie. The 3D was pretty good and the IMAX sound helped the experience. I like how they didn't waste much time on a back story. Straight into the action.

English isn't her first language, don't know what you expected.

I watched this last night at a private screening. Film's sense of scale is impressive and the combat scenes are so fucking entertaining and awesome.

The dialogue is dog shit though but you're more likely to get a laugh out of it than take offence.

It's a film I'm definitely getting on Blu-Ray.

She does speak a bit of Japanese. Was it ALL English? That would've been strange.

I'll go see it again at the IMAX. I saw it last night on a normal screen since I thought it wouldn't really matter.

Then I got to the Hong Kong fight, and I said to myself, "I've made a huge mistake."

At bfi iMax london, completely full crowd with young and old people talking about pilots from different countries. Also a huge stack of posters to get.

Alright...so finally awake enough to speak on the movie now that it's done. Got 2 posters out of the deal as well...but I don't think they are nearly as big as some people in this thread think they are. Maybe 30 x 18 on the thick stock poster vs. 20 x 12 on the glossy paper one for me.

TLDR version: I thought it was fun, I thought it was epic, I thought it was visually amazing, I thought it was great...but I see how this isn't going to do gangbusters with the general public.

That fucking initial "suit-up" scene in the beginning with the score blaring and the Jaegar getting primed for battle had me so god damn juiced up!!! FUCKKKK. Such an insane intro which left me with the shit-eating grin I was hoping for.

After the groundwork for the backstory is set and it moves to current time, things basically went into "oh shit, people are not going to like this movie" mode. A lot of time spent getting into the details of drifting, character development...a lot of face time with fairly one-dimensional characters setting up the eventual climax. I personally loved this part, but it was where my wife fell asleep and basically forces the watcher to buy-in to everything that's unfolding. Visually, this part is still great, and there are cuts of humor that are great...but if you don't go into the movie expecting a bit of over-the-top characters and some cheese, you're going to WTF this thing into the garbage bin and you'll be tainted for the final act.

The fact act itself, I had a bit of an issue with being able to keep track of who was doing what in the underwater fight scene. The two Jaegars weren't visually distinct enough and the darkness of the environment wasn't helping. Also the Kaiju they were fighting weren't visually distinct enough during the action cuts to really know who was doing what on top of it. The fight itself was cool, but I admittedly got lost more than once which sucked.

The scientists I love, loved. "Come quickly! Newt made a neural bridge out of some garbage and drifted with one of them...". Fucking lost it. When the other dude came out of the drift with the baby Kaiju and somehow managed to vomit into a toilet in the middle of the street I lost it again. Also watching him awkwardly trying to lock hands with Newt but having no idea how these bro-shakes work was hilarious. "I can't tell you, it's classified. I want to tell you...it's pretty cool... OK I'm going to tell you!"

Wish they made the first Sword moment more epic, if I can even say that with a straight face. It happened and it was awesome, but I wanted the actual slashing off of the head to have some kind "loud white noise while the sword gets formed to pure silence and pausing to draw you into the moment" stuff going on before the swipe was made. Swording the water Kaiju in half was awesome.

...so yeah! I loved it a lot. I see it's flaws...I don't give a shit about them...I want to see it again... I know not everyone is going to like this and I truly do worry about it's Box Office.

Burn Gorman is the man.

Enjoyed watching him ever since I saw Layer Cake, he's a fantastic actor.

Some hints of box office performance from notfabio of hsx at the megaplex which gauges performance last night

Pacific Rim - 520
Grown ups 2 - 133

In comparison

Wwz - 700
Prometheus - 800

Seeing it tomorrow...but the REAL question is

To 2D or to 3D iMAX...

I generally dislike 3D ( the glasses ruin the quality of the films, makes the colours look darker).

I hate 3D usually, but I actually kind of enjoyed it in this movie

Dammit, I was going to wait until my vacation is over, but does anyone know if there's a good IMAX theater in Honolulu? I'll watch it now then again with my brother when I get home. Just afraid there won't be any IMAX options in a few weeks and apparently it's the definitive way to see this film.

I guess 3D just isn't for me. I saw it in IMAX 3D and had trouble telling what was going on in some parts of the battles; it felt like I would have appreciated them more in 2D.
