What a convoluted mess of a movie. It is to bad that the poor drama scenes got in the way of all the awesomeness that was the actual battles. Surprisingly the biggest disappointment for me wasn't the cheesy, cliche script (which was so cheesy that it was almost charming at times), but instead it was the the poor acting from the majority of the lead characters. Mako, the scientists, the lead role, Val Kilmer from Top Gun wannabe, and oh my god Mako.... So bad. Thank god for Ron Perlman and (to a lesser extent) Idris Elba.

Basically Pacific Rim is Day of Tomorrow but with giant monsters and mechs replacing the storms. Actually, that's not completely fair... It's more like Pacific Rim is somewhere between Day of Tomorrow and Independence Day. It lacks the charming characters and coherent plot to match Independence Day, yet the spectacle is just as amazing today (and in some ways even better) as Independence Day was the day it came out. The 3D is well worth the price of admission though. The best I have seen since Avatar.

Just go into Pacific Rim expecting 45 minutes to a hour of awesome mech battles, and another hour of mostly boring drama, a poor script, and cringe-worthy acting.

Just walked out after an hour. I've never walked out of a movie before.

Stupidest fucking thing ever. Maybe I was too tired to just shut my brain off and enjoy the monsters and killing, but the acting and story were just too embarrassing to watch.

Going to be interesting to see after the weekend how PR did at the box office.

Oh hell, Grown Ups 2 has 7% on Rottentomatoes. Wow....

That would be some serious suckage if GU2 beats PR financially.

Current RT Ratings

Grown Ups 2: 7%
Pacific Rim: 72%

lololololol

And Grown Ups 2 has a chance to out gross PR, fuck.

edit:

Just got back. That was a two hour nerd orgasm...I loved it!

This is the monster movie that we've been looking for since Godzilla '55.

I've heard the worst thing about the movie is the rather uninteresting characters. Honestly, not too surprised at this. If that's the case, kind of a bummer being Del Toro usually has good characters especially something like the Hellboy movies.

^^^ It's the fact that you have to sit through excruciatingly stupid sequences with the actors trying to play along with some terrible script just to get to the cool looking monster and robot fights. After 30 minutes of simply dreaded "character development" I just couldn't stand it anymore.

Wow...and you missed the best part of the movie.

It's not even a matter of being serious, it's about not being able to stand how fucking horrible the acting in this movie was. I'm sure I missed the best part but I was tired as shit and couldn't stand it anymore. My friends agreed with me and we are all gamers/nerds/what have you.

I totally understand where you're coming from. I think everyone can respect that. I guess I'm wondering why go to the movies if you're tired? Or am I reading it wrong and you're saying you were "tired of seeing the movie"?

Or a different fucking opinion, no way!

I'm allowed to have those.

I'm sure I'll end up watching Pacific Rim in some capacity in the future where I can just skip through the shit and watch the beautiful CGI fights but I wasn't in the mood for it today.

It was a bit of both. 9:20 showing after a long ass work week, and thought I wanted to wind down with some friends and watch robots kill shit. What I got was 10 minutes of awesome action and then a whole bunch of horrible following that with no sight of the end or an interesting action sequence.

And apparently it something everyone can respect.

And right before shit got real. I felt it was dragging quite a bit through the middle as well, then the Hong Kong battle happened. And my god, did I feel bad about thinking the movie was dragging when that sequence kicked in.

Sorry you did not enjoy it though. Perhaps try again another day when you are more rested. See it through to the end. Even if you hate everything in the last hour, at least you can judge the entire movie.

Don't talk shit about Van Helsing.

Opening sequence in B&W was awesome. The score was badass. The rest of the movie was just horrible. Not even Jackman could save it. And it is a shame, since the premise is great and the opening sequence was so great too.

I can't remember exactly what the last thing to happen was, but the scene where
the little girl walks up and sees the military suit guy emerging from the rubble like fucking Jesus
pushed me over the edge.

There's 20-30 minutes of action afterwards if you bother to sit. That's what ppl cheering on.

You were a few minutes away from the biggest action sequence of the movie. Sorry you didn't enjoy it up to that point. Like I said, I thought it was dragging too up until that point, but once the Kaiju alarm went off the movie ramped up to 11.

Again, I hope you see this again when rested and in a theater. This movie demands a huge screen and loud sound.

Really, really good movie. I didn't blow my load watching it but was enjoyable to say the least. A couple nitpicks I do have is the close up shots of the actors faces in almost every scene which was a bit annoying and the second nitpick was the cookie cutter plot. Was serviceable not memorable. I love the theme music and will listen to the OST over in the weekend. Though in all, really well shot, action galore when it happens, and it hit my nerdy g-spot while watching it, hahaha. Really do hope it does well for a sequel.

And on another note, though, the movie try to be realistic as it can be, I was kind of gunning the movie to be serious but I guess the new Godzilla movie coming out will achieve the serious tone of these kaiju movies.

I don't think this will turn into a Nolan thread or a Man of Steel thread, if you didn't like I understand. It's kind of ironic for me and maybe you'll find it interesting. But the other day my friend who was hyping up TLOU for like 6 months to me bought it at the same time as me. 2 weeks later I talk to him about how amazing it was and he says "Dude after the first 2 hours I stopped playing and traded it in. The game is so clunky and the movement sare slow motion! I hated it". I didn't know whether to be pissed at him or just shrug it off :) TLOU was great to me. Pacific Rim isn't a masterpiece by any means, but you do have to go into it with a mind set that it's a nerdy popcorn flick where the humans are there as a sideshow for the robots. However I still see your point that the acting was underwhelming in a sense.

Just watched the first thirty minutes of Hellboy, and it shits all over Pacific Rim. It's hard to look pass all the crap surrounding the amazing battle scenes when Del Toro has done both action and dramatic scenes so well before.

Yeah I totally understand that its a horrible piece of film outside of certain elements...but I love the hell out of it. (Except for Dracula's Brides. Worst characters ever to be put on film)

This is the type of movie that you need to be in the right mood in order to enjoy it. Funny how I hyped this movie up among my friends and my friends were meh to the idea; only to have them come out saying "10/10" while I was the one saying "meh."

I'm gonna have to watch it again later on with the right mood to do it justice. Still, looking back to it now most of the scenes didn't get me emotionally involved with the exception of
Mako's memory.

Haha, that's interesting. Maybe it's because I have been playing the masterpiece that is The Last of Us for a few weeks now and am still riding the high of the incredible voice acting/story/script, but I just couldn't stand what I was watching. It was painful, especially because it crossed that border into being so stupid that it wasn't even funny.

I'll most likely end up seeing it again with a bit more rest and a better mindset, and will hopefully enjoy at least the ending action sequences everybody seems to be hyping up.

I can understand that. There are many films that I know deep down and accept that they are horrible and cheesy as hell (Last Starfighter, Highlander), but I still love the hell out of them and never tire of watching them.

Yeah, the acting wasn't the greatest. WHO THE FUCK CARES.

It was the best mindless action film i've ever seen.

I think people mistake "some people don't like a film, some people do" as some sort of concerted backlash and counter-backlash and counter-counter-backlash.

I'm seeing some Twitter friends saying pretty much the same things Rokker and Skiesofwonder are.

I wonder what they were expecting about a movie with robots vs monsters?

The Lone Ranger looked and was bad.

Pacific Rim looked bad (thanks marketing), but is good.

I think people mistake "some people don't like a film, some people do" as some sort of concerted backlash and counter-backlash and counter-counter-backlash.

Just wait, it happens everytime. ;)

The complaints I don't get are the "well I'm a nerd/manga/anime fan and I didn't like it so therefore it sucks and was overhyped"

This is a fucking Kaiju film, not a "nerd" movie. This is a big budget Godzilla film cranked to 11. Just because you have some nerdy taste doesn't mean this was for you. Pretty much all films in this genre have had terrible plots and poor acting. This is a love letter to those films. Relatively speaking, Pacific Rim is amazing and excels in those regards. Again, relatively speaking. That doesn't mean it was done on purpose, it just means that wasn't the focus or point. Some of you went to McDonalds expecting to buy tacos.

Convinced some co-workers to see it on Tuesday after paintball. Gonna see it in IMAX.

Haha, that's interesting. This is one of the most pretentious things I have ever read.

It'd be nice if the trailers actually used the film's theme. Man of Steel was a shit movie, but this trailer is amazing, and it's all thanks to having a fun musical score instead of endless "BWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGGGG".

Thx Inception.
