My only complaint was that I felt like the movie couldn't cover all the ground that it wanted to. It felt too short in certain aspects. Also the Hong Kong fight was amazing, easily the highest point of the movie.

Saw it. Loved it. I haven't come out of a movie buzzing like that in years. I wanted more of everything. It would have been really nice to more of the other jaegers and pilots since I loved their designs. My theater exploded when that one kaiju sprouted wings and dragged them into the sky. I was also surprised by how much I enjoyed the 3D as well. Really gave things a sense of scale.

So yeah, this was a pretty good movie. Fuck yeah.

CONS-
Alpha and Typhoon :/
-Huge letdowns. I though I was about to get some 2 on 2 gangster shit.

-No add-on's.
This movie would have been way more bad ass if the Jaeger's had weapons that weren't built in, like Gundam's and Evangelion's. Imagine Gipsy with a revolver or Striker with a machine gun.

Im super happy with what I got out of this film though. Took me back to my childhood for some strange reason. I was smiling like a kid.

Agreed.

Just saw the movie. Everything up to the Hong kong battle was actually terrible, but after that, the movie managed to redeem itself.

Also, Rinko Kikuchi is so hot. Sooo hot. All I can say is: thank god for Babel.

He had experience in not getting distracted by "stray rabbits aka memories", not the ability to enter them and go all Inception on us.

They explained several times that drifting was sharing memories between two people. How exactly did he go "Inception" on anything? He witnessed Mako's most important and private memory, he didn't change or alter anything at all.

just saw it.. I don't think guillermo gets robot animes and what actually makes them work/good.. just taking shallow ideas from evangelion and ultraman doesn't work

you know, if they are gonna sequel this, they are totally gonna have to toy it up. A ton of different jaegers that don't die instantly combined with a huge toy push partnership with like hasbro or something.
You mean Bandai, yo.

Excellent movie. I only had a problem with Gipsy Danger being an 'Analog' mech. How do its internal computers work then?

But I got over that real quick when GD pulls out a sword. Holy crap I was just blown away at that little piece of mech fan service.

I think what they meant is it didn't have a battery to get fried by the emp, if it was off at the time of the blast it wouldn't have been effected by it, and they could have just fired up the reactor to get it going again, probably.

Yeah, it was an amazing demonstration of how a giant robot movie can be done and also a decent example of why they shouldn't. It kind of showcases the shortcomings of film as a medium more than Del Toro as a director. He did all he could but in the end he still couldn't fit everything he wanted, and you could tell.

What does piloting a mech solo have anything to do with drifting to control a mech? They specifically say they are completely different experiences and I don't see how Raleigh's experience with that would help him in drifting with a complete stranger to control a mech. It doesn't matter that Relaigh left, he saw his brother die right in front of his eyes while drifting with him and he still had traumatic experiences tied to that (shown by the scene where they test Gipsy out). The guy was a huge flight risk yet he was picked because he was his only opition (only mech 3 driver) and the world was going to end anyways. Yet Mako, who was obviously the best second candidate, couldn't become the second pilot? It just seemed like another unnecessary plot point to add unnecessary drama to the plot.

1. Except it does matter that Raleigh left because you stated that he would have a possible problem with revenge. Him leaving voluntarily shows he didn't want revenge at all. And piloting solo has nothing to do with drifting, but it does have something to do with strength and experience. Remember that ordinary people couldn't handle piloting a Jaeger alone, and Pentecost knew that Raleigh was special. In that same scene where he has the traumatic flashback, he immediately pops out of it and overcomes it. It's never a problem anymore in the film. Whereas Raleigh knows how to handle the drift, Mako never has. In addition to this, Mako had an even more traumatic experience with the Kaiju, and she was like a daughter to him so of course Pentecost didn't let her.

It's a Nuke. The most powerful weapon at mankind's disposal. If it didn't break the barrier then why could a Mech? It is really never explained why Ilba's character thinks a Mech with a nuke strapped to is back could logically enter the Rift.

2. Did you not read my post? It's like going under your sink to fix the drain. They didn't bring the mech down there because it was more powerful, but because they could better route it through the portal.

Ok I know mention this being faintly mentioned during the movie.

3. Charlie Day literally screams at the audience that they're clones and have a hivemind.

He had experience in not getting distracted by "stray rabbits aka memories", not the ability to enter them and go all Inception on us.

4. That memory scene was just him observing the memory from afar. He never interacted with the memory at all. Unless you saw a different Inception than I did.

I'm talking about the plan that the government had in plan to replace the Jagers. Was only mention once and then forgotten.

5. I don't recall but I believe they wanted to continue building a wall. The specifics didn't really matter, it just needed to be conveyed to the audience that it was a stupid plan.

No, I just decided to actually try and process what was happening and not just wait for explosions to happen.

6. Are you trying to imply that I didn't?

And the mech can be torn apart by one bite of the Kaiju (killing the pilot inside), but yet a drop from over a 10000 feet high doesn't do a bit of damage because somehow a last second thruster propels it enough to stop gravity? The mech barely even slows down. That's what I meant.

7. Maybe the Kaiju are just a lot stronger than whatever damage the mech got dealt when it fell down.

I feel like if they had found a way to cut the end and have hong kong be the final fight they could have fit more character stuff. A giant robot movie can work, this proved it, the story was just too ambitious. It needed to be scaled back a bit. It'd have worked better as a 2-parter.

I need mechanized Kaiju, like fucking yesterday.

Please don't bomb Pacific Rim :(

I also would have loved to see a Jaeger Kaiju mimic, go Kiryu on these motherfuckers.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Really liked the mech and monster designs. Personally it was a nice summer blockbuster about giant robots and monsters.

One question though....Why are manned boats still a technology in use? In a universe where monsters pop up from the sea and the technology to build 50 story combat robots, why do people still need to be aboard boats?

Why are you overthinking a robot movie?

Because just like in the real world, not everyone can afford the latest and greatest.

Fucking loved it. Movie knew what it was, and was completely unapologetic about it. Dialogue was really fucking cheesy, but I was totally behind it.

I thought the human stuff was going to be completely terrible, but it was stupid in its own fun way as opposed to something like Transformers where you want to stab your own ears for how insulting and shitty everything you're hearing is.

Was exactly what I wanted, too much fun Ron Perlman steals the show

But I feel like this was at somepoint inteneded to be or harvested from that early/mid 2000's Evangelion film WETA was working on

Just saw this today, totally fantastic movie. I do wish it had explored the whole synchronization thing more though. Tons of amazing action though.

Also the scientists were pretty hilarious, a great way to relieve some of the tension present in a fun way.

This scene was kind of heartbreaking to watch, the actress who played young Mako really did an amazing job. Hearing her cry just got to me a little for some reason. When Mako was having that flashback it really felt like the movie was coming together with that character insight.

If you by "faintly mentioned" you mean repeated multiple times by multiple characters and being the entire basis of Charlie Day's characters subplot, then sure. "Faintly mentioned."

No, I just decided to actually try and process what was happening and not just wait for explosions to happen. Halfway through I gave up and then decided to tune out until the battles begin again.
So basically you tuned out the parts where they explained the stuff you had a problem with? Okay then. At least that matches up with the "faintly mentioned" stuff above.

I agree, I didn't like the underwater scene that much, although it just had to happen. But the fight in Hong Kong was the real climax of the movie for me.

One of the things I really enjoyed about the movie is how "in focus" everything looked. Very crisp picture.

As for the movie itself, I actually ended up being more impressed by the Kaiju than I was the Jaegers, which is surprising because I saw the movie FOR the Jaegers. I wasn't disappointed with the mech designs. They were pretty cool and all I could hope for. But those Kaiju looked awesome and were wonderfully animated.

Just came back from a 3D showing. WHY THE FUCK HAVE WE NOT HAD A LIVE ACTION EVANGELION MOVIE YET!? ARGGHHHH!

Simple, Gainax became greedy and stubborn.

Link: http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-ne...d-over-live-action-evangelion-movie-agreement

Either now, or by the time Pacific Rim opens in Japan next month, Gainax will be kicking themselves for all the lost opportunities since the live-action Evangelion rights now appear in legal hell.

Well done Gainax, you screwed up big time.

I think it is a shame that limitations in the budget showed in how they structured the movie and choreographed the fights. i loved the fact that the movie was based around Hong Kong and has its climax there, but it would have been nice if some of it could have been shot in the actual city.

Instead, you can tell none of the cast have been there and it made the city look like a seedy Chinatown, probably in a set in Vancouver. There are hardly any interactions with the city they were protecting, not even with the triplets. I mean, how would a city feel to lose its heroes who have defended them (did they say 47 times?). Instead there are some familiar stereotypes...

Spoiler thread? Spoiler thread!!!!!

Okay, so did anyone think it was like... a MASSIVE WASTE that the only fight in the entire movie with the most colorful mechs ended up being yet-another-night-fight-in-the-water like 3-4 other of the fights in the movie? I really wish they set that fight in the early evening, and then progress towards the night for the Gipsy Danger fight in the city itself (which was really cool).

yeah, I wanted a full daytime fight

Hopefully, well get a sequel. What's the chances of this happening?

Forget sequel. Give me a prequel set at the dawn of the Kaiju War. Show the beginnings of the Jaeger program, the fall of cities, the defeat of the first Kaiju, the rise of Kaiju culture - the museums, the blackmarket, the toys, the groupies. Show the Jaeger pilots becoming rockstars. Basically, give me a 2 hour version of the first 15 minutes of the movie, and I'll be happy! :D

Make Ron Perlman the lead character building his empire.

Wasn't that through nukes? So it'd just be a lot of jaeger-less explosions...

Pretty much this.

Doesn't have to have Jaegers all the time. They'll come in at the end for big fights to show that humanity is turning the tide. The first Kaiju to be defeated by a Jaeger should also be a major moment.

I didn't think they used nukes, just conventional weapons, but that was probably just a cat 1 and it took six days and lost three cities. I also wish they weren't cutting jaeger programme short because of a wall, but got complacent and national politics came into play.

A prequel seems more appropriate but we know what happens there. I want to see another movie, but I'm not convinced of the direction they need to go.

Comic shows nukes being used. Seemed successful. I wonder why they didn't nuke ever Kaiju once they came out of the rift in the actual film.

Saw it last night at 20:00 first night, cinema was maybe 40% full and it was only a small screen. However Monsters University also opened last night.

Loved it from start to finish. The intro explaining what's gone on and where we are now was great. The doctors high speed comedic relief was great, especially as they are about to drift with the baby Kaiju and can't brofist properly. Perlman was great, and I loved the idea that not only communities had sprung up around the bodies, but that there was a black market for all the parts.

Cherno and Typhoon should have gotten more screen time, there should have been more daylight fighting.

Why they cast a Brit and an American as Austrailans with terrbad accents baffled me. The Brit plays the nasty dickhead role well in other stuff, but the accent.. damn. Didn't mind some of the other cheese, though it could be been toned down or replaced as nothing but a positive.

Obviously unless the aliens come back there is no sequel, so if there were to be another film it has to be prequel, but we know that the monsters are less fierce (cat 1-3) and that there are loads and loads of Jaegers.

My comic was posted yesterday, and I'll definitely buy this when it's out and will likely be seeing it again at the cinema.

I noticed that too. Don't know what it was.

The thing that I found a bit odd was how they needed kaiju DNA to get through the portal into the alien dimension, but the escape pods seemed to make it back out just fine.

Unless kaiju DNA was only required to get through from the Earth side.

If I was making a transdimensional portal to another universe, I'd make sure the buggers couldn't just walk right on through and punch me in the face. I wouldn't need a lock going back the other way though.
