Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

The only comparison you can make to Bay is that his transformers are now stains smeared under Gipsy's boot

Thinking of ordering it. Is it worth it?

It was surprisingly competent for a movie tie-in.

Art is inconsistent--I think there were six artists for the book--but it isn't terrible.

It adds a bit of backstory for K-Day, the original pilot program, the program getting shelved, etc.

I enjoyed it, and I haven't seen the movie yet. They took the time to create a foundation for the universe that exists in the movie.

In slightly more words: There is absolutely nothing in this film, except perhaps Ron Perlman's slight presence, that would lead you to suspect that it's directed by Del Toro. Instead, it has all the hallmarks of a film from Michael Bay, or even dare I say it, McG. A cast of two-dimensional non-entities, spouting absolutely nothing of interest, peppered with competent (occasionally interesting) action. It's incredibly dull. I'd even say that the first Transformers is the better film.

Eh? You get a good look at the Kaiju? The
premie Kaiju fetus strangling itself to death on its own umbilical cord
? The Shatterdome? Hannibal Chow's lair? Just about any set design? The
portal between worlds being one giant birth canal
?

Did we see the same movie?

My Pacific Rim loving brothers and sisters. Don't forget to share some love for Sharknado.

We have a thread for it, but its best I just post this gif.

I'll focus on your Bay comparison since I believe we both know a McG comparison is ridiculous.

It really isn't, this film is totally on par with Terminator 4 for me. I actually dare say I enjoyed T4 more, although that's perhaps because I went in with rock bottom expectations.

The problems I had with the first two Transformers films (didn't see the third one, so if they fixed it up please excuse me) is that aside from Optimus Prime and Bumblebee I could not remember which Transformer was which. The action was incoherent, the humor was filled with just plain innuendo, and it felt like it dragged on far too long. Whereas in Pacific Rim, even if I couldn't recall the names of the Jaegers or even the Kaiju, they were all distinctive in my mind. I could also cheer for the Jaegers because of just how much more the movie made me care about them more than the Transformers, and also because they didn't have as much shit flying on the screen I could tell what was actually happening.

Transformers 2 & 3 are utter dogshit, so they're irrelevant.

The Jaegers were visually distinctive, but only as long as they weren't moving. The action scenes were enjoyable, but I certainly didn't find them easy to follow, especially the final one. Couldn't see shit. And as for their actual distinctions, they amounted to absolutely nothing of value. The russian one has a big head, big whoop, the one with three pilots has three arms (of which we see nothing of consequence - did we even see the pilots in action? I don't remember), the aussie one... I don't remember at all. At least the robots in transformers had 'personalities' (I am using that term very loosely) to help separate them, an in comparison to the pilots of the Jagers, they're charismatic as fuck. Again, doesn't say much.

And finally, the humor in Pacific Rim was rather abundant, but was nowhere near as dirty. This definitely felt like a film I could've and should've brought my little 9 year old nephews too because most of the jokes were just good clean fun. For some reason I just enjoyed that more.

Except for one of the scenes with Ron Perlman, I'm struggling to remember any of the apparent humour of Pacific Rim - so that's how funny I found it.

You're right that this film is more suitable for younger people though as Transformers is lecherous to uncomfortable degrees.

The thing is for me, what makes this movie different is because it IS a movie. We've already had animes and mangas and whatnot about giant robots versus aliens, and while they would probably make a solid anime it's not why I was excited about Pacific Rim. If they do anything with the franchise, it's got to be another film.

So basically you seem to be saying you like it because someone put big robots and big monsters on a cinema screen. Sadly, beyond a brief the distraction, that's not enough for me.

McG.

Now that is a name I haven't heard in a very long time.

Good thing too. T4 seems to have well and truly killed of his career. Even makes it slightly worth it, doesn't it?

Movie Review:
When I went in to watch the movie I was pretty hyped. All the good reviews/word of mouth had me really excited.

I really liked the score. It was tense/epic at the same time. I have the music stuck in my head right now!

The plot was pretty generic and predictable. I guess dialogue had something to do with that as well. I would recommend people not going into this movie thinking it is serious a movie. There is clearly some dialogue in there that is supposed to make you laugh but it is kind of hard to do so when in the background there is a pretty serious life/death fight going on. I don't know...some people may like that but I surely didn't. Some of those lines were so cheesy that I had to hold myself from laughing (not because it was funny but because how dumb it was in that tense situation). I'm a pretty big anime fan and I did see some resemblance to Evangelion. But again the plot/dialogue is pretty generic and was probably the weakest part of the movie.

The visuals, on the other hand, were superb. This movie is one of those few movies that actually made it seem like it was worth the 200 million dollar budget (the actual budget was I believe 180 million). The jaegers were simply awesome along with the Kaiju. This movie had some of the best fight scenes ever in my opinion.

Overall the movie is simple, mindless fun. I went with a friend who is not an anime fan nor does he really like simple action movies. He said the movie was okay though.

Overall I give it a 7/10

Oh and BTW the theatre I went to wasn't exactly full. I was able to buy tickets 20 minutes before the movie started and was able to find good seats. Hopefully positive word of mouth really carries this movie.

Hmm...me and my friends seen the movie in 3D and can see everything without a problem. We even talk about the small details we notice during the fights afterwards.

The distinctions for the jaegers are there, like the sound during Cherno Alpha startup because of the different power system it uses, the hand movements etc. You make it seems like the robots need to talk for you to notice the differences.

I've just come from straight from the cinema and was (unusually) compelled to share my thoughts.

First I should preface that I don't watch film trailers, so all I knew about this going in was: Del Toro, giant robots & (maybe) giant monsters.

In two words: Oh dear.

In slightly more words: There is absolutely nothing in this film, except perhaps Ron Perlman's slight presence, that would lead you to suspect that it's directed by Del Toro. Such a disappointment.

Still, it was alright to watch some giant robots smashing around some giant monsters for a couple of hours, as we don't really get much of that in the cinema. Just don't expect anything more.

Hehe, would you say it has a worse story than Sucker Punch?

No, it's just that the differences there were, as I said, were inconsequential to the plot. If you're going to give one of them three fucking arms, make it worth something!

It terms of the plot, Gypsy Danger and Striker Eureka were the focus so whether it had three fucking arms or not doesn't matter much when you're there to be canon fodder for Category 4 Kaiju.

If the complaint is that those particular mechs and their pilots were underdeveloped, I think you'll find that's been echoed here and elsewhere several times considering Cherno and Crimson were two of the more unique looking mechs.

That having been said, I didn't have any issue distinguishing between Eureka and Gypsy Danger in my viewing. I saw it in good old traditional 2D though and had no issues whatsoever following the action. If anything, it was refreshing to see action sequences that were choreographed and framed well with a distinct lack of shaky cam and the other shit that's become associated with action movies today.

Like I said, I knew essentially nothing about it going in bar Del Toro's involvement, so I absolutely expected something more. By the standards of his last 10 years of film making, it's an absolute stinker.

I hate when people review movies like this. It gives you no sense of whether the movie was actually good. The worst movie by director A could be better than all the movies currently in theaters but you wouldn't know if the movie was good or not because the reviewer is comparing it only to movies from that specific director and not to movies as a whole.

There is a scene in yahoo trailers about the sequence
when Gipsy DAnger falls all messed up by teh beach and the old dude and the kid saw it.

The scale of that is off the fucking charts man, seriously.

:O

So read the rest of what I said instead of picking out that one line and you'll get the rest of my reasoning.

Fucking depressing, Anyway Jordan's Furniture Imax it is, always a good time and I'll get a big ass Fuddruckers Buger before hand :)

Quite stoked.

Did this reviewer even watch the film???

http://eclipsemagazine.com/movie-reviews/39554/

"There’s a gigantic repetitive battle almost every ten minutes."
"why didn’t they use the Sword earlier in the movie and it is never seen again"

And when the hell is home 3D better than cinemas 3D???
"I’m sure this movie will look much better on 3D Blu-ray than in the theaters, but man was it dark."

Typhoon briefly became a whirling dervish of death with its "whirlwind formation"
before it was curbstomped
. An argument could be made that there wasn't enough of Crimson Typhoon in the movie, but I feel its uniqueness was displayed about as well as it could have been given its screen time.

Btw, has it been mentioned yet how obviously toned down the GlaDOS voice for the interface system is in the actual film? I was kinda saddened, because while it was kinda on the nose in the trailers, at least there was a ton of personality in the voice. The version they used in the end sounded so... subdued. :(

I caught the IMAX3D showing last night and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. The story was pretty generic and the acting was occasionally a little weak, but Pacific Rim was still one hell of a ride. Without a doubt it was the most fun I've had in the theater in a long time. People in the audience were actually cheering Gipsy Danger on which somehow didn't annoy me like it usually would. I'd actually consider catching it again this weekend just to see some of those fight scenes again.

Worst is when you're watching the 2D version, but the theater is alternating between 3D and 2D showings, and they forget to remove the god damn lense.

I really fucking hate 3D. It's ruining my Imax :(

Should have been ADA if you ask me.

My experiences with home 3d have been way better than the few times I saw movies in 3d theaters. Some projectionists just don't give a fuck.

Just got back from the midnight showing of Pacific Rim. Got an awesome poster. Oh yeah, the movie was amazing too. The use of vibrant colors throughout the film was crazy-stunning; I don't think I've seen special effects like that anywhere else. Everything just felt whimsical and energetic. It was like a live action anime. You guys gotta see this in IMAX 3D. Wow.

Yep, I was disappointed a bit there though I did love the
"Would you like to try again?" line after Mako has her flip out and the initial neural bonding test fails.
.

Pretty sure you can blame fan backlash for that. After that first trailer people wouldn't shut up about it.

I watched one of those first trailers the other night (haven't seen the movie) and forgot that she was in the film.

I figured they would tone it down for the actual release. It just seemed like something that was too cool to stay in there.

I was gonna go see this this evening but other things changed my plans. I guess I don't care that much if the plot is predictable, I just wanna see giant robots smashing shit up and kicking ass and taking names.
